Speaking as a former cruise ship staff member, this video forgot to mention one very important tip: if you don't want to spend your vacation surrounded by screeching, hyperactive little devils running wild and getting underfoot, you're going to want to stay far away from Disney Cruises. Same goes for Carnival Cruises in particular during Xmas Week, March Break and the months of July/August.

I went on a cruise once. The decor of the ship was a little drab and gray and the food wasn't the best, long lines. But, there was exciting entertainment on the top deck all the time. Lots of jets taking off and landing!

Another tip for planning a cruise. If you’re seniors, retired, and have flexibility to cruise when schools are in session, you can avoid a lot of the noise etc of the kids running around. Also, if you can plan 10-12 day cruises these are less popular with families.

I have an alternative tip on your #4 -- went on a Holland America with 1200 passengers, 800 were from some weird religious group wearing bonnets...we expected the worst, but it was the best cruise ever -- they didn't use the spa, the bars, the gym or the formal dining. Turned out amazing!!!

I went on 4 cruises 2005 to 2008 with my wife and 3 kids. RC, Princess, Carnival, and Norwegian. In each cruise six close friends joined us. It couldn't have been better. Our dining room tables were our own and we basically had a blast. Met some nice folks, and ship's staff were great. RC was by far the best. My kids still remember the name of the young man who waited on us. The worst thing about cruising is when the vacation is over you don't want to get off the ship and go home.

My friend and I completely unknowingly went on an Elvis themed cruise. We found out when we boarded and there were a ton of people wearing Elvis shirts and Elvis door decorations on a lot of the rooms. There were quite a few impersonators on the cruise as well. All these people had their own meetings/events they could go to as well, so they didn't take over the entire ship.

I once did a repositioning cruise with RCL's Serenade of the Seas as she was going into a new operational area for another season. It was honestly the best cruise I've done; a 2 week Panama Canal from Puerto Rico to San Fransisco with stops in DR, Columbia, through the Canal, Costa Rica, and 3 Mexican stops. Amazing experience at a great price point because it was repositioning. I'd love to redo this trip to better film the crossing, my camcorder only filmed at 480p.

I’ve cruised Alaska twice. The first was in mid-September. There were a couple of days with somewhat rough seas. The second was in late June ( the summer solstice) and it was perfect. Weather was great and seas were calm. One thing I advise people on cruises to Alaska, if it fits your schedule, cruise out of Vancouver. If you cruise in and out of Seattle, the Jones Act requires ships to stop at a Canadian port, usually Victoria. Many times this is a short and/or late stop so check the itinerary times for the port stops. But by all means, Alaska is a wonderful place to cruise.

Great points. However, we booked the very last cruise before a certain ship would be sent to Asia, to be converted into a floating casino. While our cruise was taking place, workers removed all the wall artwork, applied a layer of duct tape to the carpets, closed their only pool and sundeck to store furniture there and used the elevators to move furniture. Some bars would have limes, others not. Service became very rude and rare and the atmosphere on board became similar to a funeral parlor. I could not wait to disembark from that clunker! So, please considering adding the "funeral" cruise along with the ones you listed.

Gary: Timing the Alaska cruises is a matter of taste. Having grown up in one of it's major ports of call (Sitka), it's true weather can be an issue, but if you're going for a scenic cruise the dynamic weather offers some awesome photo ops.
Also, close to peak summer the small towns get CROWDED with tourists ( we would have as many as four or five of the big tour ships in addition to the smaller "specialty" cruise boats). If
you are looking for crowds, that's fine, but be aware of it!

I came across your tips videos by accident while checking out possible cruises for 2019. I have been glued to my laptop ever since. You have some wonderful advice and things the first or second time cruiser would not know and even people like myself, who has been on approximately 10 cruises. I have to say, I have not been too good about trying different cruise lines. I have stuck with Royal Caribbean & Celebrity. I have been on two Carnival ones, but they are party ships, for the most part and have a lot of younger people. I am a retired woman who enjoys the peacefulness of a cruise because I do have to travel alone these days. Thanks for all the information you give to us.

Great to hear ! Thanks for watching and good to hear you have been checking out lots of the videos. It is pretty hard to take the risk to try another line once you found one you really like. I always worry maybe missing out on something but is you like one and the people on a line seems good idea to stay with it I think! I’ve never been on Carnival for that reason but feel I should do as are so big and popular!

Gary, thanks for responding. After going on R.C. and Celebrity and then taking a Carnival cruise, I found that the care you received and even the meal presentation is far below that of the other ships. I have no plans to go on Carnival again. The other thing I found was that you were constantly walking past trays of dirty dishes in the hallways because there is so much partying going on and sick people. Some of those trays sat there all day and night with no one picking them up. My very first cruise was on the S. S. Oceanic, so you know how old I am. LOL

Joyce: Aha a single woman! Jackpot. What's it like to travel alone?! I've avoided cruises because I'd have to pay for double occupancy and I'm alone. What about meals if you dont have a dinner partner? What about shipboard activites if you don't have a partner to sign up with? I don't want to be like Lucy playing table tennis with a 6 year old because Ricky was busy and she was solo. Any guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!!!

    Re: themed cruises.
We enjoyed the "Blues Cruise" transatlantic on QM2, late 2015, but then, it was Cunard who had organised it and it was Gregory Porter and other jazz musicians on board, playing with him and in other small groups. Not that we saw them apart from when they were performing.

All of this I found very logical and good advice, except the short cruises. I took a three day cruise for our first cruise, mostly because I was afraid of motion sickness. We have since fallen in love with the short cruise. It’s inexpensive and it’s easier to get away for a short period of time. Some people might be there to party, but we weren’t and those that did, didn’t bother us at all. We are an older couple and definitely not partyers. We had a lot of fun and relaxation. I believe every cruise is what you make of it.

Tammy Montgomery I agree. My first cruise was a 7 day cruise. After 3 days, I was ready to get off that ship! After that first cruise, I’ve only gone on short 3 or 4 day cruises and enjoyed every minute!

Such great advice. My wife and I did a honeymoon cruise and since we had kids no longer in school, did not really think of spring break. Well, as you can guess the cruise was full of kids. The kids overloaded the pools and hot tubs, the college-level age group decided they were adults so took over the "adult" pool and spa leaving the 30+ folks to find other activities. THANK GOD we always opt for a room with a balcony. We spent more time there than anywhere else, just to have a little quiet and privacy (obviously).

EXCELLENT ADVICE!! If people listen to all of what you say here, they will benefit. One thing I might add is no Disney Cruises unless you have kids. This is one of the few times in my life where I am giving advice on a cruise I have not taken, but there is a reason: I have been on many other cruises and we often overlapped with Disney ships in port. The Disney families usually had a herd of kids with them and were underfoot in every store and attraction in port (they always have something to identify them as Disney-mouse ears, shore bag, Ariel wig, something.) If you DO have kids, maybe Disney is for you.

@@tipsfortravellers DCL is extremely expensive and 1 port with entitled parents with their spawn is why we decided against(you can escape them at the Disney parks not a ship). Most combine with their WDW trips.
They do have Adventures by Disney which may be better, haven't checked them out.
