Don't be rude and feel entitled just because you're a foreigner; don't think that the friendliness of Filipinos is because they are treating themselves lower than you or they are treating you special. It is just how Filipinos treat their visitors, and you as a foreigner is a visitor to their country; hence, you got the same treatment as their local visitors, friends, and family; so don't misinterpret it; it is just part of their culture.

I will have the most unpopular comment on this post but I do not 100% agree of what he said on ‘trying to prove themselves to the world’ it’s almost akin to validation-seeking behavior or global validation-seeking. Lotsa overnight TH-camrs have been taking advantage of this and a lot of folks back home are being oblivious to it. I was candidly confronted at work why do Filipinos think that it’s always about themselves. That struck me and that workmate is almost right. Don’t get them wrong. I work in a very positive work environment. Most of them are Hispanic. The Salvadorans and Cubans are proud of their heritage but not a trace of validation-seeking. They’ll showcase when asked but never unsolicited. Just continue to be hospitable, friendly and kind for what you truly are not only to foreigners to prove or to validate something but also towards each other.

It seems you did not understand the topic. The guy is off topic. The question is things foreigners should never do in the Philippines. The interviewees failed in their answers to the question. Things foreigners should not do is talk badly of politicians, do not disrespect the religion, not belittling filipinos, do not public shame filipinos, do not hurt their pride, never goes naked on a beach nor have sex on a beach. That is all i can think of. Enjoy the Philippines if you are coming.

You do know what happens when foreigners say something bad about the Philippines or filipinos, the entire country will be up in arms against that foreigner. ex. Claire Danes, Lee Da Hae, Lucy Liu, taylor Kitsch, the girl who said she'd rather starve than eat filipino food, etc., etc.. foreigners can do - po/opo, salamat po, kuya/ate. that makes a big difference

  • @paxxop

    1. Don't try to make jokes - sense of humour is completely different and you can easily offend someone with a remark that you think is funny but is taken literally. Example: while in hospital, when the nurse asked how I was, a couple of times I said, in what I thought was a joking tone and with body language that in the west would have clearly indicated that I was being light-hearted, "sick enough to be in hospital", thinking I was lightening the mood. My Filipino friend told me later that the nurses thought I was calling them stupid.
    2. Take off shoes at the door. Some homes you switch to inside slippers, others you might go around in socks or bare feet, but never wear your outside footwear inside. And don't take off your shoes/sandals/flip flops outside. Apart from the broken glass in many places, your feet will be seen as "dirty" even if they're not. I think this is a widespread Asian thing - I once had a Malaysian roommate who told me this same thing.
    3. Don't put toilet paper down the toilet. In many places, even in big cities, it will clog the pipes. So use the bidet (pressure hose) to clean up, use a little tp to dry yourself and then put it in the trash can that's always there.
    4. Filipinos take cleanliness very seriously. Never skimp on the deodorant.
    5. Don't put a Filipino in a position where they can't refuse. Understand that they find it hard to give a clear "no". Outright refusal is held to be rude and they're too polite for that. If you hear "maybe" or "another time" or other such vague replies understand this as a polite refusal and don't push too hard.
    6. Don't expect to use your credit/debit card everywhere. It might be accepted in some hotels and big stores/malls in the larger cities but most places prefer (and may only take) cash. In case they can't change a big bill you should make sure to carry lots of 20, 50 and 100 peso notes. Also don't expect the ATM's to always work. They might be out of order, or simply out of cash (especially on pay day in a remote town). So you might consider making sure you always have an extra "reserve" of cash for emergencies.
    7. Don't complain how long things are taking. Be patient. Life moves to a different rhythm.
    8. As other comments note, don't talk politics. You're a visitor (and always will be - it's very hard for non-Pinoys to get citizenship, even though you can stay for decades on the right visa). Public political action (such as turning up to a street rally) could even get you deported/blacklisted, meaning you'll not be allowed in again.
    9. Don't overstay your visa - or if you do (e.g. due to some emergency preventing you from renewing it on time), fix it as soon as you possibly can. If you wait too long, getting caught could lead to deportation and blacklisting.
    10. If you need to visit a government office (e.g. extending your visa) observe the dress code (usually closed-in shoes & long pants for men, you get the idea). People get turned away wearing flip flops and sandos.
    11. Don't drive unless you can handle totally crazy roads. The cities are like many other Asian cities, legendary levels of congestion, dangerous driving, etc. Even in a quiet province with little actual traffic roads can be slow and stressful with hazards like sleeping dogs, pedestrians and stopped vehicles around any bend (and there's lots of bends). A 50km (30 mile) journey might take 2 hours.
    12. While we're talking about road safety, don't expect your motorbike/trike driver to offer you a helmet. They may not have one for themselves either. If you want one, make sure to have your own.
    13. Don't rag on religion. Many take it quite seriously.
    14. Don't leave home without ear plugs. It's noisy. Crowds, roosters, dogs, traffic, you name it.
    15. Don't brag. It's considered rude. Especially for us whites, they already know we have considerable advantages in life. Don't rub it in.
    16. Don't ignore or flout the rules/laws. Even though it may not seem so to a Western eye, it's an orderly society with a fairly strong respect for the rule of law. Expect people, and especially government officials, to do things by the book.
    17. Don't neglect to book your return (or onward) ticket in advance. You won't be allowed in. They like tourists but they also tend to stick to the rules (did I already mention that?). Also don't forget to do your eTravel declaration during the 72 hours prior to arrival, and again before departure.
    18. Don't expect to get as much done in a day as you would back home (unless you come from another slow-paced country). Even if there's no sudden problems things just move more slowly. Maybe it's the heat.
    19. Don't expect all locals to speak English. While many understand at least some, they may be reluctant to speak if they haven't used it since school. This is particularly so outside the big cities.

anywho, a little anecdote, months ago my friend told me bout this KOREAN who have the audacity to just start rambling in korean asking for what it seems to be the direction of a farmstead. my friend recall her being like okay.. chill.. this dude needs help filos will help him, that's what they do, hospitality they say. but the thing is, it was really hard to understand him and for some reason he didn't took the time to use Google translator or something to atleast ease the situation! okay fine, whatever still helping, maybe its his signal we're in a remote provincial area afterall.. but guess what! the dude, seeing how our filos were having a hard time understanding him, STRAIGHT UP MAKE A VERY ANNOYED FACE AND SHRIEK OUT WHAT MY FRIEND DESCRIBED MUST BE A KOREAN CUZZ TOWARDS THEM.
lemme tell u it gets dirty, the fact that he did that is one thing but to do that on the faces of a bunch of girls and ladies is another one especially since filo dudes can be extra protective. filo men who heard it flocked on the dude and just get back to him, screaming, ready to jump him. Fortunately for him he was quick enough to pop in his car and drove off.
so yeah, lesson is foreign pips don't be an ass like this dude and you'll be just fine.

I haven’t booked my flight yet, I’m way i’m watching a few videos and I’m using voice text so it may be incorrect and I just saw it said way, but I enjoy your videos. I’ll travel solo as well and I watch Patty Doyle. Imagine you know him a TH-camr I’m gonna be doing a similar type of thing just like you younger he’s not quite as old as I am, I am just about to book my trip and I’m calling. I’m actually gonna call the experience and ask them to make sure which trip I would like to go on. It’s gonna be the six day trip and I’m curious of your opinions whether I should go from Alito to Kan, is that it or Alito, your opinion because I have to book my trip around that after I get to there and do the boat trip do I want to end up on Alito and enjoy that for several days or do I want to go the other way your opinions on that please and I’m about to call them because I’m in the United States it is 10:52 PM and I know it’s either 1052 1252 or 952. I don’t know if it’s 12 hours difference or not but I’m curious of your opinions as a solo traveler as to which place I should start from and where I should end up because I’ll do either. I really don’t care that’s the only plan of God is to just go and I’m gonna book my flight based on that and I’m making the plans tonight and I’m leaving next Wednesday just to go so curious which way I should go and I’m gonna ask the lost boys. I believe they’re called as well and I’m about to make a phone call to them so if you happen to see this, I would like your opinion and it’s great that you’re from the Netherlands because last year I went to Vietnam and I’m at my friend Oliver from the Netherlands in Vietnam on the way to an overnight bus. We are lifelong friends and I’m doing this by voice text so please understand if it has some incorrect text but I’m at Oliver on the way to and the Zhang loop in Vietnam. I imagine you may have been there and he said well shoot I’ll go as well and he did and I met Marzuk and Sylvia from Poland, and we’re all Facebook friends and lifelong friends but from Netherlands just travels as nonchalantly as I do and goes places and he really didn’t care it sound like something fun and I’m curious as your opinions of which way I should go Elito to the other Allen things or the other way, your opinions and that’s there now so you should be awake and I don’t know how you check your page, but I travel because I don’t go to go anywhere on travel for travel site the greater to move and that’s tattooed on me for my part not to go anywhere. I travel travel sake the great move so I enjoy your channel greatly. I just found you today as I miss followed Doyle and I’m older than both of you, but I am curious because I am about to book my travels and I really don’t care I go, but I do have to schedule this. I have to know where I’m gonna fly from the United States to Manila and then to one of the two locations to tell expeditions if that’s the correct name for them and I’m gonna go that way and then for six days, I don’t have to make decisions, but then depending if you see this or not, I will do that and I will then have to make sure that when I get off the boat, I’ve got lodging and I have research all this by watching travel, influencers and have a southern accent being from the United States southern North Carolina and I’ll be doing a TH-cam channel as well. I don’t have much time to do that but I’m looking forward to it because I own my business and it’s gonna be called Southern Guy solo so I enjoy your approach to travel it’s nice it’s realistic it’s how a normal person would do so hopefully you’re up. It’s your six hours away so 11 o’clock you are maybe not quite up yet depending on where you are in the world you might be somewhere else so I’m voice texting this and assassin quick opinion to be awesome how you if you see this and if you respond because I’m not much on TH-cam I’m always working but I’m trying to fix that and I’m enjoying the fruits of my labor and I’m eating the fruits of my labor and I’ve got systems in place and people in place so as a business owner, I can go do things and do something similar to you and I wish that started as young as you have. I think it’s magnificent and I’m gonna be doing the same thing and my name is Jeremy Connor. It’s very nice to meet you, sir.

Please leave that attitude andl peivileged expectations in your country. When you offend some people. you will not just face one person, you will be mauled. Show respect and obey the authorities. You can get killed whether or not you are armed but show belligerence and threaten their safety. We do not have people who attack other people randomly and without provocation in the streets or just because they want to. They will be lucky to survive and reach jail in case they are stupid enough to harm others.

The people couldnt answer honestly about foreigners when being interviewed by non other than a foreigner! We just couldn't say it infront of you! We are more candid on online forums, we are afforded anonymity. But foreigners do, that we hate a lot?, 1. Talk loudly, 2. Speak to immediately to passersby, without saying excuse me for unexpected interruption, feeling people listen to them and they think we think they are cool. 3. Also women who don't dress appropriately. I'm a man, but our women hate it.
But if I was there in the midst of all of them who do it? I always say "very nice 👍! Of course you can"

I am 30 years married to a Filipina and living 32 years in South East Asia and retired in the Philippines. If I watch interviews with foreigners it always sounds like Filipinos are the only friendly people in the World. In reality they are the same as in other countries but they act differently towards foreigners. The correct answer of one guy was that you shouldn't be disrespectful to older people. Being rude to others is not acceptable in any country. Come to the province and you will learn that many Filipinos are very jealous and act very arrogant to their own country men/women.

I agree. There are lots of friendly people in other parts of the world too and some Filipinos are still rude to other people. But perhaps I can say lots of Filipinos are naturally more welcoming, friendly and helpful people (at least, this is based on my experience from all 11 countries I've visited). Though it's not 100% true that Filipinos only act this way on foreigners. Most of them are friendly and helpful too towards fellow Filipinos. You can watch social experiments where locals help Filipinos too. I know some of them are just acting but being Filipina living here for so long, I've experienced countless scenarios wherein people here are friendly to me and doing extra mile to help me for free and I'm doing same too.. 🙂

Don’t act super special for criticizing, comparing, complaining etc. any countries not only Philippines…. If you do that you feel came from a perfect place. There’s no such perfect countries even humans. Keep your criticism for yourself not to argue or anything else. Or just leave the country and go somewhere else. Every countries have there own cultures. Good or bad they can’t changed it just respect. You’re the one who came Sacrifice few things in yourself, make adjustments. Don’t expect them to change for you. Remember you’re free to go, and stay for the right place of your choice.

If you go to the provinces, leave your shoes by the door when you enter the house. Don't use brass expressions such as F@#% and S%$@#. Its normal in the western culture but try to adapt your environment. Don't use a single finger to call them to come closer to you. Don't say 'HEY YOU!" this is rude in some areas. When they invite you to eat with them, first asses the situation if you are really supposed to eat their food, even when based on your assessment its not even enough for their family. Don't go to the dining table and start munching their bangus, adobo, and sinigang and everyone is staring at you with a smile. Be sensitive to your environment. Don't think they are hospitable because they invited you to eat with them and you ate most of their food. Now, everyone in the family is hungry yet they still treat you kindly with smile. The bottom line is you need to understand the sensitivities of FILIPINO CULTURE and BE KIND. Most of them, they smile at you where ever they meet you, try to smile back. Don't give them that stern look. You may get yourself into trouble because they would think you are showing them your western "air of superiority". When you invite them to go out, it means its your treat. If you ask someone for help or simply ask someone for a walk because you feel safe with the local that they know the area or just simply to have have a chit chat, at least buy him/her food and drink. Don't buy drink and food for yourself alone and eat by yourself while you are together. THIS IS CONSIDERED SELFISH AND RUDE BY SOME PEOPLE SPECIALLY IN PROVINCES. Keep that in mind. If they invite you to a family party don't bring your own beer and drink only your beer and bring home with you the left over of the drink you brought in with you. IT'S A NO! NO! If there are left over of the drinks, leave it for the rest of group to enjoy. This is the way to build trust and teamwork with them. Offer them to buy all the drinks and ask them to provide the pulutan or the other way around - you buy the pulutan and they buy the drinks. If they have pulutan and drinks then try to buy drinks for everyone as well. Also, if they invited you for party, try to invite them as well next time and offer the same pulutan, food, and drinks. Filipino party offers a lot of food and drinks. Do the same when you invite them. Don't invite them and offer a can of beer and few pieces of corn flakes. This is not how they treat invited guests.

The interviewees did not address the question properly. Things a foreigners should not do in The Philippines are do not criticize or say or do negative against the politcians and the big religious groups. Politicians and Religious leaders are onion skinned. You might be blacklisted and cannot come back to the Philippines. Do not shout at us or do not public shame us. We are sensitive and take everything personally as if you are humiliating them. It is our pride that kicks in. Do not run naked or have sex in public. As for respect, everyone has to respect everyone in any country. Lastly this Po, Opo is overrated thing. You do not to say as you areca foreigner. Heck even a lot of Filipinos does not say Opo or Po. Esoecially in the south. Oo or Salamat will suffice. Enjoy the Philippines.
