We got our egg dispensers earlier this year and found out they are more entertaining than most other animals! They run to greet us and think a jug of water poured into a dog bowl is a treat even though they already have water. Lol

OMG You are so right about them being entertaining! We got our chickens in May and within two months we set a couple of lawn chairs in front of the coop. They’re hilarious 😂. They come running at us like a herd of mini dinosaurs and follow us around the property. They love my husbands shop so he’s always shoo-ing them out. They’re def fun to watch. 😊
Have you tried to "paralyze" your chickens yet? It's hilarious! You lay your chicken on its side, take a piece of chalk and draw a line on the concrete in front of it then let the chicken go. 9 out of 10 times they stay laying down until you nudge them.
As a new bride my sister gave me some hens. I was self teaching several versions soup. One day I had a huge pot of black beans going and I was c rummaging around in the cupboard and came across baby oysters. Yep I added then my black beans (barf) ok not a good idea. I haulled that junk out the the chickens. It was a cold grey day (a hoar frost day) the chicken went nuts. Singing happy songs that hens tend to do. Happy hens that day and I never put baby oysters in soup again....
It took me about four years to talk Hubs into letting me get our first hens as day old chicks. He has always been a city boy and is (at the least) uncomfortable around anything but dogs and cats. Once the girls were about three months old he was hooked. He was the one who first named a bird. In the years since then he has relentlessly spoiled every chicken we've had. Every time I retire our old flock and start with new chicks, at least one of the new girls must look like his first favorite (a solid white leghorn hybrid he named April) and assume the same name. He's still not big on holding them, but he feeds special treats daily and talks to them in his sweetest tones. (Yes, I mean he talks "baby talk" to them.) He has spent a solid amount of money and expended a great deal of effort (even literal sweat and blood) to make sure these birds live in healthy and comfortable surroundings, protected from all predators. He was very conscientious about training our dogs to protect and not hassle the girls. He helps me care for them when asked, and is always alerting me if one "doesn't look right". I honestly think he'd object if one day I said "I'm tired of the chickens. Let's get rid of them."
Today was the biennial "Big Girls' Coop" clean-out, since we also use the deep litter method. He hauled seven barrows of litter and poop to the compost pile, helped me dig out the areas that got wet during our torrential downpour last night. He washed feeders and waterers, scraped roosts, and helped me scrub and hose it all out. Once I had finished spraying out the building with Oxine and it was dry again, he hauled four big bales of shavings for me to spread out, and helped me reposition the nest boxes. Between tasks he was treating the girls and making sure they were comfortable in their temporary enclosure.
Just be forewarned: Chickens are considered the gateway drug of livestock. They also spread a disorder that is called "chicken math". You might not think a chicken would be smart enough to steal your heart, but they not only can do so, they can break it too. Chickens are smart enough to have invented their own sport called "chicken football", which is often played with a dead (or nearly dead) mouse/large bug/lizard/huge worm. Frankly, I don't remember how to garden without chickens, so they might also cause a form of amnesia.

I lime my eggs and they are great! I raise honey bees and use raw honey for burns as well. I also buy whole grains with black oil sunflower seed and soak the feed and it last a lot longer. I raise my dog with baby chicks. I tell her they are puppies and she now protects them. Love you channel. Thumbs up!!!!!!!!!!
Free range the girls,, never have to rake leaves again. The girls will scratch thru the leaves all winter. When they poop on the deck just ignore it for a few days till it sets up then give it a kick with your boot. My daughters and I would visit the neighbor farmers and leave a dozen eggs. During harvest the farmers would leave me seed bags with corn and gravel for the chickens . Chickens can digest whole kernel corn but soaking with water makes corn go farther. To protect the girls run a hot wire 6 inches up around the coup ( highly recommend) it won’t hurt the chickens if they do get shocked.
Like how you described getting your dogs to be respect the chickens. We got our two GS dogs almost a year after we started raising chickens. The dogs were about 7 months old. The female made it her intense focus to lunge at the chicken enclosure while I was hustling to reinforce it, because I was afraid the dogs would eat them. Ah..nah! I woke up one day to find my rooster & one of the hens had somehow escaped the enclosure and availed themselves to our back patio (where I kept the feed). The dogs calmly reclined in the sun, occasionally opening an eyeball to see what was clucking nearby. Amazing! So I experimented, allowing the male dog (who didn't seem interested in the hens) into the yard where I'd built the enclosure. He simply ran around sniffing and frantically digging when he seemed to find something really interesting. The female paced back and forth, outside the chicken yard, whimpering. So I let her in to see what she'd do. The are quick to obey when we tell them "NO!," so I was a little less fearful at this poiint. Sure enough...what they wanted was the MICE! Dozens of mice running out of the enclosure as the dogs dug & chased. I was floored! Funny thing too: The rooster saw what was happening and rushed back into the yard to catch some. It was at that point that the hens finally realized that they could actually EAT mice. They hadn't bothered before & I was frustrated trying to keep them out so they wouldn't pollute the feed. Thank you dogs! When we decided to tear down the small coop to build a big one I upended a nest of mice inside the coop & the adults scattered over my feet while the babies were too small to run. The chickens went wild! I scooped up the baby mice & dropped some inside the enclosure for the hens to feast on. Nice! Now for the squirrels! They're a little more evasive!

I have the same sign on my coop "Fluffy butt hut". I had to work w/ my pups too but now, the chicks follow the pups around the yard like they are besties. I Also named my hens too. My wife and I named them after all the main characters on Steel Magnolias; Truvy, Annell, Ouisa, Clairee, M'lynn, & Shelby. We have one named Little Miss & she's special because she almost didn't make it. We had to take special care w/ her when we first got her as a chick. Love the channel, keep up the good work.

The sooner you get cold water or anything that can quickly cool your burn area the less damage you get.
I once heard sizzling after running my hand over a hot oven surface (thinking it was cool) and immediately ran cold water over it and then rubbed it with some ice.
It was as almost as if the burn never happened since there was no blistering or pain.

Water glass years ago was sodium silicate and in a ceramic jar the eggs can last forever. I have heard of 40 year old eggs stored this way being the same as when they were first put under the liquid.
I heard that you can use mineral oil to coat eggs for longer storage. I bought a freeze dryer and was putting up 72 eggs per batch. My wife thought i was crazy until the egg shortage hit. I can eat 6 eggs a day for about 1.5 years.

I was in Walmart in Texas today they were overloaded they had so much stuff on the shelves I could’ve bought anything in fact I had a list and there were several choices in every category of what I wanted to buy so it’s amazing nothing is happening except answers to prayer I have prayed and prayed and prayed for this nation that we would not suffer starvation and it doesn’t look like we are going to so let’s all thank God for his mercy his loving kindness his graciousness to those who love him and call on his name thank you Jesus you’re awesome

I have 2-greenstalk vertical planters and 3-Apartment chickens. Thought about Quail and chicken banty breeds, but found the larger breeds were calmer and not freaked by having diapers. 😊
I do have a TINY garden plot (16'x16') that I take them into everyday with me. Their world is pretty good and they are healthy.

We sell free range organic fed eggs here in Wisconsin and it’s illegal for you to sell them unless they are washed. We keep some washed and some not and give people the option, but that’s just skirting the law a touch.
It's amazing how the people who make the rules don't understand what they're doing. You aren't allowed to sell raw milk in Georgia so they put a label that says not for human consumption on the jug.
An Amish family up the road took the state to court a few years ago over that kinda crap after they were shutdown and actually won. Now they sell to people under the guise of a CSA to skirt around the legal BS that makes no sense to begin with.

Fun fact about eggs:
If you eat the yolk, the human body is able to utilize around 50% of the protein without turning it into sugar. Steak is only around 27%. The only protein more bio available than eggs is human breast milk, which the body is able to use around 55% of the protein.
The wood chips work because they're high in carbon, while the chicken manure is very high in nitrogen. Get the proper carbon to nitrogen ratio, and you have a healthy, not stinky, compost.
Great idea, not sure why I never thought of turning the coop/run into a compost pile itself.

Chickens stop laying in winter because they need more protein when it's cold.
I add some kitten food to the feed in winter. Get about a half dozen a day in January with 15 hens.
I have a Dorking hen that is 8 years old and she is still an amazing layer!! I wish they were more popular. She hatches and raises at least one clutch a year. My hen came from a place called Sand Hill Preservation. I HIGHLY recommend Dorkings!
Our favorites are Araucanas. I saw at least one of yours was that breed. They're hearty, good layers, decent meat, and good runners which helps them get away from trouble.
For the uninitiated, you don't need a rooster if you don't want baby chickens, the ladies will still lay without a rooster. We get that question all the time.
Our policy is to name any food animals after food. We've had chickens named pork chop, salt, pepper, steak, etc.

That is precisely what I did to all the free farm eggs my inlaws brought over. sure is handy, no refrigeration needed, and when no fresh eggs, just open a bag and in the jar they go. Freeze dryer is a wonderful investment.

We opted for ducks. Loved the info on how to test eggs, as we free range our ducks and some really like to hide their egg laying all over the acreage....but eventually we find the nests from watching over days. But love having fresh free range (orange yolk-not pale yellow) very tasty eggs...worth the feed and time. And its pretty neat seeing ducks dig around and explore the acreage and small pond we dug for them. Gives you a sense of normalcy in a world of chaos. You can also have them lay consistently year round if you manage the day light hrs they get by adding an auxillary timed led light to get to the 14hr daylight during winter.
My sister just started raising ducks for eggs as well.
Isn't yellow actually a sign of a healthy egg? At least all organic eggs I ever bought do have yellow yolk while all the factory farmed eggs have orange yolks. In German egg yolk even literally translates to "egg yellow" (Eigelb).
Actually it depends on what they are fed. Here in Canada, the non-free run grocery store eggs are very pale yellow and almost tasteless.and they are fed soy which is not great for egg quality The more greens (true free run) they get to browse on the more the eggs become intense yellow to almost orange.
@@TheMikeSpike Sorry, I actually meant intense yellow. I have never seen pale yellow yolks though but I live in Germany so I don't know if the chickens here receive different food than in Canada.

I just found your channel.and sub'd after watching a couple of videos. I've raised chickens for a few years and your videos are the most clear, accurate and straight to the point I've seen
I absolutely Love how funny your videos are while at the same time being So chocked full of important information. The opening scene laughing so hard I incorrectly swallowed some wasabi, then I was crying. I am currently running my incubator to increase my chicken flock. I've spent years trying to sell my chicken eggs and no one was interested, now Everyone is asking to buy. I have preserved them all summer in my freeze dryer but I think I want to try water glassing some, just for the experience.

My northern Michigan friend said its quicker and a tid bit cheaper to buy chicks at $.60 per but with inflation, renting a FOGHORN LEGHORN may be the new old way..again.

He had a huge coop and let them free range during the day. Always had so many eggs. Ate them so many ways. Breakfast lunch and dinner. I never get tiered of fresh eggs. Hi Haxman, I have read the reason why eggs float when there bad is. The eggs have a small empty sack that when there first produced is a vacuum. Then as the days go by the vacuum is replaced with air and the air floats when placed in water.

Love my chickens! I ended up with 2 roosters when I bought my baby pullets last year, so I bought an incubator this year & hatched my own. Fun & easy! Also, on the salmonella thing, I've never had a problem. I eat raw cookie dough all the time (I just can't stop myself). I haven't freeze dried any raw eggs yet, but I did freeze dry scrambled eggs with wild harvested morel mushrooms & they turned out awesome. Definitely planning on doing a couple of big batches of raw before the girls stop laying regular for the winter
I just moved earlier this year and didn't really have time to setup a coop like I wanted. I am hoping I have enough time to get a proper flock going early next year thanks for the video!

@Johnny Bravo I hope so. My lot is odd shaped… like an L with the house located at the 90 deg. along an alley. This will require my placing the coop in what appears to be a front yard facing a street no matter where I put it! I will need to make it as private and lovely as possible for my neighbors to be accepting. Good times but still a fun challenge!

Around 100 years ago they used to preserve eggs and somebody figured out the preservative would be great in the middle of car windshields for safety glass

You should look into the "magic seal". Vacuum sealer. I have a harvest right, and the magic seal. I drop a 300cc oxygen absorber into every bag. And that thing can vacuum seal a 7 mil mylar bag with no modifications needed.

How do we clean the dirt or poo off the eggs without risking we washed off the bloom? We don’t have our own chickens yet. We get them from a neighbor and they often have straw or poo and dirt on them etc. And I want to water glass some. Thanks for any help
If they have a clean place to lay them it should be rare that they are dirty. Of course it will happen sometimes. Just dry wipe them and then wash them right before using.
My chickens sleep and poo in their nesting boxes. They havent begun to lay but not sure how to get them to stop crapping in their nesting boxes
@@onemoredoll5791 don't let chickens sleep in the nesting box and they won't poo in the nesting box. My Chickies are *Litter Box Trained* I have 5 Chickies they have a room in my house and they picked their *Nesting Corner* 🥰 they are Posh Pampered Chickies but they are happy

Very accurate. Note the best way to insure your hens roost where you want and not in your car is to put a light in the coop this also eliminates easter egg hunts. Thanks for the great entertainment and the best information withiut the doom and gloom. Shelf life is longer if the eggs are not fertilized.

I'm guessing that where I am the neighbors, among others, might frown on chickens and it's probably guaranteed that a rooster would be VERBOTEN!! I will be checking into farm eggs though as there's some farming not too far away.... although the cost of gas might make that problematic. But great video!! Just don't get a rooster and use woodchips as Hax said, then no noise or smell, if no noise or smell the neighbors can't complain. Plus seems if you told your neighbors first and offered them eggs they might be down for that. A few chickens can supply a small family no problem if good layers, you'd have alot of extra eggs to share with your neighbors to keep them happy.

Attention: I am in my 70’s and we after 24 hours wash and coat our eggs with food grade mineral oil then put in the refrigerator of no lower than 36* they will be good for 8 to 9 months! Don’t trust me check it out yourself

I’ve used egg whites on burn’s before and it really does work! No blisters and in minutes the pain is gone.
We used to raise chickens but eggs WERE cheap and the raccoons got a liking for chickens. We are getting chickens again so we don't have to pay $8 for a dozen Biden eggs.

i have a flock of 12 chickens, first yr raising...i just love having them..i free range mine during the day and they have free access to the food in the coop at will...we secure them at night..i love having them...they dont even really bother my garden except maybe to steal a few low hanging cherry tomatoes which im fine with...

I gotta say green chef is really yummy. My friend gave me some and they were all great. Really good flavours. I liked that they give you lots of whole ingredients, it’s basically like they shopped for you. So just know you have to chop and use different pans etc, it’s not just done but that’s why it tastes so amazing and fresh.
My Dad ,who lives in Baltimore County Maryland mind you, buys fresh farm eggs that still have poop and straw on them a bit ;-) They are so delicious!! They have double yolk too.

I concur about the dogs and chickens together. I have a fairly driven and very experienced bird dog golden retriever, took several months but they are perfectly happy together now.
I invested in a herd of 3 buffalo. We are now at 7. They weight like 1500 pounds each. One should keep my family fed for a year.
