John Denver was something special. I especially love everything he did with Jim Henson, he was one of those guests who treated the Muppets like living people and it made for great shows. John Denver and the Muppets Christmas special is unironically my favorite Christmas album
So glad you guys got to check this out! Cass was being funny saying she wrote this song, it was actually written by John Denver but the best known version is by the folk trio Peter, Paul & Mary. You should definitely check out their version for comparison. PP&M is another rabbit hole for you. Also check out their songs Blowing I the Wind, 500 Miles, If I Had a Hammer and of course…Puff the Magic Dragon.
"Leaving On a Jet Plane" written by John Denver (Cass was joking, she did not write the song) was a number one hit for Peter Paul and Mary in 1969. John Denver also did a duet with Olivia Newton-John, "Fly Away" in 1975. There's a video on TH-cam with John and Olivia together singing "The Flower That Shattered the Stone" that is beautiful.
This was a huge song huge song that’s why they all clapped as soon as he started singing it. I also want to say it makes me so happy to see people discovering songs that I’ve heard hundreds of times easily hundreds of times and love it just as much so long after it was a hit on the charts.
Bingo! John wrote the song, but Peter, Paul and Mary had the bigger hit with it, I think. But his version sold a lot too. So Cass is making a little joke.
Mama Cass could harmonize with almost anyone. I love listening to her. And John Denver was a amazing guitar player and had one of the greatest voices. Not to mention his song writing talent.
This is Cass' best scenario- singing harmony to someone else's lead. Her voice is so huge, so atmospheric, that it elevates everyone else's voice. She can sing really loud without drowning anyone out. They are both equally sweet sounding, too. Magic. Oh wait. You just said that. :) I also want to point out that behind that freewheeling hippie vibe, she is an absolute pro. Her pitch is so accurate. And look how she chooses her distance from the mic every second, to get the mix right. She knows how to steal the stage with a glance, and she knows how to support the lead like a warm fire. Don't you wish she would look at you like that? She has her game DOWN!
And she carefully shapes her tone for amazing blend, watching John's face intently to ensure consonants are in perfect time and vowel swells move hand-in-hand.
When I was locked down on the table receiving radiation treatments for cancer, I would close my eyes and sing this song in my head to calm myself down. It was about the only thing that mentally got me through the treatments.
SUNSHINE ON MY SHOULDERS and THANK GOD, I'M A COUNTRY BOY are two songs from John Denver that will leave you with both sides of your warm toast buttered. John always had a good attitude and warm feeling for his audience and gave them the best that he had. A genuine talent of warmth that is sorely missed today.
The sound of fingerpicking a good 12-string acoustic guitar is a beautiful thing as John demonstrates wonderfully here. Younger people today may not realize just how good acoustic guitars actually sound because these days everybody plays one through a pickup which frankly makes them sound like crap compared to one you hear through a microphone. It's a world of difference and you can tell how good it really is just by listening to this.
Just some background for you-the Viet Nam war ( 1965-1973) became a highly contested involvement as the goals were obscure, the "acts" of war including the coffins returning with the bodies of the killed military, were on the TV news every night. You should lookup the Viet Nam War in protests in America. Over 58,000 were killed in that war of 8 years. FIFTY- EIGHT + THOUSAND. When young men turned 18 years old, it was mandated that they sign up with The Draft Board ( military), and many of those 58,000 killed came from being drafted into the services. While "Leaving in a Jet Plane" was not written about the young men leaving for war, it became the anthem for it. Despite all the violent protest against the war,it did not look like much would change with the same politicians in office. So a very vigorous "get out the vote" effort began among those wanting the war to end in an attempt to vote out those politicians who supported the war, and Cass Elliot was part of that effort. THAT is what they are diplomatically talking about here. Try listening to the song again , but this time from the perspective that it is a young man leaving to go to war ( Viet Nam) and I suspect you will cry a bit as we Boomers do... PS Many groups/singers/folk singers incorporated anti- war sentiment in their music
My aunt who I loved dearly and rarely got to see, when ever she would come visit, she would take me by the hand, lead my to my bedroom, pick up my guitar and sing this song to me, she knew I loved this song so much as a child (pre-teen) She died only a few years later from lung cancer, and so this song has always stuck with me! This song will FOREVER be in my heart and always make me think of my beloved aunt!!! She was such a kind and pure soul!!!
I used to live in Denver Colorado and went to Aspen for the weekend back in 1996 and went to a little bar and John Denver was there, few people in the bar so I went up to him thinking he would just blow me off, he smiled asked my name, then introduced himself and said it's a pleasure to meet you, we talked for about an hour and he is just as down to earth and as kind as you might think of him being, he thanked me and said goodbye and left.. the bartender told me he came there all the time and at that point in his life he had a drinking problem, but who hasn't had some very low points in their lives so I definitely didn't judge him, it was about a year later he died while piloting his airplane... what a blessing it was to have meet him...RIP John Denver...
This song will always have a special place in my heart. When I was in the boy scouts in the early 90s, I went on a week-long canoeing trip with my troop on a river in Michigan. Each night, we would set up camp wherever we stopped. On the 3rd day, we came across a group of girls around our age who were on a canoeing trip as well, so we all decided to canoe together. For three nights they would come by and sit around our campfire and have hot dogs and smores. We would all just sit around and talk for a few hours. When it was time for them to go back to their site, they would sing this song to us. It was one of the most beautiful sounds I have ever heard. Keep in mind, everyone there had just made it to puberty, so crushes were formed. I still think about those days from time to time, and just how magical it was. It was one of the best summers I have ever had.
John Denver wrote this and was originally recorded by folk music trio Peter, Paul and Mary They also recorded Bob Dylan’s Blowin’ in the Wind and Don’t Think Twice. Love the blend of Cass’s and John’s voices here.
I find the voice of John Denver to be almost mystical. To me, He is the only artist that make me feel like that. When I hear his voice, instantly I have strong aerial feelings of peace, comforting light and positivity.
Producers spend time adding harmonies like this to songs, and Cass and John do it perfectly live, every time!! Just magical. Everytime I hear this I get goosebumps!
They clapped 4 notes in because this was a huge hit for Peter, Paul & Mary. John Denver was known as much for being a songwriter as a singer so most people there probably knew he wrote it. Cass Elliot solos: "New World Coming"; "Dream a Little Dream of Me"; "Make Your Own Kind of Music".
Cass did lots of duets thanks to all the singers with variety shows and tv specials back in the late 60s/early 70s. My personal favorites are ones she did with Julie Andrews (famous for Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music fyi) There's one medley they do of Simon and Garfunkel songs and another of Cass's solo hits. She also sang with Tom Jones, Johnny Cash, Broadway star Joel Grey, Ray Charles.
Cass Eliott had that quality that emphasized the song above all. If it called for you to be a soloist you give it your all. If it called for you to blend harmonies you ramp it down and blend. Having sung some a capella Bach chorales I know how hard that can be and what a skill it is. Cass and John seem to do it effortlessly. From experience I know that ease comes from tons of practise. Two masters of their craft!
I was going to point this out. Not nearly as well as you have here, but she was a consummate professional performer and mastered her incredible voice as her instrument. I have always adored her.
Two things: 1) this song was written by John Deutschendorf Jr. , AKA: John Denver. 2) When "J" said, "1972. This song was recorded before my mama was born" I nearly fell off the sofa. I was in high school when this was recorded. I feel so old! LOL Thank you J and Amber for this channel! I truly love it and love you! Merry Christmas!
I was a few months away from finishing high school, had just signed up to join the Army and go fight in Vietnam. (The Australian Army stopped sending troops to Vietnam before I finished my training, so I didn't end up going). I'm typing this on my 65th birthday.
Earlier this year, I spent 4 months working 1000 miles from home. As I headed to the gate to fly out, I looked back at my wife and this song hit me like a ton of bricks. Thank you for this amazing song, John Dutchendorf (AKA John Denver)
One of the best songs ever.. John Denver was such a wonderful singer/songwriter.. just amazing. Love this video, lost them both too soon 😢 Do listen to Peter, Paul and Mary sing this.. they recorded it first before John Denver was famous though he wrote it. Talk about butter.. you'll sink into them singing. Your kids would love Puff The Magic Dragon by them also!
What always makes me smile about these live performances that were from back in that era it really shows the talent. Its done on the best equipment of the day but they were songs that were written by great writers and there is no autotune used during these live performances its their voices you hear.
Went to a John Denver concert back in the late 70s. What an awesome performer that dude was. The voice of an Angel in every song, and funnier that shot too. R.I.P John, you are still missed.
I wish I could have seen John Denver live. I remember John Denver being criticized by some ignorant people because he didn't fit into any particular music genre. John Denver didn't need to fit into any particular genre. People loved John Denver for just being himself.
This sog was written as a "good-bye" note from GI's who were being shipped o Viet Nam... telling their loved ones to please don't forget and pray for their safe return
When she said "I'll just wait over her 'til you need me", I would not have let her go anywhere! Stay right here, sing it all with me. Even give her a verse alone.
Always one of my favorites of Cass Elliot is 1968's "Dream a little dream of me". Cass really gets to exercise her spectacular chops. Perfect for "Female Friday". I really love what you bring to the world. You are blessed, and you bless. Thank you.
Cass's remarks on voter registration and voting still apply today. Thank you for including that. love john denver all his music is magical please do more smiles and love
The joke Cass says about "letting" Denver sing "her" song is that he is the actual author. This song is famously covered by Peter, Paul, and Mary. You should check that version. They change a couple lines as Mary is the lead singer of their amazing cover. +1 for the comments below about how the song makes us cry. Both of these artists were taken from us to soon. I still remember hearing on that day that John died flying his experimental plane (he was alone). Cass Elliot passed away in her sleep in 1974 from a heart attack. The night before she passed she called Michelle Philips (of the Mommas and Poppas) to tell her that she had just sold out two shows in London performing as Cass Elliot and got standing ovations both nights. Michelle is quoted as saying that Elliot "... died a very happy woman".
Absolutely one of the most beautiful songs ever written. It launched John Denver's career as a songwriter and it wasn't long before his voice was the one everyone wanted to hear.
I am a huge fan of John Denver. There are so many songs to suggest. Some of my favorites are "Poems, Prayers and Promises", "Sonshine on My Shoulders" are a couple of really good ones I think you'll like.
Cass and John were such incredible talents. John Denver was such a beautiful, spiritual soul with such an open heart and gentle spirit. I cried when he died. I still miss him. He has such a vast and deep catalogue of fantastic music with so, so many big, huge hits you need to dive deep into it.
"Leaving on a Jet Plane" is one of my five or so favorite pop songs. And the lyrics are so poignant when you consider the Vietnam War was raging when Cass and John Denver performed this version. I love this duet, but my favorite version is that by Peter, Paul & Mary.
Yes; despite the song not being about the war, it culturally resonated at the time as being about soldiers heading to Vietnam. Similarly "Mother and Child Reunion" by Paul Simon and even "I Can See Clearly Now" by Johnny Nash took on the zeitgeist of the Vietnam Era.
I've been a fan of John Denver since I was a small boy in the early 70's. But I could never admit it openly. I was sad to hear he died. His songs were campfire songs for me.
So sad how many legends that have passed way too soon. So many great collaborations like this. Just think what might have been if these artists that have passed were still alive today. I know our world would be a better place...
This song is special to so many people. It's beautiful. It touches our hearts every time we hear it. Some of us may even shed a tear or two. Peace to all.
I was 7 years old when this aired. No.. I didnt watch it, as I was probably in bed. But when I discovered it, it honestly touched my soul. I had always loved Cass. I vividly remember her singing on a show that was filmed outside, singing "Make Your Own Kinda Music". I immediately fell in love with her, as deeply as any small child could. When this song started, the room darkened around me, and I was pulled in to mesmerized distraction. Playing it over and over again until I began to sing along. Nobody will EVER sing like Cass Elliot. Nobody will ever sing like John Denver.
I grew up with divorced parents. This was my melancholy song every time I traveled cross country to see my Dad once every year or ever other year. I always looked forward to the trip and felt heartbroken when I had to leave while looking forward to seeing my mother again.
John wrote this one. This brings tears to my eyes... they have the sounds of the angels.. I miss them both so much. RIP John & Cass (she didn't want to be called Mama Cass anymore). It's Christmas time; please play John's "Aspenglow" or "Christmas for Cowboys". Peace.
One thing to note here is how well John plays the guitar live. This picking pattern while singing is nearly flawless. He was very accomplished. Mama Cass sang with a lot of people and had a couple wonderful hits on her own.

I love this too. Olivia Newton John was the same
Two vocalists who can sing, not lip sync. Beautiful performance.
I like how they sing in unison during the pre-chorus, then harmonize the chorus.
I can barely hear her.
@@tammyclay62John Denver was indeed his own music genre. ❤
John Denver is a must in any library. Every car trip should have at least one Denver song to sing loudly as you drive.
This sog was written as a "good-bye" note from GI's who were being shipped o Viet Nam... telling their loved ones to please don't forget and pray for their safe return
Mama Cass had a few solo hits...
'Make Your Own Kind Of Music'
'New World Coming'
'Dream A Little Dream Of Me'
John Denver had a beautiful voice. ❤️🇨🇦🎅🏻🎄🎅🏻🎄
I was 1 year old when this aired. I grew up listening to John Denver.
Mamma Cass left us way too soon.I love her sweet voice and nature. Bless her music and beautiful soul❤❤
The 70s produced so many amazingly talented singers, bands and song writers. Glad to see you reacting to many of them.
This is my wife's all time favorite singer, any John Denver song and she stops whatever she is doing just to listen.
It was sad times when we lost these two wonderful singers! They both had beautiful voices and their harmony together was fantastic!
Your take on Mama Cass adding superior quality to the vocals of others is spot on.
Wow, Cass was a prophetic voice for this very day!
When she said "I'll just wait over her 'til you need me", I would not have let her go anywhere! Stay right here, sing it all with me. Even give her a verse alone.
Awesome duet!! I noticed right away that was literally my 8th birthday -August 19 1972! John and Cass really Rocked!!
I remember when they did this performance on the Midnight Special. Both sing beautifully. John Denver was an American treasure.
The artistry is sublime. No computer enhancements, just pure talent and genius.
If you don't love Mama Cass you have no heart. She had such a beautiful heart. awesome reaction.
A pair so perfect as to bring a tear to the eye
John Denver was such a good and wholesome guy. A tremendous talent in an all around good guy who loves life and everybody around him.
John Denver was a bastion of talent...Timeless songs ...
Always one of my favorites of Cass Elliot is 1968's "Dream a little dream of me". Cass really gets to exercise her spectacular chops. Perfect for "Female Friday". I really love what you bring to the world. You are blessed, and you bless. Thank you.
2 of the finest singers of all time
Everyone applauded because this is an iconic song by Peter, Paul, and Mary.
He did write the song.
Cass's remarks on voter registration and voting still apply today. Thank you for including that. love john denver all his music is magical please do more smiles and love
It's great that Cass took credit for writing this song! But John Denver wrote it and he went along with the gag!
Is it about going off to Vietnam?
Sad fact about John Denver he wrote the end route insane so many songs about airplanes and yet he died in a plane crash. So sad.
Mama Cass had such beautiful tone. She could harmonize with anyone and it would be pure beauty. ❤
I love these vids it literally makes my day so much better 🦕
I think these guys have one of the most wholesome channels on TH-cam. For reasons i don't understand, it makes me happy to see them happy.
I’m blue I wish this channels will die ba da bo dee dab o dah
Just listening to John Denver's guitar, with his wonderful voice & the amazing Mama Cass with her beautiful voice. Simple yet so perfect!
I like you guys you're so cheerful!
Absolutely one of the most beautiful songs ever written. It launched John Denver's career as a songwriter and it wasn't long before his voice was the one everyone wanted to hear.
Two of the greatest folk singers of all time working together at something they truly love.
I am a huge fan of John Denver. There are so many songs to suggest. Some of my favorites are "Poems, Prayers and Promises", "Sonshine on My Shoulders" are a couple of really good ones I think you'll like.
Two beautiful souls doing beautiful things.
Cass and John were such incredible talents. John Denver was such a beautiful, spiritual soul with such an open heart and gentle spirit. I cried when he died. I still miss him. He has such a vast and deep catalogue of fantastic music with so, so many big, huge hits you need to dive deep into it.
I cried to he was such a meaningful voice and he's not such a gentle person he had a rough life but there's a lot of redemption in his story amen
Cass could sing harmony with anyone. Here their two voices are wonderful together!
The John Denver Wildlife concert is really fantastic as well.
I've been a fan of John Denver since I was a small boy in the early 70's. But I could never admit it openly. I was sad to hear he died. His songs were campfire songs for me.
From what I remember Mama Cass was funny she had a good sense of humor even about herself and her own weight. Two legends gone but not forgotten
So sad how many legends that have passed way too soon. So many great collaborations like this. Just think what might have been if these artists that have passed were still alive today. I know our world would be a better place...
Yes! These two souls would have shared so much light with the world.
John was the voice of my high school generation. God bless him
This song is special to so many people. It's beautiful. It touches our hearts every time we hear it. Some of us may even shed a tear or two. Peace to all.
I adore John. I saw him live once. Incredible. Play this Ole guitar 🎸. And goodbye again
Interesting fact about this song is that although John Denver wrote the song it was originally performed by Peter, Paul & Mary
Sweet Cass Elliot and John Denver.... I remember hearing this song as a young boy....❤
John wrote this one. This brings tears to my eyes... they have the sounds of the angels.. I miss them both so much. RIP John & Cass (she didn't want to be called Mama Cass anymore). It's Christmas time; please play John's "Aspenglow" or "Christmas for Cowboys". Peace.
One of the most favorite songs played in Vietnam on Armed Forces Radio. John's brother was in Vietnam while John was in D.C. protesting it.
One thing to note here is how well John plays the guitar live. This picking pattern while singing is nearly flawless. He was very accomplished. Mama Cass sang with a lot of people and had a couple wonderful hits on her own.
