I think it’s a great introduction if one thinks of it as set up in the sort of classic uhhhh what could you call it, “critical theory manner?” The intro and the outro to the text are the heavy hitters, the middle is fluff more so than concise, with the intro being very clear; which illustrates that Baudrillard could be concise and make his point easily understood when he so chose to. Yet in the middle, including the beaubourg chapter on his hatred of the architectural monstrosity that is that building, it’s a lot more Baudrillard just being Baudrillard and poetic, and abstract, and everything you would expect. I enjoyed his chapter on Crash though, as I’d read the Ballard novel, and seen the Cronenberg film a few times; the quintessential “postmodern” pieces of media. I was surprised at actually getting more out of simulacra and simulation, I was expecting some difficulty. I came away from his “forgetting Foucault” essay completely confused as to what he even said in it though. Just absolutely nothing gained from reading that one; so I guess it depends ya know?
Or his reference to the Holocaust made for television series in the 70’s, getting another chapter there of the simulacrum and hyperreality these events entailed. I view Baudrillard as a reactionary figure, well outside of his contemporaries as far as touching subjects and making statements no one else would. Hence the consistent “crypto-conservative” title affixed to him, which I don’t think is wholely unjustified. A lot more punk rock than Foucault was, that’s for sure.
