Bino I was one of those many, whom did NOT know or were properly trained on palms . I have trimmed many ( thousands ) BUT in the early years. you gave a great explanation of starting from the bottom, then having the whole pile of dead frowns, fall right on top of me ! I was lucky . here to share I constantly try to inform palm trimmers please start on the top .. . we can not help those who will not learn a safer way. too many tree workers, I've meet. always say. I know what im doing ! I can only share if they want to listen. ya do not need to be certified .. JUST educated on proper technique of what ever tree one is working ..
thanks as always for great information

I'd say don't wait for decades before starting this job. I have seen this kind of work here in KSA where I live, and let's not discuss the safety standards here. Dudes have to climb the palms using a kind of big belt, no safety measures at all. But they groom the trees every few years, more often in places where people walk, so they never have to cut through that kind of thick, heavy frown. Just a few individual leaves each time, that they can guide with one hand while hacking it off with the other.

I've seen News stories about the palm tree deaths--a terrible & haunting accident that must devastate loved ones. I hope they never see the cruelty in Comments mocking their loss. Am not a tree trimmer, but often involved in work at properties + with contractors, vendors, workers. Recommend your vids for the pragmatic How To. Over years, huge changes of long-time residents getting displaced, replaced with, eh, those not familiar w/local flora, fauna; fires, floods, snow pack, etc. AND not familiar w functional Tasks. Fly-by-night hire 'day laborers' for so many dangerous jobs. So sick of greed. Hope you're doing okay. This is a hard video subject and your care for the people involved is evident. This is why rich people want more undocumented workers like the ones I worked alongside for several years when I was a tree trimmer. One day on a particularly dangerous job, the boss gave us a lecture. It wasn't for those of us who had experience, it was mainly for the new guys. He talked about how much work we had ahead of us that day and how dangerous it would be, but that we also needed to hurry. Then he reminded us what would happen if we got hurt. Quote: "If you get hurt, I will drive you to the emergency room and dump you at the entrance, and I don't know you and you don't know me. You got that - sumbitches?" Then he also mumbled the same thing in Tex-Mex.
We were all desperate to feed our families and didn't have a lot of options - so we accepted the rules. And although some of us were citizens, if we wanted that job, we had to accept the same rules that the undocs and convicts had to go by, or we wouldn't have a job to feed our families with.

In Florida, you need 4 hours of training to become a Class B Tree Trimmer. After eighteen months you can get a Class A License after you complete the ISA course and get certified as an arborist.
Entry level arborists make as little as $12/hour in Florida. $24 is "pretty good" pay for an experienced worker.

Why is the first thing people ALWAYS want to do is to pass more regulations and laws?! We are already burdened by WAAAAY too many laws! How about we just train people? If trained people want to ignore their training then so be it. If a homeowner wants to trim their own tree wrong and endanger themselves the so be it. We can't legislate intelligence.

I hired a young man to trim the fronds at my house in the mid 90's. The tree was approximately 80-90' tall and the fronds were only along the top 20-25' or so. He climbed/trimmed from the bottom up. He was a nice neighbor in the industry and I would give him sidework. This is terrifying that he could've died while working for me. I had zero clue this was even a possibility.

If a person takes on a job while not having the knowledge nessasarry to do that job safely, it's on him. Learn your craft and do it safely. In today's world, safely information is at your fingertips through a cell phone. If you don't have a cell phone, information is available at the country's library free of charge. People have been dropped all manner of trees on them selves for thousands of years. Regulations won't chang that . People will continue to take on jobs that they are not prepared to do safely regardless of regulations . Bottom line, your personal safety is your responsibility! I've trimmed probably 100 Washingtonias. Nasty, dangerous trees. Always a mess and full of animals. I've run into beehives, rats, crows, bats and a huge Barn Owl. Always spiked and used a old Buck-strap and luckily never had an issue. The first person I heard about dying in a palm was a guy in Orange County, CA who was trapped for hours. This was back sometime in the 90's.

One guy disturbed a large bees nest and they messed him up. Guy was screaming with What looked like a swarm of bees attacking him as he was trying to lower the boom truck we thought he was going to jump out of the bucket. Ambulance showed up about 20 minutes later along with paramedics, they took him away he Musta got stung a lot next day the tree trimmers are back with Bee suits To finish up that one tree the swarm of bees was still there

The best way to avoid these accidents is that try to remove the dead palm leaves as soon as possible so that they don't accumulate and it will be easier for DIY removal. A long bamboo pole with a branch saw at the end will easily do the job. If you let it accumulate for years then the safe way is from the top and it will be too costly because you have to rent a crane.

I have an idea to avoid loss of life when trimming plam trees. You see here in the north east we use helicopters with sawblades to clear powerlines along the mountains ranges. if one were to use a helicopter and to attach the top of the palm tree to a rope to a helicopter when cutting the palm tree the palm tree can be easily lifted and disposed of in a different area. yes this would be expensive but the loss of life is priceless.

Then they cut off a mass of the tree and the tree snaps back and sways and that karoom back and forth like a carnival ride. It's amazing they're not thrown or that the tree doesn't snap off. Of course, they probably do in some cases. Tragic that folks are just trying to make a living and either being forced into or blunder into situations they don't know will kill them.

This is why rich people need more undocumented workers like the ones I worked alongside for several years when I was a tree trimmer. You got that - sumbitches?"
We were all desperate to feed our families and didn't have a lot of options - so we accepted the rules. And although some of us were citizens, if we wanted that job, we had to accept the same rules that the undocs and convicts had to go by, or we wouldn't have a job to feed our families with.
