I almost did in 1987. Ended up getting an Ensoniq ESQ’1, an REX50 fx unit and a TR-505 instead though. Seems like yesterday! Subsequently have owned three different DX7IIFD’s in the intervening years. Still got one but to be honest, I prefer the Mk1. Not sure why but I think the mk1 feels like it belongs to the analogue era ( heavy, case gets warm, hissy). The MkII DX sits firmly in the digital era. Not a bad thing, but the Mk1 is more nostalgic.
@@ozzy3933 Nice! The ones I've seen used are all a bit battered. Take good care of it, if you keep it in good shape it will surely hold its value over the years.
The DX7 is magical. Unbeknownst to many it can produce its own chorus, reverb, flanger, wah and digital delay, and it can sound very warm, and it can mimic almost any natural instrument organically
I purchased one of these while on my honeymoon back in the late ‘90’s and had it shipped from CA back to Boston. Definitely the best version of the DX7, I loved the sound possibilities, but unfortunately it developed an intermittent power issue due to a cracked circuit board so I eventually let it go. Probably would never buy another, but it was quite fun and inspirational while it lasted.
you should try one of those software emulators, there are some good free ones and some even load the original banks/presets but maybe those you have to pay for
Wonderful and classic sound, i own both mk1 and mk2 dx7s each one for specific sounds. It deserves every cent that worths today and of course even more sound wise.
It's been so long since I've heard Oxygene part 4....or any other parts for that matter, but it was part 2 that I was most familiar with back in the day.
If you don't know that this sequencer can play back many instruments back at the same time, they can't tell you. They don't know. It might as well be an Eminee Organ. Great keyboard player.
Ok it say's demo , but all those sounds only use the single voice mode . The DX 7 Mk ll is capable of split & layered sounds kind of fattens things up a bit . ( still have my Mk ll w/ Grey matter E ! )
One of the best looking synthesizers, too. Together with the D-50, VZ-1, and K5. Most things that came after those were disappointments in aesthetics department.
Yes, I love the look of the late 80s synths. I love the korg m1 design too but only for looks. The dx makes such good use of the preset buttons for menus so you don't have to menu dive much.
What I always wonder when I hear these patch demos is are these lucky accidents or did the programmers tweak until they heard their initial dream sound come to life.
Hi, i just found your video here and wanted to know if you might live in or around the nyc area? And if so, i would like to talk more with you about possibly playing synth on 3 albums of new dance/rock music with an 80s sound. Please let me know. Thank you.
Unfortunately I do not, but we can try to work remotely, check www.keyboardexpress.eu, you can also send to me the MIDI tracks and I'll send back to you the recording!
@@giulianovideo Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. I dont work that way though. Making music should be done with all the musicians present in the same room together. That is when the best music is made. from my experience. All the best ~

The thing about the FM synthesis, like the DX series is that it sounds a bitt dull until you add a little reverb, but then... THEN... magic happens!
Yes but everyone plays them dry. Never understood that.
@@jkanclark Because it can be a very percussive synth
I had a boss chorus on one side, a boss flanger set for chorus on the he other side, & a stereo reverb. A must for these dry FM machines.

The sound of the DX7 never gets old! I especially like the capabilities of this Mk.II model...
Is the DX7 or DX7 II better?
@@rizali7837 in a way you could say that MK2 was like playing two mk1's.
Stereo, dual voice layering, etc. and keyboard build - buttons ...

Hey! I got a question, what's the difference between the II - FD and the II - D? Do you know?
@@percaros Both are the same, except the FD model has a floppy disk slot ( FD = Floppy Disk) :)

MkI more gritty and with a pleasant little digital distorsion, MkII cleaner and powerful.

The Yamaha DX7IIFD patch “Electric Piano/Fulltines/Electric Piano 1” was heard in the Kidsongs song “Water World” (1986).
I love your Jarre tribute at the end of the video
The most crispy sounding synth ever 😁
Very good synthesizer. Other non-subtractive synthesizers to consider are Casio VZ-1 and Kawai K5.
I can only play my dx with reverb it’s brings it to life

Alternative name: Yamaha Nostalgia
Suggestion: Try it through a tube pre-amp (p:ex cheap Art tube). Then the DX looses that "clean" sound.
I absolutely love this sound reminds me of Knight Rider A-Team MacGyver background music

Gives me Super Mario 64 vibes

The Korg Wavestation looks awesome.

Oxygene pt.4 is in CRT49
quanto mi piacerebbe avere una DX7, il sogno di tutti i tastieristi / pianisti
Reminds me of the old Nintendo, Sierra, and other DOS games.
The old Sound Blaster cards used a similar synthesis engine. Though the DX7 is slightly better quality.
rm2kmidi Soundblasters’s synth engine is definitely less complex, not slightly.
Those sounds remember space quest or body blows
I wish the dx21 was touch sensitive. This sounds great.
