    Exactly what I got on youtube looking for. Same cheap lights from amazon but ours dont have the LED covers like yours. Since LEDs do no let off heat I put these lights behind a HotRod car picture frame in my son's room. He uses it as a night light and ALWAYS forgets to turn it off. (he never puts it in auto-off mode) This is really going to help!! Thanks for putting this up!!

    Good video. One tip....if you have an Android style cable, use it instead. They are a dime a dozen. I hate using my precious iphone cable. Also, just two wires in the android charger. Red and black. Real simple. I converted a 3 volt supply (2 double A's) to this 5 volt system, and it worked great. And a plus is that the bulbs are 2 volts brighter. lol. Good video.

    To add another dimension, could I add the lower voltage fairy light string to a 12V AC circuit (that powers 12V UV SMD LED light string) if I also added a buck converter (or voltage limiter of some type) to have a seperate light inside an eternity mirror? Ie., I am making an eternity mirror as a gift and just can't figure out how to use the fairy lights for the detail at the center of the mirror without blowing every LED. There are no variables to the fairy lights - there is only a resistor in the battery box since it is a simple on/off controller - and I have an inline buck converter that drops voltage to 5V. The wall adapter is a 5-12V AC to DC source, but I know from experience that the adapter is not a regulator, and having 2 power sources is not gonna be aesthetically pleasing.
    Any ideas or am I on the right track?
    Thanks again! I am planning to do just what you describe for a other lighted gift now!!!

    Two years late lol but will this work with any light device that’s 5V? I bought my brother a blue LED lightning bolt thing for his desk, but I didn’t know it required 3AA batteries. The thing dies every third day as he just leaves it on.
    It’s only going to be used as a desk ornament, so we don’t need the portability. If I use the same iPhone wire and phone block adapter as you used, will I need any additional resistors/capacitors?

    • @dougdavis2523

      I agree! I'd been thinking to do it I'd have to figure out how to work with resistors, or something, to lower the power from the outlet to whatever the light string needs. I guess it's still dependent on finding a light string that needs right around 5 volts, but that's hopefully not too hard.

    Got a quick questions. My wife has 3 candles on the mantel above the fireplace all 3 take 3 AA batteries. I'm tired of buying batteries, what would be the best option to convert these with the lease amount of wires running everywere?
    Can I hook up a 12 volt power supply and tee off to all three of the candles? Will be short 1.5 Volts but will it work? If I only hooked up 2 candles I will only need 9 volts will a 12 volt power supply push to much beings there is 4 volts left?

    I have 2 battery powered LED lights. They have 3 leds and a small motor, running off 3 AA (4.5V in total) batteries. If I were to wire both of these up to the same power source, would I need anything besides the 9V AC adapter? Would I need to add a resistor or are there resistors inside AC adapters? I'm new to this, so please forgive my rookie questions.

      The connection would be the same.
      Your just need an adjustable power adapter that has an input of 110V (if US) or 220V (if Europe) and an output of 1.5V (for single battery) or 3V (for 2 batterries).
      Here is an example of such a power adapter.

      “Series” would drop the voltage to far.
      It would need to be in parallel so each string would see the 5 volts and make sure you don’t draw more current than you USB power supply can give. Most USB power supply’s can do 1 amp some can even do 2.4 (iPad chargers)

    Dear DIY Creator, need some help. I tried something similar. I had a night light sensor with three AAA 1.5 batteries. I used a mobile charger (about 5v) which takes type A USB which connects to the charger while I cut the other end C usb. Found the live and neutral (in my case Red and Black as white and green were data) and soldered them to a common connection on the night light. BUT what happened is that the LEDs light alright but they do not go off. I tried the batteries again without the charger and worked OK. Can you tell me what I did wrong. According to the multimeter the reading was 4.9V. Any help pls?

    • @tonypantoja
      @tonypantoja 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My guess is you somehow bypassed the sensor portion of the light. The sensor is supposed to act like a switch, turning the lights on (supplying power) only when needed, but you seem to be supplying power all the time. So you probably just connected the hot wire at the wrong location.

    I want to do the same thing to a Puck Light that is operated buy 3 AAA batteries. How do I know what voltage of phone charger USB I need?

    • @norcalkid2776
      @norcalkid2776 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Each AAA battery is 1.5V, so 3 AAA batteries would provide 4.5V (3 x 1.5 = 4.5). All USB charging adapters provide 5Vdc, but their output current can vary between 500mA (0.5A) to 3.0A. If your puck light has LEDs, then even the older 500mA chargers will be OK to use.
      Most newer chargers have the higher current capability. They all should have a label indicating 5Vdc output and also their current.

    • @justingosselin3661
      @justingosselin3661 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. What's coming out of your christmas light plug is 110v AC. You need the usb charger to convert from 110vAC to 5vDC. Connecting the 110vAC directly will at least cause smoke or damage to the components.

    Aren’t you afraid of the higher Amper produced by the charger than by the batteries? Will it not harm the led?

    • @laurentjouvin
      @laurentjouvin ปีที่แล้ว

      Amps are drawn, not pushed. So as long as you have more than 1 amp, you should be fine. In fact, the power supply could be rated at 50 amps and you would be fine, too.

    • @iamgiatho
      @iamgiatho 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't do this with a 5v phone charger. It would lessen the output to each set of lights, the more you added... each set of lights needs at least 2 AA batteries (3v)... maybe a 12v cable would work for eg. 4-5 light sets that'd usually require 2 AA batteries OR for 3 light sets that'd require 3 AA's 👍
      Also, I would test which wires are pos & neg in all of them before soldering anything (not solder as you go) coz testing a neg on a pos bunch may short circut the lot already soldered on 😬
