Pretty much, Kaede was hung as her body was used to play an easy song incorrectly on a giant piano as she was having stones thrown at her and was being booed. She also most likely saw the horrified expressions of everyone else, and didn't touch any black keys, which the song is mostly played on, because she wasn't the real blackened. And to top it all off, her dead body was crushed and impaled at the end. All for a murder she didn't commit. Screw you, Shitmugi. Kaede didn't deserve this. This was a harsh execution with a lot of parts to it, which is why I consider it to be the saddest and most gruesome execution in all the games.

hot take: i think the twist would’ve hit better if shuichi and kaede swapped places. imagine starting off shuichi, a similar character to hajime and makoto, it feels familiar. not only that he’s the ultimate detective, so it feels like the game would be easy. but then suddenly ofc, he’s framed for murder and dies, and now you have to play as kaede. a confident girl who doesn’t really have detective skills though. it would’ve been such a jarring twist that i think would’ve hit the player better, especially too because it fully breaks the conventions of the series for once.

(Not so) Fun facts about her execution. (Ignore that this is 5 years late) The song "Der Flohwalzer" is mostly played on black keys, but in the execution it is played on white, to hint at the fact that Kaede is innocent. (If you kill someone, you are classified as a Blackend) I believe that it's not confirmed, but popular theory is that Kaede's execution took around 8 hours, she survived that long by breathing every time she landed on a key. Relating to the first fact, Der Flohwalzer is a pretty easy song to play. But in the execution the song was played wrong, probably annoying Kaede considering that she is the Ultimate pianist. In the end when the case is closed, it was allegedly (I think) supposed to decapitate Kaede, but that was considered to be too brutal, so the monokid was decapitated instead. Some people claim to hear the words "Innocent" whispered three times during the end of her execution, though I can't hear it myself. Kaede enjoyed seeing the smiles on peoples faces when she played piano, however her last moments were spent being boo'd at and having rocks thrown at her, from her "playing" the piano. Kaede truly believed that she was the killer, probably spending her last moments feeling guilty about a murder which she didn't commit. To explain a bit, I think that the shot-put ball missed Rantaro, but the mastermind (No spoilers other then Kaede's case) threw another ball at Rantaro, and framed Kaede, which they could do since they were the mastermind. That's it! Most of these are theoretical and controversial facts. I apologize if I got some of the details of the theories wrong.

According to Wikipedia, there are three general types of this excruciating cause of death. First is hanging, suspension from a cord wound around the neck. Second is ligature strangulation, strangulation without suspension using some form of cord-like object called a garrote. The third is manual strangulation, strangulation using the fingers or other extremities. The type that Kaede experienced is obvious: hanging. However, this isn't your usual hanging case. In a typical hanging, the victim's esophagus collapses or the neck separates from the spine as soon as the rope's slack runs out, causing a quick snap. Kaede's... definitely was not like that at all. Hers was more of a suspension hanging; the worst kind. Typically, the noose would cut off circulation to the brain and strangulate the victim until death. The victim can squirm and jerk for up to twenty minutes, depending on how loose the noose is. Needless to say, Kaede endured her strangulating for a while. Going back and forth between choking and gasping for air after using the piano keys for leverage, Kaede suffered physically and psychologically.
Not only that, but the part around her neck is the metal collar, which wouldn't grip her throat like a noose. So she would have died very very slowly (as suggested by the large clock in the background)
Headcanon: Monodam was trying to save her. Monokid's rope was lifting Kaede into the air with the intention of hanging her while Monodam was only pulling his own rope in an attempt to let her touch and breathe again. It got faster because of how adamant about killing Kaede Monokid was and eventually at the end, Monodam snapped in fury and killed Monokid for murdering Kaede.

“The Flea Waltz” or “Der Flohlwazer” is one of the first songs played by Japanese children on the piano due to it being one of the easiest songs to play. It’s generally played with the black keys. This execution is so painful mentally for Kaede due to the fact that she wasn’t playing it on the black keys, she was playing it on the white keys. The reason is a spoiler, there’s a comment about it. The song was also played horribly and because this is probably the first song she mastered, they chose this song to torture her with. Also, this execution, by my count, lasted 9 hours. I counted myself, it could be less or even more, we don’t see the clock all the time. There were also stones thrown at her, which is what people used to do as an execution method in (I believe) Japan. It’s currently unknown if she died to the stoning or the h*nging. Also, Shuichi said to Kaede once “I would like to see one of those concerts.” He technically did, which would be this execution. This is why this execution is so brutal. She was mentally and physically tortured, and her talent was mocked by how she was used to play this simple children’s song so horribly. RIP Kaede, you didn’t deserve it.

hot take: i think the twist would’ve hit better if shuichi and kaede swapped places. imagine starting off shuichi, a similar character to hajime and makoto, it feels familiar. not only that he’s the ultimate detective, so it feels like the game would be easy. but then suddenly ofc, he’s framed for murder and dies, and now you have to play as kaede. a confident girl who doesn’t really have detective skills though. it would’ve been such a jarring twist that i think would’ve hit the player better, especially too because it fully breaks the conventions of the series for once.

(Ignore that this is 5 years late)
The song "Der Flohwalzer" is mostly played on black keys, but in the execution it is played on white, to hint at the fact that Kaede is innocent. (If you kill someone, you are classified as a Blackend)
I believe that it's not confirmed, but popular theory is that Kaede's execution took around 8 hours, she survived that long by breathing every time she landed on a key.
Relating to the first fact, Der Flohwalzer is a pretty easy song to play. But in the execution the song was played wrong, probably annoying Kaede considering that she is the Ultimate pianist.
In the end when the case is closed, it was allegedly (I think) supposed to decapitate Kaede, but that was considered to be too brutal, so the monokid was decapitated instead.
Some people claim to hear the words "Innocent" whispered three times during the end of her execution, though I can't hear it myself.
Kaede enjoyed seeing the smiles on peoples faces when she played piano, however her last moments were spent being boo'd at and having rocks thrown at her, from her "playing" the piano.
Kaede truly believed that she was the killer, probably spending her last moments feeling guilty about a murder which she didn't commit.
To explain a bit, I think that the shot-put ball missed Rantaro, but the mastermind (No spoilers other then Kaede's case) threw another ball at Rantaro, and framed Kaede, which they could do since they were the mastermind.
That's it! Most of these are theoretical and controversial facts. I apologize if I got some of the details of the theories wrong.

When my Brother got into Danganronpa, he loved to play the song Kaeda was ‘playing’ during her exacution (Because hes weird like that)
Back then, i was a pretty stupid person, and was pretty mentally stunted in some areas of basic knowledge, so when my brother told me that some random girl in Danganronpa played the song he was playing using her feet while hanging, i pictured some random girl hanging on the monkey bars while playing a piano with her feet. I was so amazed because that sounded so hard to master. Oh, how little i knew

As you could have guessed, Kaede's cause of death was strangulation. According to Wikipedia, there are three general types of this excruciating cause of death. First is hanging, suspension from a cord wound around the neck. Second is ligature strangulation, strangulation without suspension using some form of cord-like object called a garrote. The third is manual strangulation, strangulation using the fingers or other extremities.
The type that Kaede experienced is obvious: hanging. However, this isn't your usual hanging case. In a typical hanging, the victim's esophagus collapses or the neck separates from the spine as soon as the rope's slack runs out, causing a quick snap. Kaede's... definitely was not like that at all. Hers was more of a suspension hanging; the worst kind. Typically, the noose would cut off circulation to the brain and strangulate the victim until death. The victim can squirm and jerk for up to twenty minutes, depending on how loose the noose is.
Needless to say, Kaede endured her strangulating for a while. Going back and forth between choking and gasping for air after using the piano keys for leverage, Kaede suffered physically and psychologically.

Headcanon: Monodam was trying to save her. Monokid's rope was lifting Kaede into the air with the intention of hanging her while Monodam was only pulling his own rope in an attempt to let her touch and breathe again. It got faster because of how adamant about killing Kaede Monokid was and eventually at the end, Monodam snapped in fury and killed Monokid for murdering Kaede.
i dont know for sure because i dont know the anime, but i heard the execution lasted for 8 hours, and that they actually sped it up cause it was so long

1- your neck can't just hang for 8 hours without snapping
2-she did NOT get time to breath when she hit the notes,how can you breath in less than a split second?
3-she was getting lots of rocks thrown at her in fast speed,and at the end you can see her clothes being torn and bloodied. If she didn't die from hanging,she would've at least died from that before her execution hit the 8 hours mark
4-the students didn't show a single hint of exhaustion after her execution despite *apparently* watching her die for many hours straight
5-the students also were talking as if the execution was fresh. No sign it took a while either.

Danganronpa executions are known for being exaggerated for the eery/chaotic effect. The clock is most likely just a decoration.
Her execution likely lasted for about 3-4 minutes. That's just a guess though.

“The Flea Waltz” or “Der Flohlwazer” is one of the first songs played by Japanese children on the piano due to it being one of the easiest songs to play.
It’s generally played with the black keys.
This execution is so painful mentally for Kaede due to the fact that she wasn’t playing it on the black keys, she was playing it on the white keys. The reason is a spoiler, there’s a comment about it.
The song was also played horribly and because this is probably the first song she mastered, they chose this song to torture her with.
Also, this execution, by my count, lasted 9 hours. I counted myself, it could be less or even more, we don’t see the clock all the time.
There were also stones thrown at her, which is what people used to do as an execution method in (I believe) Japan. It’s currently unknown if she died to the stoning or the h*nging.
Also, Shuichi said to Kaede once “I would like to see one of those concerts.” He technically did, which would be this execution.
This is why this execution is so brutal. She was mentally and physically tortured, and her talent was mocked by how she was used to play this simple children’s song so horribly.
RIP Kaede, you didn’t deserve it.
