DIY, or do-it-yourself, is a great way to customize the look of your home and ensure that it embodies your own sense of style. To DIY your own shade, you'll need a few basic supplies: a blank, white lamp shade is a shape of your choice with the appropriate fitter for your light; a hot glue gun or glue; scissors or an x-acto knife; a seamstress measuring tape; and, finally, the various materials you will be using for decorating your shades.
Our first featured DIY style is the modern shade with traditional appliques. Starting with a blank shade, you can find appliques or stick-ons at your local craft store. We decided to go with a floral theme for this video. Arrange the appliques to suit your preference on the shade, and use your glue gun to set them in place.
Our second DIY shade style is the bohemian shade with wrapped yarn. For this shade, you want to start with a blank shade and colored yarn of your choice. We went with a simple black-and-white theme. Wrap the yarn around the shade, either going vertically or horizontally, and varying the yarn color to create eye-catching patterns. After each wrap, hold the yarn in place with your glue.
The third featured DIY shade style is the farmhouse shade with mock pleats. This style involved wrapping your blank shade in a fabric of your choice. Choose a lighter fabric if possible to ensure that it does not block the light. Cut the fabric to be twice the circumference of the shade. Then, overlap the fabric on the shade, pinching it to create pleats. When satisfied with the pattern, use glue to hold the fabric in place.
Next up is the modern organic shade with dowels. This contemporary modern look involves arranging wooden dowels on the outside of your blank shade. You can find these packaged at your local craft or hardware store. Place them on your shade, staggering them in height or arranging in a pattern, and securing them to the shade with glue. Remember to leave some space between the dowels to allow light to shine between the gaps.
Finally, our last DIY shade style is the coastal shade with tassels. As always, start with a blank shade. For this video, we used store bought tassel trim. First, measure the circumference of your shade and cut your trim to that measurement. Use your hot glue gun to secure the trim in your desired spots around the shade until the shade is covered. To complete the look, we also added decorative tassels along the top rim.
Use one of these ideas, or treat them as inspiration to DIY the perfect lamp shade to fit your home and style.
