What is a First Degree Heart Block?
First Degree Heart Block is the mildest form of heart block. In this condition, the electrical signal that travels from the atria to the ventricles, through the AV Bundle is delayed, resulting in a prolonged PR interval. A normal PR interval is between 0.12 to 0.20 seconds, but in First Degree Heart Block, the PR interval is longer than 0.20 seconds.
Causes of First Degree Heart Block:
First Degree Heart Block can be caused by several factors such as medication, electrolyte imbalance, or myocardial ischemia. In some cases, it can also be congenital. In most other cases, this could be a normal finding in healthy individuals, such as athletes or active and fit individuals.
Symptoms of First Degree Heart Block:
In most cases, First Degree Heart Block does not cause any symptoms, and the condition is often found incidentally during routine EKG screening. However, in some cases, patients may experience symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, or shortness of breath.
Treatment of First Degree Heart Block:
