The way James Gunn turned the ongoing joke about Rocket thinking that raccoon is just an offensive word into him proudly saying "The name is Rocket. Rocket Raccoon" has to be one of the most satisfying moments in the MCU for me.
I think he shouldn't call himself 'Rocket Raccoon', no hero call themselves 'Star lord human' or 'Captain America human'

Cosmo had the best character arc of going from bad dog to good dog
One thing I love about Nebula in Guardians 3 is how much she cares about Rocket. They were the only 2 Guardians left after the snap so it makes sense why they care so much about each other. I also liked that the movie didn’t feel the need to tell you that. If you saw Endgame, you already know and if you didn’t (for some reason), it doesn’t matter because you can feel it
That and both their backstories being taken apart and being put back together to be “perfect” , it makes sense why they are as close as they are and care about each other as much as they do

@@bundydachosen1 right , when she said “this is worse than what Thanos did to me” it clicked so hard and made me remember their time together as the only Guardians left during Endgame
So here’s my defense of Peter Quill:
1. As you said, much of Peter and Gamoras relationship is implied, but based on what he says in GOTG 3, it seems like she was the love of his life. They had a 4 year offscreen relationship, there was definitely a deep connection between them.
2. Peter watched his mom die in the hospital of brain cancer when he was 8, and immediately after was abducted by aliens. Also, as you said, Yondu wasn’t a great dad. So, Quill is certainly not the most emotionally mature guy in the universe.
Also, what did Peter do to his dad the MOMENT he realized his dad killed his mom? He blasted him to hell. The exact same thing he did to thanos. He has a history of reacting to pain and loss this way, and I feel like a lot of people overlook that.
I love Peter so much so I agree 100%. I could go on and on personally lol
I personally LOVE that arc in Infinity War when he smashes Thanos against the head after he reveals he killed Gamora. It’s PERFECT for his arc, and very relatable.
I agree with all of you forreal. He's my favorite character ever even before the Mcu. Also, everyone is gonna be riding his dick when his character comes back and basically redeems himself😂
Yes! He deserves even more love! He has a pleasant personality, naive, childish but incredibly kind and empathic (like literally his first line in vol1). And at vol3 he is just forced to grow up fast through depression and alcoholism. All in his character isn't causeless appear from nothing.
I personally thought Nebula was quite annoying in vol.1&2 but after the snap she did a U-turn on me and is now one of my favorites. Probably the best character arc in the MCU.
She was so annoying in Vol 1, got a little better in 2, but yeah. Infinity war onward? I absolutely loved her in Vol 3, to the point I’m on board if they actually develop something with Peter.
Best character arc? Nah....the best arc has to be Iron Man.

@@arturocastroverde3349 She still annoyed me in Vol 2 though, but that was the turning point. Once she hit Infinity War she didn't annoy me anymore. It has nothing to do with screen time.

I’d have Starlord at 1 or 2. I think he is meant to be a flawed character. In his world of aliens and gods, he is just a human with very human flaws.

26:50 Nebula is also the first one to turn and follow Rocket in the epic slow walk scene after he says "I'm done running." Very intentional.
A few other small things like Rocket calling her "Nebs" at some point were nice acknowledgements of how much they worked together during the blip. I really like how they never explicitly said "hey remember when it was only us for 5 years?" but they communicate it through two characters who were never open about history/relationships with little observations like that.
Exactly. It's subtle not overly stated but we as a long MCU fan could understand that dynamic
And when Gamora lashes out at Starlord, she says she has a bunch of upgrades because of Rocket. It's really subtle but it hits.
I think the moment where groot talks, he isnt actually talking but its a nod to the audience saying "now you understand me too"
That's how I saw it too. Like how Gamora2 couldn't understand him at first, then she finally did after a while.

Star Lord is just a character with so much heart, while his ending feels like the logical step for his trilogy it doesn’t feel like the ending for his character’s complete journey. Similar to cap after civil war. I’m really interested to see where they take him now
Personally I would love it if it was over right then and there for Star Lord. To me he came full circle, and I’m satisfied with where he ended up.

I had always liked Rocket, his personality was hilarious. Vol. 3 has further solidified him as not only my favorite Guardian, but a favorite character throughout all of the MCU. Loved this movie along with Vol 1. and Vol 2.

The recontextualization of Drax caught me off guard. That he was always a dad and in the first film he was on a revenge trip. And that the Drax we see in Volumes 2 & 3 and the holiday special is closer to who he actually was. It flabbergasted me. And now I love Drax more than I gave him credit for
It's funny that it took Kragling like 10 years, since he wasn't snapped, to control the arrow.

The whole team have their quirks and characteristics that make them all so loveable and arcs that make them so compelling and interesting. In many ways they remind me of the Bebop crew from Cowboy Bebop. I’m not sure how I’d rank them all, but I know my top 2 would be Rocket and Star Lord. Rocket for his tragic backstory and moments in which he has shown how hurt he has been, but also for his funny banter and personality 😂
My favorite is Star Lord tho. In a lot of ways, he reminds me of one of my favorite characters of all time: Simon the digger from Gurren Lagann. This is a character who lost his mom, had a horrible father, lost his caring blue daddy, and his lover (the og). Yet he gets back up, leads his team, and does what needs to be done. In the end he passes on the leadership of the guardians making way for a new generation and stepping down from something that he no longer needs to be a part of. Maybe he didn’t get the ending he or us wanted for him, but it doesn’t matter. He’s fine with it, and we should be too. Like Simon, and his drill, he keeps digging. Plus he’s got exquisite taste in music 👌

I always wondered what James Gunn's reaction was to Star Lord's portrayal in the Avengers movies. I personally thought they did him dirty.
I think he's given some interviews for guardians 3 where he's said that as kindly as possible

@@ianhawke4761 it’s the novelty. Not a bad thing, but there’s something about the magic when a new thing surfaces, that can’t be replicated.
I like that Maria Bakalova voiced Cosmo. She portrayed the daughter of Borat and she was great in Bodies Bodies Bodies. My favorite is also Rocket. Bradley Cooper did a helluva job.
And Sean Gunn who did the motion caption for Rocket.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is all about Yondu in my opinion and I love his character so much. He’s funny, he’s charismatic, and the ark he goes down is so interesting to see play out. One of the best characters and one of my favorites of the MCU. Star Lord and Drax are still my favorite guardians though, I love their individual arks and the moments they bring that always make me laugh and smile.
Groot reminds me of chewbacca for some reason 😄
Nebulas character arc was the second most emotional for me ! When she heard rockets voice she literally practically cried and it made me cry it was such a full circle moment for her and i love the vision and direction they took with her !

Drax was so good in this movie, literally balled my eyes out at the end of vol 3. How can a guy dancing around a bunch of kids be so emotional?

The main reason that Peter was so hot headed in infinity war was that thanos had killed gamora and it was implied that he very much truly loved her so he may not have been the most emotionally stable at the time because thanos killed his girlfriend so he might ultimately hate thanos
I understand all of that.
You should rank all the projects the Guardians have appeared in (Trilogy, Avengers movies, Thor 4, and the special)
Thor Love and Thunder would definitely be at the bottom of the list 😆

Mantis got so much better in the Holiday special. Continued being funny and having great chemistry with Drax in guardians 3.
I was surprisingly sad when Ayesha died and Warlock was yelling “MOTHER!” James Gunn really knows how to set the mood.
He may have quarreled with her often, but he still had an unconditional love for her as his mother.
Definitely Rocket. He's suffered a lot 😭

My top 2 favourite Guardians are also my top 2 favourite MCU characters: Rocket and Nebula.
I loved Rocket for his personality and his hinted backstory before seeing Vol. 3, but Vol. 3 truly made me love him even more. To fully understand all that he went through makes him all the more tragic yet heroic and to see him finally embrace how he's a raccoon was so satisfying and cathartic.
Nebula was one of my favourites even since seeing Vol. 2 and Endgame was what made her my second favourite MCU character, especially the opening with her and Tony out in space. Then Vol. 3 just made me love her even more, especially with how she decides to be a parental figure to all those children as a way to move past what she endured with Thanos.
James Gunn is such a genius with these characters. I'm honestly jealous of him.
I love all of them but my favorite is easily Rocket!
I love Star lord and I think they’ve made him a more relatable character as he’s gone on and honestly I find him to be one of the most relatable MCU characters after spidey

Rocket was already my favorite volume three just made him 10 billion times better
Id like to add about Rocket and that scene on the ship at the end. Twice in his life he was in the middle of escaping when the high evolutionary comes to pick a fight, the first time Rocket is trying to save everyone and at the end, as a result of his rage in the fight, hes left only able to save himself. The second time, Rocket is trying to get away with just the racoons, hes only trying to save himself, until The Hi Evo comes in and picks a fight, this time however rocket controls his rage and goes back to save everything.
I got two more things I wanna add to this conversation, one I think its cool that Rocket also managed to invent better gravity control technology than the high evo and two if you go back and watch GotG V1 pay attention to how Rocket reacts when Ronan kills Groot.
Star Lord, I have to disagree, Gunn knew what he wanted to do with him in the first movie, set up the father storyline, and then needed to course correct after infinity war had him lose gamora and attack thanos. His characterization and decision in infinity war were in character in my opinion, because he did the same thing to ego. The only thing I agree with is the lackluster reveal of mantis being his sister, because it takes away from this being a group of random, broken people, finding comfort in family in one another. Having them be actual family takes away from that
Groot and yondu over star lord is crazy. Honestly either of those over mantis and gamora is odd to me as well. Gamora is a different character after infinity war, so I understand her not being top 5, but at least 6 or 7 for og gamora. And mantis doesn’t have as much of an arc as some of the top characters here, but the energy she brought to the holiday special and vol. 3 makes her top 5 for me for sure. She, as well as nebula, hold so many of the scenes together in vol. 3 that I couldn’t understand putting her as low as she is on this list. Drax is an odd one to rank, because there were times he was only there as a tool for comedy…but he also had a great arc, he’s easily the funniest, and his story in vol. 3 ends in such an amazing and emotional spot that makes me cry tears of joy each time. Rocket, nebula, drax, star-lord, groot, mantis, gamora, kraglin, cosmo. All characters from vol. 3. And taking into account their entire journeys. This is my favorite mcu movie, and one of my favorite movies period. And I love the amount of shine that each character gets. Above all else, that’s what really put it over as the best for me. Outstanding.
Some of the stuff that reads even deeper with Rocket after GOTG3:
1) In the first movie, he loses his closest friend, Groot.
2) In Volume 2, Peter comments on how he's just purposely being a jerk. Yondu even profiles this and now you understand that he really his trying to push people away, because he's afraid he'll get them killed, like the others before.
3) He bonds with Yondu and than can't let him go when told to leave without him. Then when Gamora is about to go to try and save Peter as well, Rocket knocks her out; Knowing that he's losing Yondu, anticipating that Yondu might not be able to save Peter so he could die too, and say to her "I can only afford to lose one friend today." He can't handle the idea of the loses piling up. He can't stand losing more people he cares about.
4) In Infinity War, he builds that bond with Thor after seeing all that he has lost and knows what he's going through. He councils him and when Thor says "If I'm wrong, what more could I possibly lose?" and Rocket's response of "Me personally, I could lose a lot." Because Thor is on a quest to kill Thanos, but more focused on Vengeance. So when he slips up and doesn't make the kill shot, he realizes that he forgot that there were other people who were on the line or could lose folks, including Rocket.
And then Rocket loses Groot for the 2nd Time!
5) In ENDGAME, he learns he's lost so many others, so now his closest bond is Nebula. When Tony asks what's up with Thor, Rocket's response of "He thinks he failed but then there's a lot of that going around, isn't there." can be viewed in a whole new light with his backstory. He's devastated when he sees the stones gone because it means they can't bring everyone back. Now you see him snap and Slap Thor and go off on him saying "You think you're the only one who lost someone!?" Then when everyone comes back, and then Thanos has his ship fire on everyone, you see him throw himself over Groot like "NO!!! I'M NOT LOSING YOU A THIRD TIME!!!!"
You Still Wonder What's With His Obsession With Limbs & Eyes And All That. You Could Think Back To How The High Evolutionary Added Parts To His Friends, But Then That Shouldn't Have A Humorous Effect On Rocket. Who Knows.
Still, An ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC ARC FOR HIM!

Rocket has always been my favorite, and not just among the Guardians. First time I saw the first film, the face he made when he said, "What's a raccoon?" caught my HELLA attention. However, it was when he pulled his gun on Drax in the bar on Knowhere, crying about his tribulations, that I fell in love with the guy.
Also, he didn't steal batteries because he was dumb. He stole them because he's a self-destructive criminal. Damn, I'm gonna miss the character.
I really enjoyed guardians of the galaxy 3 and rockets backstory was emotional and all the characters had their own arc!
Honestly I didn’t care about Mantis at first but after seeing her in the holiday special and volume 3 now I think she’s so funny and goofy Pom is a perfect actress and I really enjoyed seeing Mantis and Drax having that sort of brother sister relationship
I loved that past timeline Gamora didn't become Peter's love by movie's end. It would've been so predictable & would've totally made Gamora's death at the hands of Thanos totally meaningless having wrote themselves out of that impactful moment by having her pickup where old Gamora left off. I do like by movie's end she started to soften to the Guardians to the point where she now understands Groot but still does her own thing as a Ravager

Does anyone know why starlord doesn’t use his mask or rocket boots in volume three? Did I miss something in a past film?
It's either he was too drunk to grab them at the start, or Gunn wanted to "retcon" IW/EG because his mask was destroyed in Vol. 2 to maintain continuity.

I would have ranked Baby Groot and both versions of Gamora considerably higher, especially original Gamora.
I would have also ranked Yondu a bit lower, and especially Kraglin too.

I still dont understand why evryone craps on StarLord for Infinity War. I can honestly say, I would probably have behaved the same way if I literally just found out the a-hole in front of me just killed one of my loved ones for his "cause".
Logic goes right out the window at that point. It was the most human thing for him to react that way.
i really dislike how mantis takes away drax's memory of that situation. drax being hurt by that is how he could change, taking the pain away from that moment guaruntees in the next situation hes going to make the same mistake. its annoying that they get mad at him for his constant mistakes and then she does that which inhibits him from growing
This video made me greater appreciate the character conclusion in GOTG Vol. 3. I still would’ve done Star-Lord’s differently. I wanted him to hold his Grandpa’s hand on his death bed (what he didn’t do with his mother) then be introduced to his family.

I completely disagree about Starlord's character taking a hit in Infinity War. He reacted the EXACT same way in Volume 2 when he finds out that Ego killed his mom. Since when are people expected to be level headed when confronting the murderer of the love of their life? I find it perfectly in character for Starlord to lash out on Thanos in that moment, it makes way more sense than if he would've been level headed
Yeah, I know I would lash out if I caught the killer of someone I loved.

11. Gamora (2014)-There’s something that’s interesting about this version of Gamora, but because the movie couldn’t fully develop this Gamora, she can’t be terribly high
10. Groot 2-He has several moments that have been quite great, but I’ve never been huge on this version of Groot
9. Mantis-Even though I didn’t warm to her in Vol. 2, I really enjoyed her usage in both the Holiday Special and Vol. 3
8. Kraglin Obfonteri-He’s a very simple character who doesn’t have a massive arc, but that’s why I’ve always enjoyed this character
7. Gamora (Earth 616)-She’s by no means a scene stealer, but she worked quite well for what she was given
6. Peter Quill/Star-Lord-I loved him in the Vol. 1, but it doesn’t feel like Gunn fully knew what to do after that film, so unfortunately, I can’t put him in the Top 5
5. Drax the Destroyer-Much like Quill, I don’t feel like Gunn fully knew what to do with them during Vol. 2, Infinity War, & Endgame, but because of where they started and ended his journey, I can genuinely say that I love the character of Drax
4. Nebula-From daughter of Thanos, to antagonist out for rage, to anti-hero, to someone who cares about her family enough to be a Guardian of the Galaxy, Nebula is a character who shouldn’t have been a character with a great character arc, but she absolutely is
3. Groot-A character that should’ve been nothing but comic relief, but is given moments that are truly emotional and beautiful, which is the brilliance of James Gunn
2. Yondu Udonta-A fantastic character that’s given an amazing redemption arc that once again, shouldn’t have been as profound as it was, but it was absolutely deserved
1. 89P13/Rocket Raccoon-Even though he’s a talking raccoon, James Gunn crafted a character that has several layers of a tragic backstory, a parent to Groot, a friend to the rest of the guardians, and an incredibly compelling, powerful character arc all with great voice acting from Bradley Cooper
5. Drax in Holiday Special was also given the spotlight and played the bigger part of kidnapping Kevin Bacon to cheer up Star Lord
1. Nebula - for all the reasons you say. I loved Nebula even in GOTG1 but ever since her fight and reconciliation with Gomorra in GOTG2 she became my favorite.
2. Rocket- also the reasons you say. He went from hilarious to tragic. I love him.
3. Original Groot - all the reasons you say.
4. Original Gamorra - all the reasons you say. But up a few spots because her tragic sacrifice and performance in Infinity destroys me.
5. Starlord - he frustrates me but in a lovable way. I like his arc and I think his actions in Infinity War make sense, even if they’re way misguided.
6. Reborn Groot - same feelings as you but I like him a bit more.
7. Mantis - never quite worked for me. I find her fairly annoying.
8. Drax - I love him in #1 and I love the way he ends in #3 but I really hate him in #2, the Infinity saga, Holiday Special, and most of 3. I find the stupid/mean Drax character so irritating.
9. Yondu- I felt his redemption was really unearned. I still like the performance/character but I don’t like him as a Guardian.
Skipping all others because their onscreen stints as guardians are too minimal.

I think ur too logical sometimes with your rankings... For example with Star Lord everything u said is correct but still I would put him higher just because he's the heart of the guardians, he's funny, kind-hearted, and has some of the best scenes in the franchise. I get that nebulas arc for example is better written but is she really a character we care about more than Star Lord ? I think most people would say no. Its not a bad ranking and its yours but idk maybe its not all about how perfectly written they are sometimes and just about how they make the audience feel
