- The death of Tanzanian guitarist/bandleader Mbaraka Mwinshehe, following an automobile accident in 1979, resulted in the loss of one of the spearheads of East African dance music. Having established his reputation as a member of Morogoro Jazz, between 1964 and 1973, Mwinshehe continued to make his influence felt as the leader of his own band, Super Volcano, from 1973 until his untimely death six years later.
A self-taught guitarist, Mwinshehe played kwela music with Cuban Branch Jazz as a teenager. Studying singing with Salim Abdullah, a founding member of Morogoro Jazz who had gone on to form the Cuban Marimba Band, he continued to grow as a vocalist. Mwinshehe had yet to reach his creative apex when he died. In 2000, Dizim released the first of a promised series of reissues of Mwinshehe's music.

Mwinshehe singlehandedly ensured that the city of Morogoro is on my bucket list. If there are just 2 places for me to visit in Tanzania, one is Morogoro (to see the Uluguru Mountains that he sings about in Tambiko la Wahenga); and of course, Chato (for obvious reasons).

Music that motivated our growth during the teen period. I celebrate with Jacob Mwangi, Awino Lukas etc (1969) class one at St. Columban's Kitale.
Yes 1969 form 1 is when the Morogoro star shot into Mombasa when life was filled with hopes for the future.
I was lucky to have tried the legend's guitar on stage in 1973 at Pumzika Bar just near Tononoka where they played every evening and every weekend. Early that year, in my restless mind I had been returned from the Taveta border in my attempt to go to Tanzania to find Morogoro Jazz and join them.
