Your voice is perfect for the works of Arthur Machen none do it better. If you still record novels, his Hill of Dreams would be a incredible production. His short story "Novel of the Black Seal" could also make for a good audiobook.
Agree. I usually space out for the first 30 minutes until they start talking about the green book. Tony's narration keeps it moving until the story picks up.
Thank you for doing this excellent job - on one of the greatest weird tales of all time. No one seems to get the ending. A playmate for Wilbur and Helen...was 'on the way'.😢😢😢😅😅
I spent many happy hours inside Arthur Machen's house as a child as my mother worked for the then owner and always looked forward to going back there. I have lots of happy memories of my visits to that lovely old house at 33, High Street, Caerleon which is now a shop, and will always be a cherished part of my childhood. ❤R.I.P Arthur Machen 1863_1947.
@ClassicGhost It's changed a bit since it became a shop but still looks the same outside as I knew his house back then. I'm sure you would like to see it for yourself.
Oh I was so hoping he would discuss this one at the end! So bizarre. Reminds me of all the old English names with the root “white” to pay homage to the faeries.
Sorcery & Sanctity...One of my favourite stories, an exquisite jewel of British supernatural literature. In a letter to AM the Rev. Montague Summers inquired about the curious names and folklore in this tale and Machen replied that these were his own creations.
Fantastic story and narration! This is a great one. The stories told in the "green book" remind me of my adventures in the woods and through the fields when I was a kid. I have not read this story. I have listened to this story various times, three over the last year, and this is the only version in which I was able to fully understand the sights at the end. The first 30 minutes could lose an audience if not narrated properly. You did a fantastic job, Tony, and kept the story moving. I like how the ending connects to the beginning, making it all make sense. Machen does that in other stories, too, especially in "The Three Impostors." I love all the stories included in the green book. They are amazing! "I wondered if it hurt very much to be burned at the stake." Good lord. Great job. Thanks for this treat!
This has to be THE best rendition of a difficult story. I've just experienced depths and meanings that have eluded me for years! Now I know what name the nurse used for the nymphs!
Awesome, thank you! I'm going to listen to the actual story again, (not the lead in), lying in my hammock tonight here in paradise! I find sometimes the scene setting can be very dry, but persevere people, its like unwrapping a difficult chocolate, the tasty centre is right there once you get through the layers of paper!
This video came out in perfect timing to listen to while I do my sewing. It's not really sewing; it's just hemming. Still, it'll take me forever! 😏 I'm happy to be able to listen to your reading during this laborious choir, Tony, while I endeavor to save money by skipping a seamstress. I'm so glad I can get to your channel and listen to your voice once again. Hopefully, everything has been fixed with your account being hacked! People!! 🙄 Hello from North Carolina, in the States, of course. 👋 Yay! It's the spooky season! ☠️👻😱 PS I learn so much interesting information during your little commentaries at the end of the videos. Thank you. I am one person who loves that you do this.
I'm great 😊. I think this was extremely well done, with the animation and the soundtrack being the icing on the cake. All very tasteful--a fitting tribute to Machen.
Ye olde Gods🦌 now this is the type of stories that live for!! I love the primitive mystery and even beauty that comes with the mystique of such ancient beliefs and I think a lot of us are yearning to learn more of the old ways and to appreciate it for What it was, seems to be steeped in something mystical that we can feel...deep down in our DNA somewhat. Thanks for this Tony!!! This is one of my most favorite, slightly folk horror stories to suggest to people. Bless you Arthur Machen for such great works as these.
Remember tho' that Machen was an Anglo-Catholic Grail-mystic who described Christianity as the 'last great Mystery-Religion'. But, I agree, he had a deep feel for ancient Celtic presences, mythic resonances and arcana...
The mythos made complete sense to me. Sounds like ancient language and beliefs around the mounds, tombs, standing stones, seasonal and lunar/solar celebrations, shabbats. Ancient groups and practices including some from Roman times now become mythical. Bits passed on, from what can be remembered. It sings to many of us. Not a fan of Montague Sommers as a person. Very glad the author of this work misled him. Brilliant reading, Tony. You are a vocal artist.
I felt sure that I had heard you narrate thi one before... Oh well. ( insert puzzled look here ). What an odyssey! Loved it! Thank you Tony. I really missed your talk at the end, but understand that you're a busy man right now, and that was a big and winding tale. ✨🎃🧚
Have you stopped doing commentary at the end? This is the most recent of your videos of watched and was a little disappointed that there was none. I always find it interesting.
Sounds like the author had several bits and bobs of stories, and he tossed them together like a salad. This proves I will listen to Tony read anything 😅
I know this may be a trifling point, but what, eventually, took the life of the girl. Her interactions with the Nymph, Alanna, or her drinking of the water at the well-affecting her over time? I’m guessing the former. What do all of you think?
So much leeway and pardon for the criminal and his/her actions. But good is punished, so you will remember, and do the evil thing, NOT GOOD. Very Satanic. 😢
I agree. A darker much more grown up version of Alice's Adventures. I can hear strains of Angela Carter in this too. The stories must be told and re-told.
I agree. I feel like this is bc Tony affects his voice too often. The basic narrative thread gets lost when listened to as an audio only text. Love Tony and respect his work. Better than I could ever do. But I have had this experience before bc narrative is like constant affectation of voice. Sometimes less is more.
This story is incredibly difficult to follow at the best of times anyway. It really is something one has to read for themselves because its such a weird stream of consciousness.
WOW! Thank you for reading this! He is a far better writer than Lovecraft imo! He's criminally underrated

@@onepiecefan74 Hill of Dreams is my favourite. one day Id like to do it
@@ClassicGhost I'm a patron, but I'd donate to fund such a production.
Machen is one of those writers whose work I just never "got" until I heard Tony speak it, then I fell in love with his fevered, heightened language.
Tony, as always, takes me on journeys I otherwise would never even attempt to travel. Tony could read anything and I would sit up and listen.

Geez Tony! I feel like I've been on a 24-hour psychedelic journey. I'm going to need a nap!😂

I tried to get into the locked drawer today didn't I?
My wife and I say this at least once a week :D

What’s their secret?
It's a clip from an early 70s film called Psychomania (aka The Death Wheelers) and it's "locked room". I blame the posh accent.

Wow I have waited so long for this… you are perfect for it, Sir! Thank you, Tony ❤️
Very fond of mr machen, he's from here so i read him a while ago. Great to hear you cover this, thank you
One of my favorite stories. Very well done, Mr. Tony. Thanks.
I enjoyed this story immensely. Thank you so much for sharing it.
Arthur Machen's writing is like cosmic folk horror
I think that's a good description
One of my favourite stories. Thank you so much for this upload. 😊🖤
Enjoyed this. As something of an Alice Through The Looking Glass vibe.
victorian weird
Fell asleep to this last night. Dreamed about a white mare that was stricken with terror. Woke up at some point to the creepy music at end. ❤
Ooo. That's very interesting. How are you today?

Mari Lwyd....or a border Oss....
Brilliant. Charming voices, casting charms.
Okay, this one woke me up. Gonna have to look into this again 2 AM can't grasp this.
Epic! Great narration. At times You sounded a bit like Donovan reciting the tale of Atlantis.
Wow. I think that's a compliment and I'm taking it.
Way down, below the ocean . . .
Now the thumbnail has motion.
I hope other people saw that😮

He did release the story in two parts about a year ago. I’m not sure if it’s the same recording because it’s been a year or more.
Yes, it was a long one. Yes this was a relaunch because it sunk without a trace last time
This goes in my Favorites. A bazillion thank yous.
If I were to ever try acid or mushrooms, this story would be my bad trip
Yes, I wouldn't fancy it either
Excellent eerie outtro music. You have hidden talents for presenting menace via music. It reminds me off the song Allaska by UK.
I’ll have to listen to that . i don’t know it

That animation was cool
Will return, not quite ready for this now. Still a big fan, Tony. As always.
I love this story, thank you so much for doing it 💜 😊😊
That animation creeped me out 😮
Wow this looks spooky. Diving in! Your voice is the icing 😍.
Perfectly narrated as always!
Glad you think so! Thanks for staying with me
Part fairy tale, part horror.....amazing story.
This was a fascinating story. I loved the retelling The Twisted Ones or it might be a sort of sequel
Can't wait until my shift starts at 6am so I can listen
Whooooaaa.... Came for the waffle but stayed for the psychedelic doomcore ;)
Lol
Excellent read, Mr. Walker

This is the weirdest story i know besides The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath. Cosmic faerie tales and feverish journeys.
I love the dream quest of unknown kadath
@@ClassicGhost I first read it as a teen, and it blew the top of my head off of without the aid of drugs. These stories really stretch your mind!
