  • A lot of people, myself included, love that vintage Marshall sound. In this video I will compare three ways to get there with a Marshall SV20H, Dr. Z Remedy (both heads) and a Friedman Dirty Shirley pedal. Let's see how they compare and which amp fills your expectation of a good Marshall sound.
All of the products where bought by myself, and all of my opinions are therefore my own. If you want to check out this gear yourself, this is where I got everything:

Thanks for this example! Dr Z Remedy is 40w/20w with 6V6. In this application (Free-Alright now) the Z sounds much more Marshall (in the song) than the Marshall! For my ears anyway. Of course, there's much to be said for being in the room. Thanks again friend.

Great demo! I’ve watched a few of your videos now, I think you do a great job and can jam! Thanks for sharing man. Keep it up.

But even more important than any of that stuff is the fact that I love your John Carpenter shirt! (plus, you can't beat that true Marshall midrange growl...)

John Carpenter is awesome! More shirts and sweaters are hidden in my other videos 😅

Good video. I had a non master volume Remedy, and I actually just ordered a Maz 18. With my current band I think the Maz 18 will work the best, because of both its clean tones, and its ability to take pedals better that the other two.

The Maz sure is great with pedals and clean tones! So if that's what you're looking for: good call 🙂

@@StevenAnthonyGuitar Yes, I am using a Paisley Drive Deluxe as my main overdrive. I have a few 65 Amps that I love, but they then to be very specific amps style wise, and seem to prefer certain guitar more than others. The Maz, from what I see is a good all arounder, and since I have order a head, I can chose the most appropriate cabinet for the stage size.

Thanks Steven for that very thorough demo. Been thinking about a Man 18, but that little Marshall does sound great.

You mean the Maz 18? I also have one of those, I use it in some of my other videos and ofcourse with the Friedman DS pedal. Next to that, I actually shot a video about it last weekend. If you want that plexi sound, the little Marshall SV20H is great! For a wider range of tones, the Maz 18 is great.

@@StevenAnthonyGuitar I'll look for those videos. I did check for any used Remedy heads on Reverb, but none right now. And yes I did mean Maz 18.....spell checker got me there. Just to share a thought I've always had about Marshalls: most admire the crunch and distortion, but even after owning several vintage 60s Fenders, I think the Marshal clean tone is the best ever.....Wind Cries Mary.....One Rainy Day Wish.

@@bwhit716 I played Fender amps for years, including some vintage ones. When I switched to Marshalls a few years ago I found the sound I was always looking for though. Clean or crunch, it's awesome in my opinion.

The actaul Marshall head sounded best to me, but Dave's pedals are not to be discounted. They're amazing little "amps in a box." Love using my Smallbox pedal especially when playing loud is not an option.

I think they're all cool in their own way! But if I had to pick one, it would be the Marshall as well.

    The remedy uses 4 6V6’s at 40watts

I think all 3 sound great, Marshall my preference. The Remedy cuts the best, the Maz is more ZZtop tonally.

Thanks! I think all three of them are awesome as well, though I no longer own the Dirty Shirley pedal. Replaced it with something else I'll be showcasing soon.

    The Marshall sound, Marshall

I have Remedy, but there is nothing of Marshall…Marshall sound is EL 34, not 6V6.

The sound of an amp is dictated by more than the power tubes, mainly the circuit. If you look at Dr. Z's website it states that it was based on a plexi.

@@StevenAnthonyGuitar Of course, but Marshall plexi is another thing, by me.
