    the way I've always thought about the board sizes was that 3x3 is too small, 4x4 is for learning, and 5x5/6x6 are where the actual game is

    • @iamevn
      @iamevn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      (anything bigger is simply Too Big and the game would take too long)

    • @SimmonTak
      @SimmonTak 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Most of the online tournament games are played on a 6x6 board. We do have one tournament each year played on 7x7, but it's the outlier. And the game does last a *long* time on the 7x7 or 8x8 size.
      But yeah, I typically have people learn the game on a 5x5 size board and then they move up to 6x6 once they get the hang of the rules. 3x3 is solved as a win for first player, but it and 4x4 are good for young kids to pick up - like around age 4-6.

      Why? This game looks cool, but the series is bland as heck. The past and future storylines seem entirely disconnected, and while future Kvoth is an interesting character, past Kvoth is pretty clearly a (badly written) wish fulfillment character. "Oh yeah, the fairy queen let me go because I se*ed her sooooo good. And I'm a super genius, but I just can't seem to grasp why the super deadly sword monks might have an oath of non-violence. It's not like they have a built in respect for life in their ideology, and view actively using their combat skills as a grim necessity rather than something to be lauded or anything."

    • @Adderkleet
      @Adderkleet 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This game isn't the one described in the books. The one described in the books is (or is almost identical to) Go/Baduk. This version of Tal really isn't about controlling territory like the game in the books.

  • @SimmonTak
    @SimmonTak 2 ปีที่แล้ว +73

    Heck yeah! Gotta love Tak! There are tons of tournaments and there's great competition there. There's even a beginner tournament (specifically for beginners) starting in a few weeks, so registration will be opening in the next couple days and there's prizes and the whole shebang.
    All the Tak resources are located on my channel, including the Discord server, how to play online, etc.
    One point to make: The scoring is actually just "if you win, you win." The scoring system you described is a variant rule and... isn't really used in any of the tournaments.

    Fun fact: the 5x5 board shown off early in this video can also be used as a 6x6 board; if you use the dots at the corners as the spaces, as opposed to the squares.

    I was just talking to my brother about this game the other day (He's the one who shared this video with me).
    A couple years ago we both played this game at a game convention. I completely forgot about it since then, until a few weeks ago when I got the second book in the series (In which they initially play Tak). I had to tell him that I owned the book in which the obscure game we played years ago was from. Needless to say it took him a minute to figure our what I talking about.
    I absolutely love the Kingkiller Chronicles, it's definitely my favorite series ever.

      @SimmonTak 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Absolutely! I love bringing it out to play in public. People often approach and ask what the game is. Covid put a damper on that, though, and most of my play has been online in the past couple years.

  • @tsawy6
    @tsawy6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I really loved Tak! I used to play it with a friend, and the strategies we built up got very interesting! Like, obviously two people sitting together aren't going to delve the theory deeply enough to compare a game to something like Chess. But. It did still start to feel a little similar. The moves that you have generate a radical, chaotic number of possibilities, just like chess, and that it's generated from 3 pieces and two types of move is really sick to me.
    Our favourites were the 4x4 and the 5x5. Anything bigger than the 5x5 starts to place a really huge cognitive load keeping track of everything. We never bought the second set you need for the 8x8 on a chessboard! The 4x4 has a charming minimalism to it, which works pretty well. The capstone not being there makes a ton of sense to me, it's way too centralising in a smaller board, and walls (which have a great deal of subtlety and generate a lot of strategy themselves. They don't advance your position, but help you control your other pieces, especially cuz they go on top of other stacks) would become pretty useless.
    It's actually the only non-standard boardgame I've ever played in any serious capacity, diving into the strategy. Perhaps obviously, we chose this one because we were fans of the books.

    For real, 2 of the best books ever written. But with the series unfinished, it's hard to recommend to others knowing the pain of the unfinished story.

    • @Adderkleet
      @Adderkleet 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Honestly, the second book was enough for me to not recommend the series. I like the world, I like the characters (mostly), but there's too many threads and too much "suddenly, I became poor - again".
      Book 1 should have ended with him leaving college (just remove a couple of "so then I got in a fight with Ambrose/Joffrey/Malfoy" chapters), and book 2 could skip the lower-city part (or at least trim it down, please, Jesus...). Maybe remove ONE of the love-interest "so then I had sex" arcs. So we might be able to get to one of the actual points established (like encountering Bast, or getting the lockless box to someone that knows Rill, or getting expelled, or finding SOMETHING about the mystery of the Amyr).

    Omg they made a game based on the Kingkiller Chronicles? That’s pretty cool

    • @Pxtl
      @Pxtl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rothfuss and Ernest had actually already been working together - he made a set of Kingkiller themed cards for "Pears" which was meant to be an alternative to the standard 52 card deck but with asymmetric card counts for games where having 1 of 1 card and 10 of another card makes sense.
      Rothfuss, on Tak:
      “Tak is supposed to be my world’s version of Chess or Go or Mancala,” I said. “I can’t ask you to make a game like that. It’s like saying, ‘you know those games that have stood the test of time for hundreds or thousands of years? The best games ever? Do that, but in my world.’ So first off, it’s unreasonable for me to ask. Secondly, you can’t do it. No one can. And thirdly, if you did somehow manage to pull if off, nobody would give a shit. We’re living in the golden age of board games right now. Nobody cares about strategy games like chess anymore.”
      (If you haven’t already noticed, I can be a curmudgeonly fucker at times.)
      “Just let me try,” James said. “Let me take a run at it. If you hate what I come up with, we’ll never speak of it again.”

      The online community is super active! We have tournaments running basically all the time. We even have a tournament specifically for beginners starting in a couple weeks. Registration will open in a couple days. Check the links on my channel for all the resources! You should check it out. It's a blast.

    You're such a good reviewer of abstract games. Do you have a video ranking them? I'll go look. Your opinion would be valuable to me. I'm attracted to Yinsh, but would like to know how you feel it stacks up with the best. Thx!
