I've seen a lot of teachers thru the years, but you are one of the best. Giving your time like this is just wonderful. You explain everything so well, I'll give it a try. thanks so much.
@suzukiskeptic What I was saying (b4 TH-cam cut me off) is I LOVE the way you are sorting out the pattern, and I wanted to invite you to create a video response explaining your approach to the Hokum bow pattern on this tough song. GREAT POINT! Thanks! --L
Hi Suzukiskeptic Nobody taught me the OBS...I picked it up by playing it with friends and copying them. I totally understand what you are saying "2+3+3+3+3+2"....but it's the same result!! You are choosing to divide the pattern differently (to sort it out in your head) The way I divide it starts each pattern on the lower strings, the way you divide it tracks the pattern as starting on the middle strings. Your approach may make it even easier! I invite you to make a video respns
Hi Ben, you can learn a TON on TH-cam! If you get overwhelmed or decide you need more help, check out my other online courses (very organized, sequential, thorough) at www.RedDesertViolin.com
Hey, I suggest listening Michael McCanless' version of this song. He played electric fiddle and had a crazy tone. Just search for "hank iii continental club" and you'll find a video named iii.wav. I have a comment on that video, telling where the song starts.
Hi Dale, that can be frustrating to not get it. (i know the feeling) But here's an idea: The Orange Blossom Special is a very difficult song to learn the HOKUM bowing on. Why don't you study up on the Hokum bow pattern on something easier, internalize it, and then come back to the OBS? I would suggest learning "Back Up and Push", which is SLIGHTLY easier. I don't know of easier songs that use the HOkum bow pattern....but I DO know they exist, so you might also search for a song that uses the hokum pattern WITHOUT double stops. Once you get that bow pattern, I think you'll be able to tackle the OBS. (By the way, I have a whole series of awesome lessons teaching Back Up and Push FOR FREE on my Red Desert Fiddle youtube channel....should be able to search and find it) Good luck!

Thaks a lot for this tutorial.
I think of it as the rhythm in In The Mood, by Glenn Miller,
OMG....that is BRILLIANT! That's EXACTLY the rhythm! Thanks for that!
Aww... I can't take credit, I saw it on a Vassar Clemments video years ago. Thank YOU for teaching fiddle. Cheers, Alison
