  • This building was originally an ice house, then rehabbed into a restaurant/pool hall. The walls were lined with sawdust contributing to the fast spread of the fire.

One of my favorite biker dives. There was no stopping it. I was told, being an ice house, the walls were insulated with hay.

Believe it or not that's just part of the original building that was there.

Really sad. As a kid growing up in the 70's, I lived on Edgewater Drive. We used to stop by the Ice House on the way home from our bus stop on Rathburn St for a bag of peanuts and a soda after school. Everyone there was so friendly to us kids. We also played bingo in the Hall on Bingo Night. It was a great spot for our little neck of the woods.

My department responded to a small structure fire some years ago. Turned out to be a pump house about 10 x 12 that had 6" rough cut lumber walls that were stuffed with sawdust for insulation. It was an absolute nightmare to put out. Once that sawdust ignited it burned like gasoline. Actually had to completely disassemble the structure to finally get it extinguished.

No reason those guys couldn't move their car to save them !

They tried to move them. But as you can see at 1:28 that cop on his Hitleresque power trip refused to let them move the cars. But I'm sure he personally bought them new cars as a way of apologizing for the damage he did.

@Richard Johnson: Did you just invoke Godwin's Law?
I guess he had the order to remove any unnecessary people from the scene. Having to ask back might undermine his authority, or he could not get through to his superior.

Well, I guess I probably did but it was not intentional. :-)

I don’t see an interior attack...that means this was already a surround and drown....total loss.

can't believe they were even allowed to operate in a building like that...fire hazard all the way round...

In these old coastal states, you'll find a lot of old antique stores, restaurants and such in old original buildings like this. There was never ANY HOPE of saving this structure no matter how much water they poured on it or how many firefighters were there! Part of the "charm" of these old buildings is that they are usually 200 plus years old and historically significant to the area. I have to say though, sawdust as insulation is just the stupidest fucking thing I've ever heard!! Valiant effort, sorry to the owner!

No interior attack means that this was already a surround and drown. That means FFs surround it and spray water on it to prevent embers from escaping....there’s no point in endangering their lives to save a building that couldn’t be saved.

Much of my family are veterans. I suppose that is why, when I watched several firefighters move up on foot along one side of the truck, I thought of troops moving into position along the side of a tank or other armored vehicle... Some men fight with lead and others with water.

....this as it turns out was a good thing.....the building is a death trap....by the way....what county actually would allow this to be an occupied public space ??....that is insane stuff.....rehabbed you say .....bs

Just listen to the hysteria in the voices--over-matched, helpless, confused, and scared-silly. Says all we need to hear about Amerika's slob fire services--pure mayhem.
