The only other photo opportunity we got this afternoon was at the U.A.E.'s monument (which translates to "Oasis of Dignity") to their fallen soldiers since their inception as a nation-state in 1971. This includes the Gulf and Afghan Wars, as well as intervening in several local civil wars, usually against the likes of ISIS and Al Qaida.
But their soldiers also serve in humanitarian efforts, such as in earthquake-stricken areas, according to our guide (Turkey comes to mind as a recent case). And some of these places can be just as dangerous as a war zone. So the black stone slab includes all the names of those who lost their lives in the line of duty, whatever that duty might be.
