I built my own touring bike in 2012 it was a Santos travel master with shimano xt and to this day it hasn't missed a beat and I really enjoyed building it, I really enjoyed watching your build well done it's a sweet bike

I had a travel master alu 26 inch also (for a short period of time). Never toured with it unfortunately but the food shopping errands never seemed so stable with the panniers full 😁 what a great bike. I wonder how this Nomad is to ride in comparison. The frame stiffness of the Santos was great and the guy I sold the bike to is enjoying it a lot. Small wheels are fun unloaded and stable when loaded. Not same momentum of big size wheels tho.
Nice job. Interesting that Thorn's standard build would have a disc brake at the rear and a V-brake up front. I'm sure the bike stops just fine as it is! Happy cycling.
Love them fenders,, plenty of clearance & looks like you have room left so yer toe missed the front fender on turns,, my touring bicycle (Windsor Tourist) don't give me much room & i don't have big feet 👍👍 good job 👍👍
The fork is a Surly Troll of 26". it is 420mm from axle to crown and with an offset of 43mm. Very relaxing video. I agree with you about the bike building process being a form of creativity and fun. I personally love doing this things also. The bike looks great, I also like the cyclingabout content and saw the article Alee wrote about the Nomad MK3. I used to have a Thorn, I think early 2000s, a Club Tour in light blue color. It was great as a light tourer, the paint very durable (based on my research it was powder coated with some clear coat on top). Now apparently they use a paint called imron.. I wonder if it's also good and scratch resistant. What's your experience about the paint in your bike? By the way I love it! I remember a review about this bike joking about the color because it reminds the postman color here in England 😁 I personally would build it with 27.5" wheels to carry more momentum while riding. I think you would save some energy in the long run. And 27.5" are available apparently even in remote places nowadays (not that I know it for sure or experience, just what people say in the internet). Are you planning to change your 26s to 27.5s? I had a Santos Travel Master 26er and love the combination of stability given by frame stiffness, long chainstays and small wheels, but at the same time I think that wide 27.5" wheels are just perfect as closer to 26er than 29er in diameter and feeling. Best of both worlds for me. Also I would have loved to see a proper kickstand attachment on the chainstays and not through an adapter.. I read bad things about that adapter snapping while using it with loaded panniers. Did it hold up to you?
About the paint, I have had a scratch due to a rock hitting the frame, but the black coating they use as primer is very nice, because it didn't revealed the raw steel. By the way, I love the red color. I don't care anymore about wheel sizes. It's a nonsense in my opinion because we travel slowly and with a lot of weight, so it doesn't matter if you arrive 20' later. 26" is way stronger and it gives me confidence. I am a bit old fashioned about wheel sizes. And with the kickstand, no problem whatsoever. One thing I dislike is about the position of the bolts where the kickstand ataches, because I must use it in the largest position available to have the bike in the most straight position. I consider the problems with the kickstand that people have, are caused by having the bike pretty much reclined. Both the kickstand and the chainstays suffer a lot if the bike is not standing in a straight position
@@biketouringaddict good to know about the paint, and understand you point about the wheel size, even so I truly think that a wheel well built with strong rims and the right count of spokes can be strong even 29er and not only for speed intended as going same pace as you do at the moment while saving energy with the big wheels but also more comfort off road with wheels that are still strong but flex more and can go over obstacles with better angle of attack.Saying that I cannot stop myself checking sjs website for a frame to build with 26inch wheels because I do not need more than that for the trails around here 😎 just love the look of a steel frame and the feel also. Gran trabajo!! Yo soy incapaz de montarla asi desde cero con lo que se . Lo único que cambiaria quizás seria los 3 platos intentaría poner un monoplato, como mucho dos y una buena piñonera, las hay ya de 52 dientes, lo habras visto en MTB, aunque desconozco su uso en 26" y si es igual de efectivo que en 29". Al final se queda un sistema mas simple quitando posibles fallos del desviador, ahorra peso y sencillo con un solo mando. Supongo que cambiar a freno de disco en la rueda de atras cuando cambies la rueda algun dia seria otro cambio
El freno de disco trasero lo tengo pendiente, pero he de cambiar la rueda. El 1x12 está guay pero no lo veo claro para cicloturismo. Con tantos km's y la cadena tan cruzada, se acelera el desgaste. Además de que tienes marchas un poco más largas con un 3x9 por ejemplo

El 3x9 es perfectamente valido en cicloturismo, mejor opcion que 1x12. Una tourer no es una mtb. Una mtb pesa de 11 a 15 kg, una tourer cargada llega a pesar 40kg y realmente vas a aprovechar ese plato de 22 o 24 dientes. Con un 1x12 tendrias que reducir mucho el plato para poder subir las cuestas con carga, y te faltaria velocidad en recta llana. 3x9 perfecto !!!!

Puse vbrake trasero porque la rueda que tenía no estaba preparada para disco. El freno de disco es mecánico y el cuadro lo compré por internet, aunque ahora vale 300$ más que entonces a través de sjscycles

Me estoy pensando montar una bici para cicloturismo yo también desde cero, pero me echa para atrás el precio de los componentes y todo lo relacionado con las bicis ahora mismo, que está disparado... Por cierto, muy curiosa esa combinación de freno de disco delante y freno de zapata detrás, nunca la había visto.

Why fit a rear V-brake when you have perfectly good disc tabs? And why fit a derailleur drivetrain to a dedicated Rohloff frame like the Thorn Nomad ?? That kickstand mount for the Pletscher 2-bolt stand is unusual but pretty cool.
I fitted a rear V-brake because I didn't have the rotor and the caliper available at that time. The same for the rohloff. But right now I have the two things installed. I want to make a review of the new changes soon, when I can do a long bicycle tour. I am a fan of the kickstand. The only drawback is that it's installed too high with the thorn's adapter, but it gives safety to the integrity of the frame
@@biketouringaddict ah, OK. That explains it all. I have the Pletscher Multizoom clamp-on kickstand and have had no concerns at all for the frame's integrity. I did break the stand after 2 years when loading the panniers on a heavily-loaded desert tour. But the replacement has worked without fail for nearly 10 years now.
@@petesig93 Well, that could be luck or that you take a good care of your bike. But it's well documented, the problems you can have with kickstands clamped to the frame triangle. You can use vbrake or discs at the rear. The truth is, a good avid vbrake it's more than enough to stop the bike.

Yes, I did some changes to the transmission and installed a rear disc brake. But the rest is the same. It's a nice bike
