The Danger of Participation Trophies | Jennifer Alessandra | TEDxMemphis

  • Growing up as an athlete, for Jennifer winning and losing were well defined and understood concepts. The desire to win drove behaviors: goal setting, hard work and resilience. Lessons learned on the field were instructive in all areas of life. Imagine her surprise when her son started playing youth soccer and got a trophy for simply participating. She started seeing the unintended outcomes of handing out participation trophies, and what happens when we try to protect people from failure. At work, at home, EVERYWHERE! In her talk, Jennifer explores three ways to combat the participation trophy phenomenon and how to make the techniques stick. Jennifer joined Frontdoor, Inc. in 2019 as senior vice president and chief people officer. Alessandra has significant depth and breadth of experience as a performance-driven leader in public and private companies, and an impressive track record for helping businesses and employees navigate change. Prior to Frontdoor, Alessandra served as chief people officer for SolarWinds where she led teams in 16 countries and was a key member of the mergers and acquisitions team. Passionate about giving back to the community, Alessandra has been a board member and advisor at non-profit organizations including Homeboy Industries and the Central Texas Food Bank.
    Alessandra is a graduate of the University of Southern California, where she earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees. She was a collegiate athlete and part of USC's National Championship swimming and diving team in 1997. Jennifer proudly answers to the titles wife, mom, dog lover, traveler and competitor (in almost anything). This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    The issue is that by creating a false sense of achievement, you give them the idea that winning isn’t important and that participating is all that matters. Reality is that anyone can really participate, but not many can win, and we want to motivate each other to work harder in order to achieve greater things than everyone else. That’s why not everyone who participates wins, because winning requires dedication and determination, which most participants don’t have enough of, and when kids lose and see other kids winning instead of them, they want to win as well. Losing is the most effective form of motivation.

    • @gabeh1839
      @gabeh1839 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I disagree, you need motivation to participate in the first place, for some people the thought of winning or achieving something stops them from participating at all because of it seeming impossible or for other reasons. I think being rewarded for losing and being rewarded for participation are two seperate issues, everyone should be rewarded for participating but only winners should be rewarded for winning. Participation is a lesson in it's own right, an important one.

    I remember of that wrestling video of a junior HS kid who lost and started throwing a fit. This is the type of people who never learned the value of losing and the parents including his brother who went up to that referee to say it was unfair match. This is why we have Donald J. P-trophies are fine!!! There's no "danger". The p-trophies are for the parents, not the kids. I was a youth soccer coach and the kids either threw away their p-trophies or just tossed them aside and mocked the fact that they got a trophy for losing. They cared more about the pizza party anyway. Meaningless to them. The ones who felt so great about their p-trophies were utter losers anyway and well before they got their p-trophies.

    • @Reviourt

    I agree with this but there’s a huge flaw in these arguments that nobody seems to point out. You can focus on trying to win but you need to establish HOW to win. Not just talk about kids winning. In school they don’t teach students how to think or control their work ethic. And yet adults and teachers like to complain about kids even when they are TRYING. Remember that everybody’s got limited capacities and everybody has different capacities so don’t expect everyone to have the same results. That in its own sense is a form of entitlement. And the speaker is not necessarily being objective.

    • @justanothernick3984

      Even in competing, you need to keep the other competitors motivated. And life isn't merely competition. It's also cooperation.
      A social safety net is a bit like a participation trophy. Because not everything is about winning. Yes, winning in itself is a reward. As is sometimes being able to play. It doesn't always seem that way but think about it.
      Achievement is something you should feel, not some idol on a bookshelf. It can serve as a reminder but I don't accept this mindset she goes into this topic with as a valid one. Like mentioned, it's an entitlement in itself.
      Hope that makes some sense.

    • @olivergreen1520
      @olivergreen1520 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@justanothernick3984 that’s the thing about competitions too. Winning may be the goal but there is no guarantee anyone will win and ultimately there is only 1 winner in every game. Not 10 different winners. Participation trophies don’t work because they make everyone feel entitled and equal on the playing field when that’s just not the reality of competition. However I do think participation trophies might work for people with disabilities or lower skilled competitors that can help motivate them to persevere and make them feel confident that they at least tried. Otherwise majority of the world has to work their way up the ladder in whatever they do to win and succeed.

    If you show up, and you’re willing to try, and you know you’re going to lose, but you still participate, then you deserve a trophy. People who play even though they are going to lose, are valuable, because they still participate. Life is not about winning, it’s about participating.

    • @bellalegendre2644
      @bellalegendre2644 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      True but the problem with participation trophies, as as well as the participation trophy mentality, is that it can breed entitlement. Which is a learned behavior. You have some people out here who feel entitled to receive something just for participating or evening showing up. And there's a difference between those two things. Just because someone showed up doesn't mean they actually participated or put in enough effort to try to win. But that's just my opinion.

    • @TheodoraKimmelHello
      @TheodoraKimmelHello 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bellalegendre2644 i think you’re talking about someone who isn’t there to have fun, become a better contester, or is only there to win in some other way. You can’t win if you don’t show up, you don’t try, and you don’t give yourself a reward/feel rewarded even if you lose. Not giving up deserves a reward, as well as defining success by willingness. People who feel entitled to a stinking trophy shouldn’t even be there.
