Carlsen holds the record for the longest streak of unbeaten games, but Kasparov holds the record for the longest streak of won tournaments - between 1981 and 1990. Let me repeat - for almost a decade, Kasparov won every single tournament that he played in. That's just insane. Magnus is definitely among the strongest players ever and, since the criteria for "the best player ever" are somewhat arbitrary, I don't think it's unfounded to have an opinion that he is the best player ever, but people seem to have forgotten just how much of a genius Kasparov was, which is why personally I still consider him to be the GOAT, with the caveat that Carlsen's career is not over yet and if he continues like that for a few more years I will probably change my mind, but for the moment - Kasparov is the GOAT in my opinion.

Even outside of chess, in sports where there is no particular engine-like softwares to analyse precisely, being at the top with any sort of consistency is exceedingly hard. The major difference is that you've got every other contenders to prepare against, meanwhile they can truly focus their efforts on you since they know you are the most likely to defeat them. Also, being at the top makes it more likely for you to play games and the more games you play, the more intel you give away. Really, it takes a lot of skill and dedication to defend a world championship every year for almost a decade. It's also a lot of pressure during the game but outside as well. Imagine if, everytime you lose a game, there are dozens of articles and youtube videos talking about it and enthusiastically declare you finished, that must suck greatly.
Its so beautiful when you actually begin to understand whats going on these games. Even though I cant actually see or begin to find 90% of these moves every one of them just looks genius. Chess is such a beautiful game

What I love best about Magnus is how he's brilliant at avoiding a loss, not just how he wins. It's like he has no pride in avoiding a draw and is a master at avoiding defeat without victory.
I agree. It's this quality that has helped him maintain his title for so long. In endgames he is capable of turning draws into wins more than anyone else, which allows him to take less risks of defeat. He does not need to be aggressive in middlegame in order to win like many other GMs do, he is perfectly comfortable being drawn and trying to finesse a win later on.

Holding onto the #1 spot for a decade is a compliment on his temperament because all the others are targetting him with engines to help them. Magnus also gets help from engines but he cannot equally study all his challengers the way they can him .
Are we sure it was 2011? Wasn’t Anand champion until 2013, when Carlsen defeated him and took over the title? Anand defeated Boris Gelfand in 2012 and retained his world champion title.
