I'm a Hunterphile and have bought every kit that I can find of the Hunter in various scales including this particular Airfix kit. All stored in the loft awaiting my retirement, in the next year and the time available to build them. At the last count I've got just shy of 350 kits of various aircraft in the loft! It's been nearly 30 years since I last built a plastic model aircraft and then painting was by impatiently slapping on with a brush in one coat, all brush strokes fully visible! I've recently treated myself to an airbrush, actually 2 one with an under slung jar which is good for large broad areas and the other gravity fed which is much better for fine work. I have several 1/72 and 1/48 scale aircraft bought at a boot sale for very little money to practice techniques before trying them on my more valued kits. Videos like this one are giving me lots of hints and tips for airbrushing. Thanks.
Extraordinary work, well done. My great uncle Les used to fly recon in Hunters. He had a flame out approaching base one day & was ordered to eject but as he was over a populated area he chose to stick with it & try to bring it home. He nearly managed it but flipped literally over the runway & unfortunately bought the farm. We always refer to him as the family hero.
Wow ! It's always humbling to hear of servicemen and their relationships with the vehicles that we build and paint, we sometimes loose sight of the ultimate sacrifice that heroes of all nationalities make in the defence of our counties. Thanks for sharing Les' story. James
I had seen your videos before but somehow this one had flown under my radar. Before watching your build I was on the fence about buying the Airfix Hunter. Now, my mind's made up. Off to the internets! Lovely work.
This new Hawker Hunter kit far out shines the ancient Testors/Hawk offering which was inaccurate in certain areas. You did a fine job on yours, now I want one!!
Thanks a lot ! I havent built the older kits as I havent been into the hobby for that long ( few years)! Its a great kit and an easy build. You'll love it
Wanted to make this but was unsure about airfix. Stumbled across your channel tonight and after watching you, I subscribed straight away. I will now certainly get one. Many thanks mate. Loved it and your ‘relaxed’ presentation; even after the wheel strut mishap. Keep em coming buddy! Thankyou Chris Lancaster UK
Thankyou Silver Finger. I'm sorry you cant model anymore and I am over the moon that one of my videos has given you a bit of your modelling fix. Thankyou for the kind words ! James
A beaut and professional build. Very enjoyable and valuable commentary and a superbly completed model. This being your first full build video is a gem...will look forward to more to come!!
Wonderful job and a great build. Audio, lighting, background music all of it was well done. Just a quick note, videoing while building is no picnic. Editing is even more of a pain. In my non-expert opinion, you did a fantastic job over all, as I stated, in my opinion. Thanks, I hope to see more.
I really enjoyed this build vid, it was just the right balance of dialog at only were it was needed, and the background music was just where it needed to be in the background. In most of these type of vids either they talk to much or they don't speak at all. You got just the right balance so that I could actually concentrate on your build without invasive distraction. As for the model itself, well executed and finished.
Joseph thankyou kindly ! I tried to get the right balance , I'm glad I hit the mark there. One thing I'm aware of is how dead pan and boring I sound. Hopefully that doesnt put people off.
A very nice and well built model, thanks for sharing the build, it has given me some tips on how to achieve a very nice finish. One thing that you could have done for a even more realistic finish(if you had not done it, I didn’t manage to see, even when re-watching a few times) was to finish the main wheel aligning spike in the wheel bays in a highly polished metal finish, a spike I and many others became best friends with after hitting our heads on it a few times, and it hurt like hell I can assure you. I can’t remember (to many years have passed by) if the spike was on all the marks of hunter in service but I would bet they were, just a little suggestion from a model maker returning to the hobby after about 40 years, and boy have things changed, for the better I might add, with a vast array of kits and paints etc that didn’t exist when I last picked up a brush(no airbrushes back then) and to have tutorials at my fingertips is excellent, thank you.
Fantastic build and arguably the best video quality of all YT modelling videos. Thanks for putting this up. Also, your Totoro solution to keep the decal water warm was just a revelation if my assumption is correct that that's what it was. ^^ Looking forward to the re-upload of your Bf-109 video in UHD. It got even better with tool and color infos and also your skill. Keep em coming!
Tinhead thankyou ! Your comment is very encouraging and it made my evening. Its heartening to see my TH-cam channel grow thanks to folks like you supporting the process. The Totoro thingy was a cheap USB cup warmer I bought from wish. Very handy for long decal sessions ! The 109 is being rendered right now but I will only re release it once the quality goes up to at least 1080. Many thanks for the kind words James
Surely they did a Hunter in 1/72nd. It's usually that before larger scale. Used to love building these but watching the painting skill & attention to small detail finished me on the ground. still awestruck tho. Nice to watch
Revell of Germany do an amazing Hunter in 1/72, just been rereleased as well. Airfix would not sell many as a result. Their choice of 1/48 was well planned.
Really nice relaxing build, and a beautiful subject - about to try black basing for the first time on an RAF Mustang - hope it looks as good - you do realise I'll blame you if goes horribly wrong lol - thanks for sharing - subscribed.
Black basing is my go to at the moment. ! Good luck ! Heres a more in depth snippet I used on a fw190. Hopefully you can access it ! m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=2228749974079983&id=1801757760112542
That is one of the most beautiful models I've seen on TH-cam. Great work, commentary is entertaining and informative, well done. Beautiful aircraft too. 10/10 five star ***** A+ upwards pointing thumb
Excellent build but I have a question. I'm in the middle of building this model as a Dutch Hunter. I notice you used the straight aft section where as every picture I've see of a F6 hunter had the tail section with the eyelid like projection on top of the tail section. I am impress with the parts fit, just kind of snaps together.
Very nicely done! The Hunter is to jets what the Spitfire is to piston engined fighters - incomparably elegant but with no sacrifice to function. We will never see the like again,,,,
Nice build... I do always try to get away with airbrush camo... and not always work as you clearly stated... Anyway, subscribed and looking forward to new builds... My Hawker Hunter has advanced a couple of places in my pile of kits waiting to be built...
Very life-like paint job. I hope I may use some of your methods in my building. Maybe it's just me but I just found the in- and out-focusing between stages a bit hard on my eyes.
Just for interest the Hunter, from 1956, on was painted with a 2 part epoxide high gloss paint, with superior adhesion properties to withstand the rigors of high speed flight . Originally the specification was DTD5555 updated in 1965 to DTD5555A.............the Lightning was a far quicker aircraft than the obsolete Hunter!
Great video! I am definitely looking forward to seeing more builds. I was just a bit disappointed you didn't show final painting and assembly on the landing gear. You showed assembly right up to painting the exterior, but no detail work on the wheels or gear itself after the exterior was painted. I had hoped to see how you went about doing that. Subscribed and hoping for another build soon!
Matthew thankyou very much. The main gear was sprayed with the underside colours and there wasnt much to show, next time I'll make sure to focus on the gear for a bit longer. There will be a new video, hopefully soon. I have been a little busy of late but the schedule will be clearer soon ! Also theres the question of what to build ! Thanks James
Beautiful build. Haven't build a plane model in over 40 years, used to have over 100 hundred hanging from the ceiling in my room growing up and this is definitely stirring the urge to do it again. Since my dad flew the Hawker Hunter for Royal Danish Air Force (eskadrille 724) in the 50's, I would want to use proper roundel decals. Any suggestion where I can get my hands on those or would I have to hand paint? Thanks.
Hi Jan I have had a look at various sites but cant seem to find the markings your looking for. You may have to mask the roundels yourself ! Thankyou for watching !
It's a good kit ! I think there were a few builds on britmodeller. Hopefully it gives airfix a cash boost so they can work on adding just a tiny bit more detail !
Thanks Mark. I'm using mig extra thin cement, running the glue over a join or seam works well with the extra thin glues you can get. Capillary action draws the glue into the seam or gap as they are so thin. Making some gluing jobs a breeze !
Hi nick the seat you can get from a lot of places so here is the scalemates page www.scalemates.com/kits/quickboost-qb-48-550-hawker-hunter-ejection-seat-with-safety-belts--222200 The decals are by Xtradecal which you can get at hannants, there are many other choices as well. www.hannants.co.uk/product/X48105

Thats some collection, it'll keep you occupied for a long while ! The hunter is one of my favorite jets, the sleek lines do it for me .
Extraordinary work, well done. My great uncle Les used to fly recon in Hunters. vubear he would have ejected. Sorry to learn.
Really nice job. I particularly like how you got the fact that there is no paint on the frame at the rear of the canopy. So many people forget this.
Thanks Zedhol! I noticed that when researching other kits, it made matching the camo underneath a pain though !
Great build, very nice video. I wish Airfix would put out a 1/72 Hunter.
I had seen your videos before but somehow this one had flown under my radar. Before watching your build I was on the fence about buying the Airfix Hunter. Now, my mind's made up. Off to the internets! Lovely work.
The masking of the canopy was a work of art in itself. Fantastic build ... can only aspire to achieve those sort of results.
Many thanks ! I usually buy an eduard set for masks, I make too many mess ups when cutting out the frame.. lucky this time

Thanks Chris ! I'm glad you liked it ! That undercarriage break was a little infuriating but I'm not a stressful person 😂 usually..
Absolutley stonking, I cant build models anymore and havent since the late 1980's, watching good vids like this with good end results is nostalgic.
Thankyou Silver Finger. I'm sorry you cant model anymore and I am over the moon that one of my videos has given you a bit of your modelling fix. Thankyou for the kind words ! James
I really appreciated the restrained volume of the background music. Nice build.
Thanks a lot Gerry ! Getting the balance right is tricky !
Great build, great lines!!! The Hawker Hunter is a beautiful jet!!!
Thanks a lot ! Im surprised my first build video is still getting views to be fair. The filming and editing was all a bit haphazard
A beaut and professional build. Very enjoyable and valuable commentary and a superbly completed model. This being your first full build video is a gem...will look forward to more to come!!
Gorgeous just gorgeous thanks for your upload 🤗
I have enjoyed your simple approach and fine ending
Great build. Video is great, too. Good pace, not too fast or too slow. Right amount of info. All said, a great job.
Many thanks Ray !
Really enjoyed watching that, and I learnt a lot. Planning on build this model in the near future. Thanks for taking the time to make the video.
Many thanks Richard !
What a great job. Great video too! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I just adore it, you did an excellent job on your kit.
Thanks Martin!

Very nice build, I’d be more than happy to turn out a model as nice. 👍🏼
Many thanks Bill ! Glad you liked it !
Lovely model and a great paint job, I'm tempted to get this kit now !!!!
It's a nice model , you wont be disappointed.

A great build and excellent build for a first timer, I look forward to more in the future.
Thanks Les ! Theres a 109 in the works if luftwaffe is any interested to you !
Excellent Job !!! Always Loved the Cold War Hunters : )
Cheers from Exeter, NH. USA
I recently bought this kit and the fit of the airbrake... hinge... and the antenna behind the canopy was perfect. It seems AirFix have taken notice!
Absolutely gorgeous! Congratulations!
Mine is from Matchbox, 1/72 scale and assembled in the eighties, but it looks nice too...
wonderful job the model looks superb, very good narration too.
Thanks Roger !
Fantastic build, buddy!
I like it when colours are announced in the subtitles.
I would soooo like Airfix to release one of those in 1/72. That's a lovely looking kit and a great result.
They would be mad not to !
Surely they did a Hunter in 1/72nd. It's usually that before larger scale. Used to love building these but watching the painting skill & attention to small detail finished me on the ground. still awestruck tho. Nice to watch
Vintage AIRFIX 1/72 Hawker Hunter Rare Bagged Kit 1960 Model Kit
Revell of Germany do an amazing Hunter in 1/72, just been rereleased as well. Airfix would not sell many as a result. Their choice of 1/48 was well planned.
I have always considered the Hunter to be a very elegant looking aeroplane.
Hello! Nice kit and not bad of a result. Well done!
The Quickboost seat seems to be a good investment.
Thanks for posting!
Thanks a lot ! The seat is well worth the money !
Look forward to seeing more of the kind, super video.
Thanks gerald keep your eyes peeled !
Great first build video. A very professional production. Subscribed!

What a beautiful plane the Hunter was.
Awesome build! love the detail in the canopy, the seat was a brilliant addition.

Great format. Subscribed.
Stumbled across, watched, liked and subscribed! 👍🏻👌🏻👏🏻🍻
That is one of the most beautiful models I've seen on TH-cam.

nice build simple and to the point.
Thanks Cruz that was the goal !
Very nice, well done.
Thanks William !
Very nicely done! The Hunter is to jets what the Spitfire is to piston engined fighters - incomparably elegant but with no sacrifice to function. We will never see the like again,,,,
I Agree Edmund. It's a fantastic aircraft, I'm not usually a jet fan and the Hunter is up there with my favourite modern jets. Thanks !
Nice build... I do always try to get away with airbrush camo... and not always work as you clearly stated... Anyway, subscribed and looking forward to new builds... My Hawker Hunter has advanced a couple of places in my pile of kits waiting to be built...
love ur build you really inspire me to do modeling!!!!
Lovely build - keep it up!
Thanks! More content soon
Brilliant work! I love this aircraft. Subbed...
Many thanks ! Cant argue with a guy with a Monty python username !
Ditto, subbed as well.
Great build. Thanks for sharing.
Many thanks !
FOR FIRST VIDEO VERY WELL DONE
Thankyou there will be more !
Very life-like paint job. I hope I may use some of your methods in my building. Maybe it's just me but I just found the in- and out-focusing between stages a bit hard on my eyes.
Thankyou Pierre, I will try a different transition or make them less annoying in future !
It wasn’t just you 😢😢😢

Thanks a lot Denny !
Very nice build 👍. Keep the videos coming 😃
love it mate, very nice, top work ,i have subscribed and looking forward to your next build .

Bravo! Great job!

Very nice ! Never done the jug. But will
Many thanks !
Hope this selling well for Airfix, looks a nice kit. I've not really seen any built up on any of the modelling forums I dip in and out of.
It's a good kit ! I think there were a few builds on britmodeller. Hopefully it gives airfix a cash boost so they can work on adding just a tiny bit more detail !
Nothing is like the Academy Kit
Brilliant, well done
Nice!.. thank you 👍✈️
Impressive and a well done job. Butt what a difference to the original Airfix models.
He's got the moves with that brush!
Thanks !!
A fine build, and extra points for doing the music too!
Thanks a lot Peter !
I see a lot of people gluing the outside of parts. What's the thinking behind this and what glue are you using? Great finished model btw.
Thanks Mark. I'm using mig extra thin cement, running the glue over a join or seam works well with the extra thin glues you can get. Capillary action draws the glue into the seam or gap as they are so thin. Making some gluing jobs a breeze !
Very nice, quick question though, should the main wheels really be at such an angle away from the vertical?
Thanks Greg. No comment here. I'm no hunter expert and that was the angle the parts sat on the legs.
Fantastic build! I should be getting round to some 1/48 scale kits on my channel at some point too ☺️
It's a diverse scale , but eats space. Like the 32nds I'm working on at the mo.
Excellent!! Bravo!!
Wish you would have kept the canopy open....after so much beautiful detailing inside :) Great looking aircraft.
Many thanks mate!
I was tempted to keep the lid open, I chickened out in the end 😂
Nice 1st vid mate I look forward to seeing more from you mate
Thanks a lot ! There will definitely be more content to come !
Best Kit ever by Airfix: The E.E. Lightning! Best Kit ever by Academy: Hawker Hunter!
I have yet to try the academy kit but I hear good things !
What a good looking airplane
Cheers JV +
Excellent I have one of this and I will build very soon....
Awesome ! Good luck with the build
Hi man how did you get your ejection seat handle yellow colour so vibrant and crisp lines?!
Hello how many hours does IT take yOu to make this model excluding drying time?
Beautiful
Thanks Harry !
Awesome ...
Nice build could you put a link for the seat and decs
Hi nick the seat you can get from a lot of places so here is the scalemates page

Great job, like it!
What airpressure did you use for your airbrush please
