    This song came out in 1967....right before my boyfriend, at the time, had to ship out for Viet Nam. He was 19 and I was 17...can you imagine the amount of tears I shed listening to this song?? Although me, and that guy, haven't seen each other in 45 years, this song still brings tears to my eyes! Thank you for the memories...love you two!

    "Leaving On a Jet Plane" written by John Denver (Cass was joking, she did not write the song) was a number one hit for Peter Paul and Mary in 1969. John Denver also did a duet with Olivia Newton-John, "Fly Away" in 1975. There's a video on TH-cam with John and Olivia together singing "The Flower That Shattered the Stone" that is beautiful.

  • @ManicSalamander
    @ManicSalamander 2 ปีที่แล้ว +40

    This is Cass' best scenario- singing harmony to someone else's lead. Her voice is so huge, so atmospheric, that it elevates everyone else's voice. She can sing really loud without drowning anyone out. They are both equally sweet sounding, too. Magic. Oh wait. You just said that. :)
    I also want to point out that behind that freewheeling hippie vibe, she is an absolute pro. Her pitch is so accurate. And look how she chooses her distance from the mic every second, to get the mix right. She knows how to steal the stage with a glance, and she knows how to support the lead like a warm fire. Don't you wish she would look at you like that? She has her game DOWN!

    The sound of fingerpicking a good 12-string acoustic guitar is a beautiful thing as John demonstrates wonderfully here. Younger people today may not realize just how good acoustic guitars actually sound because these days everybody plays one through a pickup which frankly makes them sound like crap compared to one you hear through a microphone. It's a world of difference and you can tell how good it really is just by listening to this.

      Just some background for you-the Viet Nam war ( 1965-1973) became a highly contested involvement as the goals were obscure, the "acts" of war including the coffins returning with the bodies of the killed military, were on the TV news every night. You should lookup the Viet Nam War in protests in America. Over 58,000 were killed in that war of 8 years. FIFTY- EIGHT + THOUSAND. When young men turned 18 years old, it was mandated that they sign up with The Draft Board ( military), and many of those 58,000 killed came from being drafted into the services. While "Leaving in a Jet Plane" was not written about the young men leaving for war, it became the anthem for it. Despite all the violent protest against the war,it did not look like much would change with the same politicians in office. So a very vigorous "get out the vote" effort began among those wanting the war to end in an attempt to vote out those politicians who supported the war, and Cass Elliot was part of that effort. THAT is what they are diplomatically talking about here.
      Try listening to the song again , but this time from the perspective that it is a young man leaving to go to war ( Viet Nam) and I suspect you will cry a bit as we Boomers do...
      PS Many groups/singers/folk singers incorporated anti- war sentiment in their music

    I used to live in Denver Colorado and went to Aspen for the weekend back in 1996 and went to a little bar and John Denver was there, few people in the bar so I went up to him thinking he would just blow me off, he smiled asked my name, then introduced himself and said it's a pleasure to meet you, we talked for about an hour and he is just as down to earth and as kind as you might think of him being, he thanked me and said goodbye and left.. the bartender told me he came there all the time and at that point in his life he had a drinking problem, but who hasn't had some very low points in their lives so I definitely didn't judge him, it was about a year later he died while piloting his airplane... what a blessing it was to have meet him...RIP John Denver...

    This song will always have a special place in my heart. When I was in the boy scouts in the early 90s, I went on a week-long canoeing trip with my troop on a river in Michigan. Each night, we would set up camp wherever we stopped. On the 3rd day, we came across a group of girls around our age who were on a canoeing trip as well, so we all decided to canoe together. For three nights they would come by and sit around our campfire and have hot dogs and smores. We would all just sit around and talk for a few hours. When it was time for them to go back to their site, they would sing this song to us. It was one of the most beautiful sounds I have ever heard. Keep in mind, everyone there had just made it to puberty, so crushes were formed. I still think about those days from time to time, and just how magical it was. It was one of the best summers I have ever had.

    Cass Eliott had that quality that emphasized the song above all. If it called for you to be a soloist you give it your all. If it called for you to blend harmonies you ramp it down and blend. Having sung some a capella Bach chorales I know how hard that can be and what a skill it is. Cass and John seem to do it effortlessly. From experience I know that ease comes from tons of practise. Two masters of their craft!

    Went to a John Denver concert back in the late 70s. What an awesome performer that dude was. The voice of an Angel in every song, and funnier that shot too. R.I.P John, you are still missed.

      I wish I could have seen John Denver live. I remember John Denver being criticized by some ignorant people because he didn't fit into any particular music genre. John Denver didn't need to fit into any particular genre. People loved John Denver for just being himself.

    The joke Cass says about "letting" Denver sing "her" song is that he is the actual author. This song is famously covered by Peter, Paul, and Mary. You should check that version. They change a couple lines as Mary is the lead singer of their amazing cover.
    +1 for the comments below about how the song makes us cry. Both of these artists were taken from us to soon. I still remember hearing on that day that John died flying his experimental plane (he was alone).
    Cass Elliot passed away in her sleep in 1974 from a heart attack. The night before she passed she called Michelle Philips (of the Mommas and Poppas) to tell her that she had just sold out two shows in London performing as Cass Elliot and got standing ovations both nights. Michelle is quoted as saying that Elliot "... died a very happy woman".

    "Leaving on a Jet Plane" is one of my five or so favorite pop songs. And the lyrics are so poignant when you consider the Vietnam War was raging when Cass and John Denver performed this version. I love this duet, but my favorite version is that by Peter, Paul & Mary.

    • @waynesimpson4081
      @waynesimpson4081 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes; despite the song not being about the war, it culturally resonated at the time as being about soldiers heading to Vietnam. Similarly "Mother and Child Reunion" by Paul Simon and even "I Can See Clearly Now" by Johnny Nash took on the zeitgeist of the Vietnam Era.

    I was 7 years old when this aired. No.. I didnt watch it, as I was probably in bed. But when I discovered it, it honestly touched my soul. I had always loved Cass. I vividly remember her singing on a show that was filmed outside, singing "Make Your Own Kinda Music". I immediately fell in love with her, as deeply as any small child could. When this song started, the room darkened around me, and I was pulled in to mesmerized distraction. Playing it over and over again until I began to sing along. Nobody will EVER sing like Cass Elliot. Nobody will ever sing like John Denver.
