    This is by FAR the best explanation of compression I have ever heard.

    Nathan, how do you know if the threshold is right?

    • @NathanHeffington
      @NathanHeffington  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is different with each source. Do you want to set the threshold high enough so that it will catch the unwanted noise floor but low enough so that it’s not causing voices or instruments to drop out. In other words, it needs to be at a level that is higher than the bleed or room noise that is unwanted, but lower then the quietest signal that you want to keep from your intended source. It’s one of those things where your ears are way more valuable than any particular number. What sounds good is good.

    I have this console, but my gates are now adding crunchy digital sounding artifacts when it didn't before. settings were all the same and haven't been able to resolve it.

      I would try updating the firmware on the board.

      @@NathanHeffington Did that after I posted this. From a bit of testing the gates seem fine now. I'll know more when I go to use it in a couple days for a show.

    Thank you for the video! The X32 can sure do a lot! I'm still kind of new to the X32. How exactly (step by step) do I keep the musicians from hearing the gates in their in ears? Thank you! I mean, what exact buttons do I push what knobs do I turn. I've watched A LOT of videos, hoping to find my questions answered and I'm still striking out. Thank you!

      I don't have the board in front of me right now, but I will give my best based on the x32 software.
      Press routing button next to screen
      Find the output associated with the musician's ears (if it is an aux channel go to aux out, if it is one of the 16 xlr outs go to out1-6)
      Select the appropriate routing bus in the menus (if they are using mixbus 2 for their monitor, for example, select that)
      Rotate the knob that changes the cursor under the "tap" menu until the top option is selected (IN/LC)
      This may or may not work. I have read several people's complaints that this doesn't work with Aux buses. A side effect will be that this will also send the signal to the ears BEFORE eq/effects/etc, so it may not be what you are looking for at all. There may be another solution to this issue, but this is the one that pops into my head initially. Let me know if it works!

      Sorry, I don't quite understand the question, can you clarify?

      The software is the X-32 edit software for Mac. It may not be the most current version. In reference to your second question, unfortunately, it looks like there is no easy way to do that. The problem, it seems to me, is that in the snippets menu the sends are grouped into large sections and you can't save the "mix group" settings directly, only the sends from the channels. That means that, if you had your IEMs for Band Member A set up on mix bus 8 and you wanted to recall the send settings for channels 1-16, you couldn't just recall those settings without changing what is being sent to mix buses 1-7. The mixes would change for any monitors, recorders, or IEMs that you had set up on all of those buses. This means that you would only allow you to recall a group of IEM settings. For example, if you set up your IEMs on buses 9-12, you could set up your mixes for a bank of 4 people on those channels. Save a snippet with the "sends 9-12" box selected along with any of the channels that you want them to be able to hear. So, if all of your instruments and vocals are on channels 1-16, check all of those. Save the snippet and name it the names of those 4 people. Now, when you recall it, you have those 4 IEM settings. Also, because you are really trying to recall information about a bunch of channels (where they are sending), but only as it relates to a single bus (the one going to a specific IEM), you can't save a channel preset for the mixbus and recall all of the channels that are being routed to it. The solution that makes the most sense to me would be for a firmware update from Behringer that would allow the selection of each send individually. That would allow you to select only the send associated with the mix bus that you wanted, select all the channels that you want running to it, and save a snippet as the person's name. You should suggest that to Behringer, because I am sure it is an issue that others have had as well. Does anybody else know of a different way to do this?
