There have been numerous highly competent people running for president in the past thirty years. Your brand of political cynicism is popular these days, but it often comes with a very unrealistic idea of how democracy works - collaboration and compromise between people in power who simply need to be well-informed, respect expertise, diplomatic and intelligent enough to distinguish fact from fiction.
I both highly agree, and highly disagree.
If we’re just talking the last 10 years, or even the last 20, we have had either presidents that are far too emotional, to the point of affirming radicalism, or presidents that compromise to such a degree, they become party-puppets rather than autonomous, well-educated leaders that draw upon their studies. They’re too forged by political status rather than actual progress, though that’s not their fault as individuals. That’s more of an issue with populist politics, as well as political nepotism/traditionalism. Prior to that though, I would agree. Nixon just had bad luck when he was caught, otherwise, he was actually a fairly regular and fairly positive president. Not super forward-thinking, but a very solid leader. Post-Nixon was basically.... fairly strong all the way up to the end of the 90s, though Reagan set some fairly frightening precedents in terms of populism over efficacy. And Bush Jr. not always as bad as people say, but still mostly poor, especially in regards to the precedent set in how interventionism is conducted, how we handle oil shortages, and implementing the start of a Surveillance State. Obama did not help in that regard. Trump and Biden have ultimately ignored the Surveillance issue, keeping focus away from it. As for their issues of choice, admittedly, they had brought light to issues like immigration and gun violence, but I’m not sure if they really had very strong reforms in that regard. Immigration reform will be a long , gradual, and arduous process, so we’ll have to wait and see on that.
On the other hand, gun rights, in the public space, has very weak discussions. Moreover, abortion is strangely lacking right now in terms of grounded conversations that are rational and runs too much on emotion, and no president ever seems to address this.
That’s a massive problem that somewhat has marred every presidency though. Pathos over Logos in rhetoric. It’s just becoming worse with time.

Great video. I gotta say, I understand where Teddy was coming from in 1912 though, and I don't think it was entirely ego driven. Conservation was the "baby" of his presidency and Taft completely abandoned him there. Roosevelt had called it the single most important issue and created multiple national parks, established the U.S. Forest Service, created bird refuges, and set aside millions of acres of land to be federally protected. He's pretty much the sole reason the west wasn't completely torn down by timber companies. Taft promised TR that he would keep up his legacy here and protect federal land, but then completely abandoned his promise and began selling this land off to for-profit companies. Roosevelt was (understandably) pissed and couln't believe that the guy he had hand-picked as his successor would betray him like that. So while it's unfortunate that TR running led to Wilson's election, I blame Taft much more than Roosevelt. Teddy was just trying to protect his legacy and ensure that his work wasn't all for nothing.
Why don't we ever listen to what presidents warn about in their farewell addresses? Washington warned against political parties, Eisenhower warned against the military industrial complex.
To be fair, political parties probably do more good than harm, since it's usually an indication that candidates are actually trying to compete with each other to keep their party in power instead of making false promises and disregarding public opinion. I actually think one of the major causes of Mexico's problems come from the fact that there's really only one major political party there.
I agree, however, that the military industrial complex has become problematic. I don't think it's as simple as divesting funds into other sectors, since there are so many jobs and foreign relations that depend on the American military, but I do think the economy would likely improve if some of that money went into healthcare and/or education.
And Reagan warned against communism
and Clinton allegedly not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky.
Well that’s only two farewell addresses, but your point is still taken
and let's not forget about Jimmy Carter's warnings against fanny packs and MC Hammer pants... so eerily prescient.

I believe every single American high school student should do this exercise. It's essential to understand history and your own views.
Should be in civics classes.
No they probably shouldn’t. To make an informed pick you’d have to know what each candidate stood for and that would mean spending a disproportionate amount of time educating children about the views and ideology of figures who aren’t that important in a high school level education. This would be an exercise better suited to college level studies as I don’t think high school students need to know every single losing candidate to every single election.
@@thevaultofwisdom1242 I agree with this, You could make an entire college course out of this idea, however I think it would be a good exercise for high school students in a limited capacity however, choose one or two elections per marking period (9 weeks at my high school) and do those. I think it would of been a really cool idea for my AP US history class in high school.
Roosevelt might have entered the war sooner. Wilson passed many useful reforms and had more planned. Charles Evans Hughes would have been more level headed on foreign policy.
Wilson was certainly racist but so was most of society. Hughes wanted fairer treatment for Afro Americans but certainly didn't regard them as equals.

Hey, I voted for you in 1988
I'm glad you went for Stevenson in 1956. In that election he was vastly underrated. He was looking to the future--Ending A-bomb testing, lowering the U.S./U.S.S.R. tension, universal income. De4spite the warning Ike gave four years later, he just watched the military/industrial complex grow and grow.
Plus Ike, like Truman, was a proponent of Domino theory and American foreign intervention which, at the very least, caused the grow of the very same military industrial complex he spoke against.
Would you consider doing a video on the best candidates who LOST the Presidency (and never won at a later election) and what were their proposals? Thomas Dewey, Adlai Stevenson, George Clinton, etc. ?
Yes!
My personal picks: Walter Mondale, William Jennings Bryan, Adlai Stevenson, Henry Clay, Bob Dole, Wendell Willkie, John Fremont and Daniel Webster.
And for ppl who lost in the primaries: Robert Kennedy, Eugene Mcarthy, Ron Paul, Rand Paul, Tulsi Gabbard, Andrew Yang, Jesse Jackson, Al Smith,
I wanted Ronald to win all 50 states but I would feel kind of Feel bad for Mondale Or anyone that doesn’t win a state.

For me, the biggest what-could-have-beens (Besides the obvious Lincoln serving out his full term) are Garfield not being assassinated, and Henry Wallace staying FDR's Vice President and taking over when he died.
i always wondered what a Wallace presidency would be like
Chad Henry Wallace > virgin incel George Wallace
I disagree. Truman was an amazing president and Wallace, while he would have been a good president domestically, was extremely naive to the threat of the Soviet Union. He would not have stood up to them the way he would need to. Wallace even admitted this himself later in his life that he was foolishly optimistic on the soviets.
Henry Wallace ❤
I would’ve voted for Theodore Roosevelt both in 1904 and 1912! That dude was awesome!
Ross perot was a very interesting candidate, he was pro choice, he wanted more gun control including an assault weapon ban and he wanted to raise taxes on the rich, and he was still considered to be the most conservative candidate in the 92 election by many people it's a stark contrast to american politics today.
Perot didn't just want to raise taxes on the rich. He proposed increasing the federal tax on gasoline by a whopping 50 cents per gallon. Hence, he wanted to increase taxes on everyone.
I liked how you always called Bob Dole 'Bob Dole' just like Bob Dole always does.

The first time I ever voted was for Jimmy Carter in 1976 (I was 19 years old). I had grown up in the South in a fairly conservative Christian home; but had become increasingly liberal in college. Carter really inspired me in 1976 - he was a strong evangelical Christian with a centrist economic approach and a progressive social and foreign policy agenda. He inherited stagflation and an energy crisis from his Republican predecessors, along with a disillusioned populace suffering from both the post-watergate and post-Vietnam War syndrome. Simply put, he was elected President at a very difficult moment in history. But the economy DID improve under Carter, and he had some major foreign policy accomplishments - from the Panama Canal Treaty to the Camp David Peace Accords. He helped to positively transform the image of the US in the eyes of the world with his unprecedented emphasis on human rights rather than the Machiavellian dirty tricks of previous Cold War administrations. He was a breath of fresh air.
Don't forget that Carter got Gen. Zia to assassinate Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Pakistan's first and only democratically elected Prime Minister. How Christian of him!

Exactly, and it’s for the same reasons that some people disliked him. but they’ll say it’s because he handled the Iranian hostage crisis poorly. Definitely onne of the most humble and morally upstanding Presidents we’ve ever had.
I don't know Mr. Beat if you notice a trend here? We always freaking vote for the opposite party when things are going wrong. I think as voters we need to be more disciplined... we keep messing it up for ourselves and always voting for what appears to be a good choice but never ends up being so. Maybe we should have stuck it out with Carter or Ford instead of switching parties because people are getting upset over inflation. Since I'm not well studied in these subjects I just call out that trend I notice and see how we all ended up in a more difficult situation than we started.

Ulysses S. Grant truly is one of the more underrated Presidents. What I feel is important to mention here that wasn’t, was the fact that the Lost Cause crushed much of Grant’s legacy and notoriety. For someone so monumental in American history, his place in it is largely forgotten.
He oversaw the most corrupt presidency in US history, and this corruption directly led to several market crashes and economic crises.

People shouldn't mistake the Republican and Democratic parties of the 19th century to the republicans and Democrats in the 21st century. They're ideologies changed within that time frame and the Democrats went from pro-slavery/pro-states' rights to anti-slavery/democracy/pro-diversity today. The republicans went from anti-slavery to pro-slavery or what would be considered pro-slavery, pro-oppression and antisemitic/fascists they seem to be for today. It's pretty pitiful. We should all be pro-diverse, pro-democracy/ and antisemitic no matter what party you belong to. Wendell Willkie was a very underrated guy.
He was staunchly anti-Hitler and an interventionist already in 1940, he was much more progressive on civil rights than FDR and pledged to end segregation in DC (in 1942 he would also come publicly in favor of ending segregation in the armed forces), he criticized both parties for not doing enough about civil rights for African-Americans, later he indirectly criticized FDR for the internment camps by stating that " war is no excuse for depriving groups of people of their rights", he went against antisemitism and those who blamed the Jews for the war, and there is definitely much more one could say about him.
