I purchased a decent collection, but did I overpay for it? Donations and Fan Mail: Very Gary Comics PO Box Lagrangeville, NY 12540 Instagram: verygary_comics #comicbooks #comiccollections #cgc
Hi Gary - thanks for taking us on these trips and for sharing the experience. The price, potential sales and anticipated profit analysis is great (love this format). Good luck with this collection and as always "keep it comics".
Good luck man. Everyone always thinks these things are a sure thing but thank you for being honest and shedding light that it's not as easy as it looks.
So here I am, sitting around waiting for another awesome VeryGary hunt video, unboxing video, hell I'd watch a VeryGary putting his bandana on video hahaha. But seriously man, let's go!!! Love the channel my guy.
👍✌👍 Very Cool Gary Thanks for taking us with you on the Ride my friend, hope it all works out for you Brother look forward to the updates, I dont think you spent too much just think its gonna take some extra time to get to the other side on this one 👍✌👍 keep up the GREAT work Brother 👍
I appreciate you taking us along this process. I just bought a $600 collection and am also looking to make my money back using CGC. This is my first time intentionally buying with the goal of flipping for a profit, and you've really inspired this. Thanks for taking us a long the way. Even if you just break even, you probably learned a lot and that has value too.
Using CGC locks in the grade and therefore the price for that book. The chances people are going to "overpay" for a comic goes down if they know the exact grade. If Gary's Walking Dead #1 wasn't graded, who knows how much somebody would pay. Then again, you have the chance of hitting a home run if the grade is really good because most of the premium sales are CGC sales.
@Steve F . I think you answered your own question regarding "who knows what someone is would pay". The answer is less than a CGC copy. There is a premium built into CGC pricing as it eliminates uncertainty. CGC maximizes the price at a given grade. Sure I guess you could have a guy could think your copy is a few grades higher than it is, or at least enough difference to cover the premium cost and then some, but that would require a significant and substantial difference in their subjective grading versus CGCs grading.
I used to run the biggest comic book store on the west coast in the 80's and 90's and we loved buying people's collections, it was always an adventure plus we had same philosophy as you to turn those books as fast as possible to avoid having dead inventory. I think you didn't over pay to much, but best way to get the $ back fast is to take all the crap books nd have a blowout sale over the weekend 2 for a dollar. Send out invites to your clients and they will come. I have been out of the biz for 2 decade's and no longer collect, but I'm fasinated by how changed the industry is. I just signed up for your channel, look forward to newer content.
You're right...having a great video content for your channel (because it's a business for you) is just as important. Love it so keep it up! I think you made out decently. As you said, might be a slow move but you will turn a profit.👍
I think you did good even if you hold on to inventory till the next con your creating content keeping the the action going keep doing what you doing love your channel @verygarycomics plus you got some nice short boxes
Great video, and thanks for the content. This video really puts things in perspective when comparing to my collection. I have similar things in mine but not nearly as many slabs. I'm sure if you run another 6 hour auction you'd see a return, hahaha.
thanks for telling us what you paid for the collection.it sounds like a good deal for that collection. i think you will make some money when it' all said and done.i cant wait to see what the star wars #1 comes back from cgc. great video gary ,take care and have a wonderful day
I think this is one of the best videos you done it shows the real risk of buying collections. Its not always buying low selling high and making thousands in profit.
Gary, First off, loving your content, keep up the good work. I’m finding your transparency refreshing and it’s always good to see and hear the actual work and risk that goes into acquiring a large collection with the intent to flip it and keep a hobby going. One of these days I may look into learning how to press my books. 🤷🏽♂️
Hey Gary, maybe consider a "deep dive" long-form video on the remainder boxes, that would be cool to see the lower-end depth of the collection. Still, very good video and insight. My mind was borderline 3K on the collection but I think with a few quick flips, you're solid. MAJOR THUMBS UP on the content man. Keep up the good work!
Great video, I like how you told us how much you paid and outlined the thinking on how you were gonna make it back + profit. Would love to see that continue to happen on the Collection purchases, I find it very interesting. Also that TWD1 should definitely cut nearly in half already. I think it was worth it but like you said will take work/time.
I've been collecting comics here in the UK for about 35 years, but to nowhere near the extent that you do it, mate! I've been watching your videos for a couple of weeks now, and I must say I'm incredibly impressed with your amazing, encyclopaedic knowledge of key issues, first appearances and the like. I'm certainly no expert, however, but I'd say you didn't overpay for this collection, I mean, how much is a slabbed Walking Dead #1? That alone must go for megabucks, no? Anyway, thanks for all the great videos!
One of the best collections I've seen in a long time. $4500 isn't an overpay. I'd say good deal. Books like Miles Morales ultimate spider-man 1 variant in a 9.8 are going to go for high prices. Congrats Gary!
Thank you for sharing 🙏🏼👍🏼broke down what you paid. I appreciate that Good video keep doing your thang Money comes and money goes but the HUNT continues
Thanks for sharing the price I don't know how many "I just body collection" videos where they won't tell you what they paid.... as someone who wants to buy collections it's very valuable information.
Gary....you may have already covered this on previous videos so I apologize if I am going over ground already covered. Getting back into comics at age 68 after collecting since the 60’s but new to the technology involved in grading. Can you address what cleaning and pressing involves, the cost, and where you recommend us going to? Thanks so much!!!
Amazing calculated “risk”; I can only imagine the amount of knowledge firing at the same time. Based on what I saw you made out huge especially 2021 fiscal year. I expect shopping online to be at all time high this coming holidays in the fall.
I saw you paused at the TMNt book. Lol I dont nothing of grading u did score some good books. You'll be fine. Hey what is pressing and do you already have a video on this process. Thanks for the GREAT content. Burn it right in there!
It’s a fun collection to find in the wild, but $4,500 is closer to a collector rather than retailer price. The time, effort and money involved here to make a return is going to be significant.
agree, i love finding big collections and this one is fun but i def dont think its the best flipping collection ive seen especially at that price. video was awesome i just remember thinking to myself while watching when he was explaining the math at the end "i like this collection but theres no way i'd undertake something like this, unless i really just wanted most of it for myself and sell a few things to lighten the blow"
Dude, don’t worry. You have auctions with a HUGE Inventory to back it ALL up. You’ll never run out of money man! Haha Don’t borrow trouble. Edit: Not to mention 400 people now watching on average. You are blessed🤣
There are a lot of books there.... i wouldn't say that's a great deal but definitely not an "overpay".... i love the acrylic stands! Where are those from? Thanks!
I think you're right in the ballpark. Dont think you overpaid. That Spider Men 1 book was perfect timing and probably makes the collection worth buying at that price. Good job bud
I think over the long term it will be a positive gain,im assuming most of the other books are fillers looking at that 2- 10 dollar range so it will be a slow grind since knowone puts in orders for fillers. Most of the keys you showed seem to be those 2nd tier but a few were up there depending on grade.Gary i hope you make it up tenfold ur one of the good guys.
I know you said you like to turn around and make your money back quickly, but some of those (Silk ones for sure) I would sit on for a little bit and see what Sony does with the character on the big screen.
Gary quick question. I have had bad luck with my local LCS. Always disappointed with either selection as in none..or condition. They put the raw books in plastic slots and people bend them over looking through them breaking spines etc. No Venom for me this week. Just wondering what the best place for me to maybe order new releases online. Thanks in advance.
I don’t think you overpaid at all, but like you said, it will take more time with this one to recoup your expenses. I would have paid that price too man. Great vid as always, Gary! Looking forward to seeing the prescreen one soon!
$4500 seems steep until you hear the story behind this collection, it was some collector who passed away makes you start to respect his picks, you'll definitely make double or triple your money back but like you said you gotta work for it, that 1st Carnage isn't going nowhere but to the top when they drop the Venom 2 movie
Before I watch your key pulls portion, I gotta say I think you got one heck of a deal. $4500 is a price that allows your profit margin to reflect the amount of time and effort you will put into these!
I don't think you overpaid at all, you'll definitely make a profit, but like you said, it might a little longer than is usual. Keep the videos coming! I'm looking into buying some collections here in NC and like seeing how you do it.
As someone new to collecting comics I appreciate you telling us what the books are worth. It can be a bit overwhelming with how many books there are
Love your videos! The mix between showing the books before, the keys, and how you take the time and discuss the costs! Great video
Great video as always! I love how real and honest you are. Stay happy and healthy
That Slabbed Star Wars 46 has skyrocketed!! First appearance of Boba Fett, Dengar, Bossk, etc
Hi Gary - thanks for taking us on these trips and for sharing the experience. The price, potential sales and anticipated profit analysis is great (love this format). Good luck with this collection and as always "keep it comics".
Honestly been waiting for an in depth with the costs associated to your collection purchases for so long. FINALLY thank you hahahaha
Good luck man. Everyone always thinks these things are a sure thing but thank you for being honest and shedding light that it's not as easy as it looks.
Great video! Love the inner workings of the struggle.
Awesome books buddy and awesome job

Great video Gary. These collection videos are killin it.
I just bought my first comic in 10 years, venom 26. Thank you Gary, your vids gave me motivation to start reading them again
Thank you. Wish I had the time to read more. Enjoy!

What’s up Gary?!? Super excited, checking out my first collection in the wild tomorrow! Wish me luck !
Good luck
Man gary, my first time in the wild and it was a bust...nothing but Blackhawk comics issue 200 and up...was a good experience though
This was a good find. You definitely did not over pay for this collection. You're the guru! Keep it comics good sir
It’s crazy to watch these older vids and see how much the values of these books has changed. DV 3 is so crazy now
I like that you give info on the books and the collection
Would love to have that bronze Silver Surfer! Good haul brother.
It'll be worth it in the long run for sure, and those minor keys will add up. thanks again for another awesome haul video!

Great information on this subject. I have juggling the idea myself. Can wait to see the follow up video!
Its already out
Can’t wait to see the video of the books you get back from CGC good luck!
That’s a huge haul man! Interested to see the unboxing video for these being sent off.

Thanks John!
One of the best collections I've seen in a long time. $4500 isn't an overpay. I'd say good deal. Books like Miles Morales ultimate spider-man 1 variant in a 9.8 are going to go for high prices. Congrats Gary!
Stop right there! Your wife actually helps you with your comics???!!! My wife barely TOLERATES my comic collection. You’re a very lucky man!
I'm starting to learn things...keep those videos coming Gary!
Looks like a nice buy. Looked like some solid stuff to haul around to shows.
That miles morales Spider-man 1 9.8 is $700+ alone really nice buy im sure with everything else. Really Like that Immortal Hulk 1 16 bit by Waite.
Interesting purchase. I like your plan the long play for return on investment. Look forward to seeing that cgc 20 out of 25 9.8 return.
Wow that collection had bits of everything in it that's awesome
I think it was a great deal
That ultimate spiderman 1, first Miles Variant is massive find now!
Great video as always! I think you'll be ok.
Thank you for sharing 🙏🏼👍🏼broke down what you paid. I appreciate that
Good video keep doing your thang
Money comes and money goes but the HUNT continues
Thanks for sharing the price I don't know how many "I just body collection" videos where they won't tell you what they paid.... as someone who wants to buy collections it's very valuable information.
Cool video, up here in french speaking Canada not too many comics yet alone collection can be found in the wild.
Love the video! I wish I had that many 😪
That Ultimate Spider-man Miles morales Variant Taxi cab 9.8 alone 1000$-1500$ and rapidly climbing.
Ul make good profit Gary. Good score.Best of luck in the grades!! 👌
im sure youll make ur money back and more, i got hope! Love videos like this

@Tom The Fish you sir are knowledgeable
Good investment collection will maybe take so time but will be rewarding in the long term
Good move, will be looking for the cgc video of the 25 coming back
Like how you've said how much you've paid, expectations and general thought process around what needs to happen next.
I LOVE those collection vids!! Keep them coming! I call 21 9.8! ;)
I saw you paused at the TMNt book. Lol I dont nothing of grading u did score some good books. You'll be fine. Hey what is pressing and do you already have a video on this process. Thanks for the GREAT content. Burn it right in there!

Damn, seems like a lot of work but might just be worth it. Good luck with it, Gary!
Dude, don’t worry. You have auctions with a HUGE Inventory to back it ALL up. You’ll never run out of money man! Haha Don’t borrow trouble.
Edit: Not to mention 400 people now watching on average. You are blessed🤣
You are my motivation to get my collection up to par big boy status ...
❤️Yes! Mel with the vehicle-swap-assist! ❤️💎
Awesome work mate
Ah the famous marker book from the auction lol. That ASM #4 Silk variant jumped after the auction. Not a bad collection in all.
Great video as always sir. I think the price was a bit high for you to have a good profit margin but I feel you’ll make money on this one.
Holy shit $4,000. My boy Gary is Ballin. 🤘
You did good Gary. Not all buys are homeruns but with time and patience you’ll make some good money off this
There are a lot of books there.... i wouldn't say that's a great deal but definitely not an "overpay".... i love the acrylic stands! Where are those from?
Thanks!
Bcw
Solid collection - those ASM 4's look familiar! haha
Some of those look familiar to the auction 😁😁
Don’t forget those BCW boxes used for for min $20 a pop so you got some scratch back right there
I think you're right in the ballpark. Dont think you overpaid. That Spider Men 1 book was perfect timing and probably makes the collection worth buying at that price. Good job bud
Some of those books look familiar like they were in an auction or something
I think over the long term it will be a positive gain,im assuming most of the other books are fillers looking at that 2- 10 dollar range so it will be a slow grind since knowone puts in orders for fillers. Most of the keys you showed seem to be those 2nd tier but a few were up there depending on grade.Gary i hope you make it up tenfold ur one of the good guys.
You will get your money back. It will take a while but you are capable of doing a very good profit. Congrats Sir!
Looks like you had fun doing it.
I know you said you like to turn around and make your money back quickly, but some of those (Silk ones for sure) I would sit on for a little bit and see what Sony does with the character on the big screen.
Great video and pretty good collection. You’ll make a profit but it will take time and some work. Thx.
Did your buddy go in on the collection?... If so how do you split it?
Great video... keep it going
I have both of the books u had up on the table last did u happen the know the price on them?
Not sure.
Good luck on the 20 out of 25 Gary

The plastic boxes are $500 if you sold them.
True
Yep they are pricey
Yea I just bought 2 last week they’re between 25 and 30 on amazon right now
Before I watch your key pulls portion, I gotta say I think you got one heck of a deal. $4500 is a price that allows your profit margin to reflect the amount of time and effort you will put into these!
I never understood the point of slabbing comics. They were made to be read: why seal them in plastic cases?
Protects them. Also gives them a definitive value.
Also the option of witnessed artwork or signatures. Don’t worry. No one will force you to slab a book.
High grade book for investment. Lower grade books to read.
You hit it on the head...ill get my money plus some back but how long will it take? As a reseller of other things, I know exactly what you're saying.
Better than the collections I've looked at here locally.
Nice finds.
Show us how you clean and press the comics
You can get almost 20% of your money back for the slabbed Walking Dead 1
What do you do with all the cheap not key issues leftover from these collections?
I bulk them out
I think you'll get your money... some of those slabs might be worth busting, clean/press and re-submit.
I don't think you overpaid at all, you'll definitely make a profit, but like you said, it might a little longer than is usual. Keep the videos coming! I'm looking into buying some collections here in NC and like seeing how you do it.
