    I'm a listener to Derek's podcast and subscriber to his fitness programs on his site. I'm about 45% through his 16 week XC off season training program and they are awesome. The first two sections out of four have been unreal for developing a ton of core strength and balance. All of the movements are extremely functional and I can't say enough how much it's already helped me.

    I really like this vid man! I've talked to too many people that think hard work in the gym won't improve their cycling -- it's ridiculous! This program is solid and I'd like to add a few exercises just to mix things up because a routine gets stale after a while and on your adventures you might not have access to a gym. 1) pistol squats 2) gator crawls 3) wood choppers(fantastic, but will need a resistance) You can find tutorial videos all over youtube easily and when done correctly your core is going to be tight! Keep up the good work, dude.

    • @dialedhealth

      @@dialedhealth Same! They're amazing! I bet you've done them before tbh I didn't know what they were called until my friend had me do them and maybe it was because we also had to drag a dumbbell on the floor during idk if that was just a variation but it works wonders!

    Hey Brian. SOOO awesome to watch you implement strength training into your routine. it SEEMS like your type of riding would benefit greatly by getting in as much heavy strength training you can do. not sure if you've ever seen some of the workouts that Kate Courtney does, but something like that WITH heavy ass weights. As I get older, I'm finding a lot of the problems I've had have been muscular imbalance or postural issues. Those of use that do repetitive motions or...sit in front of a desk all day... can really pay for it. Balancing muscle groups (chest with back especially) and correcting postural problems really helps with all kinds of pain (i.e. neck, back, etc). Lots of good exercises to help correct rounded shoulders / pelvic tilt, etc. Just make sure to take it easy with the weight, especially for your shoulders. You can really cause some nasty imbalances if you overdo it and regaining stability isn't fun. I really like using bands as it is fairly easy to control the intensity to a high degree, but they're also low weight, inexpensive and easy to bring with you if you have to travel.

    Brian, did you ever have your VO2 max checked? That way you can see on paper if your endurance is going up.I had open heart surgery in 2002 a 4X bypass and a while after that I started doing some decent/intense treadmill workouts at high angles because I used to have to take the BRUCE PROTOCOL TEST at the Hospital once a year, its designed to basically get your heart rate up as high as possible after a warm up to test your cardio and heart function at a high level then see how your heart rate decreases back to a normal level.

      Most calisthenics would work if you look at a biomechanical analysis of mountain biking online you will see all the muscles used and where and from their you can pick your calisthenics exercises to suite the muscles you need and then adjust them but I would recommend dips grip grip pull ups dead hands for grip strength, sedo planche push ups for shoulders, planks and side planks for core, then pistol squats and normal squats for legs then after a few weeks some power conversion training so just making all the calisthenics exercises more powerful and adding in some plyometrics.

    Been searching for a strength programme for a while, looking to get started after the Christmas break. I'm riding as well as ever at 52, a dietary change has seen me get better which is great but I want to continue improving and extend my ability to ride hard for years to come. I've seen a few programmes advertised and have been put off by the pushy websites and FB over selling. Derek comes across very well, knowledgeable but no ego. I'm very tempted but would have loved some interval sessions to have been incorporated into the programmes. Still my favoured option from the strength aspect alone though. Enjoy your vids and liked the collaboration with Andrew, I guided him around The Surrey Hills for his vid there.

Also, not sure what the deal is with that whoop thing. It's a free band, but you pay $30 and then there's subscription? Website isn't really clear at all on what it provides or how much it will cost. I think most people would be better off with the one time cost of a decent sport smartwatch, and it would do more too.

    I recently built a enduro bike it's probably around 20 kg, coil front and rear. but it fits me and rides great, it was worth the extra weight, but before I was riding a too short bike was quite tiring, it worked my arms and the rest of my upper body a lot, it was an unnecessarily difficult balance act, but new bike will not be abusing me. so I hope I won't be in as much pain and get as fatigued, the first few rides I noticed it made a huge difference.

    • @bkxc
      @bkxc  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I could see how that could be a big surprise!

  • @mtbboy1993
    @mtbboy1993 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have a long way to go to even look close to as ripped as you do. my upper body is more like a geek/nerd from movies, but not my legs. I am clearly gaining strength and balance, endurance, but stil la long way to go for me, and I can't work out as much as I wish.
    I suffer from back and neck that can easily get thrown out, so no hardtail gnar for me. But I will continue to work out as much as I can.
    but I just can't do any saheldues, evry thing is random, if I am good I ride and work out. so if I am good I ride as much as I possibly can, and if it does not suit to ride I work out as much as I can.
    working my upper body including arms, with dumbbells has improved my riding a lot, I can now do one handed wheelies, which was impossible before.
    I don't remember how long it tool to get to this point but probable a year or 2.

    • @mtbboy1993
      @mtbboy1993 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dialedhealth I tried to do this movement no, but only did it on one side cus my right foot is problematic, it hurts probably due to misalignment it has been trough it needs few days to get back to normal, but I managed to do it without any back twisting or hip misalignment, or pain, but then I tried again and my mid back got slightly misaligned, but seems like my lower back, and hips are more stable, than they used to be.
      but without dumbbell, not tried with yet.
      maybe the techy riding I have been doing, and other work outs, even they were not often as I want, but maybe it helped to build up strength in the hip.
