  • After the 70s mall came the 80s mall. Known for being the ultimate after-school hangout destination, packed with dimly lit arcades, food courts, novelty stores and other awesome nooks and crannies, their glory days have sadly come and gone.
Hopefully no one minds me using their footage. Enjoy.

As a 2000s kid I’d do anything to go back in time and experience the 80s everything just seemed so much more lively and colorful. Nowadays, you barely see any of that anymore. I hope one day we normalize mall shopping and arcades again that would be a dream.

    • @nole8923

It was indeed more lively and colorful. Compared to today it was a dreamworld. As a teenager you thought the rest of the world was like this oblivious to the fact that the rest of the world was in the crapper relatively speaking.

Online shopping only makes up 8% of over all retail sales. It accounts for very little. Just a several years ago it was at 5% of over all retail sales. It's not online shopping that's killing the malls. It's the fact that the American middle class is eroding. Wages are stagnant or going down and there isn't many jobs in the US.

I think rewinding like that is a great idea, I do days where I call them 80's days, too. Music, tv , movies..no internet. It is so peaceful and relaxing. I don't care to hear about this or that celeb, I don't care, they don't care about us, I do not need to know what they ate for bfast that day, who cares lol. I think some people now are so self impressed and self important, they lost their manners and respect for everyone else. It was just a great, better time back then. It's nothing but a headache now...look at the headlines, nothing but chaos , every single day, you don't get a break from it. We have to give ourselves a break from it. Good idea losing the phone. We survived just fine without it back then, we are too conditioned to think we can't go down the street to run one errand without it now. It's ridiculous.

Other times we were at Camelot Music, Hot Sam (pretzel), McDs, Luca Pizza, Orange Julius, Sears, JCP, Loews Theatres or just walked around the entire mall. The mall was the focal point for young people. The 80s mall scene can be summarized in the movie "Fast Times at Ridgemont High." Malls were awesome in the 1980s & 90s.

Grateful ‘85 baby here. I was born in the sweet spot so I could enjoy an existence and normalcy of living like this before the paradigm shift of information technology and the social media’ization of the internet from a potential utility for good into one that has caused anti intellectual echo chambers and been divisive and not helping being people together. I mean it does too but you know what I mean. Also Columbine in ‘99 and 9/11 changed everything too.
There’s no way that times will ever be able to be like what they were from the 80s-90s. I am the last generation that was able to straddle living life before culture changed from analog to digital, and from digital liquid to digital steam and beyond which we see today.

The arcade games! That's one of the highlights of going to the mall back in the late '70s to about the late '90s.
Also, the multiplex. In such theaters, I've seen movies like "The Empire Strikes Back", "Return of the Jedi", "Top Gun", "Crocodile Dundee 2", "The Dark Crystal" (better than "Labyrinth"), "The Neverending Story" (I've also seen the 2nd one, which was *meh*), "Star Trek 4", "Tron", "Fantasia" (when it had this "new" digitally recorded soundtrack), my second time in my life when I saw "Snow White", and my first time seeing "Cinderella", "The Land Before Time", "Superman 2"... that's about all the '80s movies I can recall seeing in the mall multiplexes.

There is no such thing as a wrong era to be born in. If you think the past was better, you’re not trying hard enough to make the best of your present time. Being quite similar to the video. However I think it's sad today, kids get stuck in their phones... and the only places they hang out is outside convenience stores and Mcdonald's.
I'd have loved to have been a teenager in the 80's, you can see from this video and movie's of that period, that they were simpler better times. Arcade machines are a rarity nowadays, where people play their games on phone's instead.
