    Those and the Messenger 2 are pretty cool radios. My Uncle used to work for the Johnson company so I inherited all of their literature and dozens of them many still new in their original Boxes as well as the 223 and I still service them quite often for customers as I also inherited alot of nos cosmetic parts, tubes it's endless.

      Wow! Nice. You don't see many of these around anymore but the ones you do see can still be made to work if the parts are available. You might want to think about setting up an Ebay store and helping out those of us that like to keep the old stuff running. I owned a 223 back in the day. Nice radio and built like a tank. Thanks for watching.

    In about 1978ish, I had and used a "Whiteface", cool radio but very limiting...I didn't use it to long before I offed and moved onto something else, still have a soft spot for them and maybe one day, Ill get the band back together. :) You do good work, your a good tech, like how you walk through things without getting all technically, thanks. ~Jack, VEG

      The old radios were a lot cooler, like old cars, but they were simple and limiting for sure.
      I try to keep the talk on my videos in the region where most folks can get something out of it. There are times though when you have to do a deep dive.

    Hello. I just recently acquired my grandfather's Johnson viking messenger whiteface. All tubes are still in it. And crystals too. The main thing missing is the part you call the vibrator. What is that technically called. I cannot for the life of me find a replacement but assuming it's under a different name. I really wish I could get it working again rather than only a show piece. Means a lot since it was my grandpa's. I did get his messenger 250 and an astatic d104 as well.

    • @AERVBlog
      @AERVBlog  ปีที่แล้ว

      They really are called vibrators.
      here is a link. I have not dealt with these guys before. I searched for "replacement 12 volt vibrators"
      www.tubesandmore.com/products/vibrator-12-volt-3-pin-negative-ground
      Unfortunately they are not cheap anymore.
      Thanks for watching and good luck with the Johnson White Face.

    Amazing to see that kind of receiver sensitivity without any tune-up! I am surprised you didn't look at the selector switch on that channel 7 receiver problem - the whole crystal assembly looked a bit loose. Not sure which manual you were looking at for the GRC-171 (maybe the initial alignment) but we used 3 uV @ 30% mod. for a SINAD of 10 dB minimum for USAF owned equipment.Thank you for an interesting video.

    • @AERVBlog
      @AERVBlog  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I knew the switch was dirty but I had all channels making at least static at one time. I probably should have checked the switch contacts first but they are a bit hidden and not easy to see. Occam's razor and all, go for the simplest first. The crystal assembly did wobble a bit but I couldn't see any way to fasten it down more.
      I found a document online called 'Test Plan for simulated operational test of AN/GRC-171 Transceiver'. It says the "The testing to establish DMBTF will be accomplished by the Government at McClellen AFB, Sacramento, California in the Engineering Test Laboratory." It is dated 22 Sep 1975 and is document Test Plan MMEE 1-75. It was just the first thing I came across. I guess this test is for long term receiver test to judge Mean Time Between Failure so the 6uV was simulating a fairly good signal. Thanks for watching.

      @@AERVBlog The old GRC-171 was replaced by the GRC-171B(V)4
      , a real brute that could be encrypted and was also frequency agile using GPS to time hops. It did AM, FM and TADIL. We could send data from our 250 nmi range 3D radar to be displayed in the cockpit of a fighter!

      @@davidv1289 wow! It really is amazing the stuff the military gets before the rest of us. I remember some of the equipment in CIC aboard my ship in 67-72, USS Charles Berry DE1035. It looked mighty impressive at the time but probably would all look like boat anchors now. Not there is anything wrong with boat anchors mind you.

      @@HavingFunRepairs Yes, a very interesting radio to learn and work on. Although 99% of the time it was just routine checks as they never seemed to break. Most of my repair time was spent on GRT-21/22 and GRR 23/24 transmitters and receivers which were a joy to work on even when they were broken - even the 50 watt linear amplifier was fun.

    So, do both rx and tx crysrals operate on the same frequency? If I wanted channel 20 ( 27.205), would I use a channel 20 crystal in both slots?

    • @AERVBlog
      @AERVBlog  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The receive crystal is 455KHz below the receive frequency but the transmit crystal is cut to frequency so you would need two separate crystals. For 27,205 the receive crystal would be 26,750. Thanks for watching

  • @HavingFunRepairs
    @HavingFunRepairs 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's very good rcv sensitivity. About the same you would get from old Air Traffic rivet switch radios.

    • @AERVBlog
      @AERVBlog  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just looked up the AM/GRC-171tranceiver. The alignment instructions say to set the generator at 6uv which seems a little high. I would hope it would do better than that. For an actual conversation the Johnson really needs about 1uv but I still think that is good. Modern radios are good down to .15uv for hearing it and .3uv for a conversation. The black face Johnson is quite a bit better. So, tubes can keep up with the modern stuff. Thanks for watching.

    • @HavingFunRepairs
      @HavingFunRepairs 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @AERVBlog the AN/GRC-211 had an additional module that allowed for as low as 1.5uV as compared to the 171. The single channel VHF and UHF varients AN/GRR- 23 and AN/GRR-24 were similar to the 171 though. Those radios were given more modern synthesisers close to the 80s/90s that by technical order allowed for injecting a 3uV signal modulated at 30%/1kHz while under alignment/tune. We replaced them with GD CM-300/350s this past couple years. I agree with your assessment they were very much capable of alignment with a much weaker signal. For the life of me I don't know why, but I presume the technical orders were optimized for what was better listening for Air Traffic Controllers. We would check AGC and could get audible tones demodulated as low as 109-110dBm. Sometimes lower. I've been wondering if you were ever a ground rat once upon a time (military ground radio career). Regardless really enjoy your channel!

      They are internal to the right of the crystal bank as you look at the front. Pretty touchy though and the radio will splatter badly if they are mistuned.

    Ok you pointed it out towards the end of the video you pointed at it their is two of them side by side you said people would switch them out to get more power ok so what can you switch those to? I have a box of stuff with all kinds of those things on it too with the bumble bee things as well what should I put in the place of those two rectangular grey box things with the red lettering?? If you know something I can put there I most likely have it in my box of stuff I found on the side of the road I guessing that may be why it can't transmit the radio keys up but no watts but great receive on the radio

      Are you talking about the 2 sand resistors on the bottom in the center? If so those are resistors. One is 3900 ohms, 3.9K ohms. Is that the one that burnt up? If so check your output tube before you turn the unit on as it will probably be shorted.
