I actually as a little boy/young teen in the mid/late '80's(our area of Brooklyn did not have full cable TV access until the early '90's)WNYC airing "Video Music Box" the first regular show on free tv 5 days a week in America, that regularly showed the then new Hip Hop/Rap Genre. That was my biggest memory of WNYC-TV.
Wow. No wonder WNYC last on TV since the 1970s. Glad I wasn't born in the mid-1990s because I couldn't fit into a generation that involves people, The world, and life. : )

True. But with Newark-licensed WNET 13 slowly shifting its focus more towards NYC proper, it just made having another PBS station in the city redundant, so Dow Jones bought the station and took advantage of the station's commercial license status to convert it to a commercial station.
