Good to see this. Just purchased a Red Sea Reefer XL 300 G2 and a ton of other stuff from BRS this week. Thanks for these videos, they really help the people that might be just starting in the hobby, all the way to us experts.
Take my advice!! 5 gallons of rodi mixed with Red Sea coral pro salt. Get dr tims one and only, dump it in the bucket. Put in a wave maker, a heater at 78 degrees, and drop quite a few pellets in the bucket. Then, put in ceramic media. I just buy tidal’s 110 ceramic media bag. After you do this, let it sit for around a week. After this, you’re ready to start up the tank. Use aragalive, fill with rodi Red Sea coral pro. Put in the ceramic media, drop a little more food in. Cut your lights on from day 1 how they’re gonna be set, and dose vibrant only once. Consistency is key. After this just run your tests, throw in some fish and coral and be amazed at how the ugly stage is nothing more than a small diatom bloom 7 weeks in and it’s gone within a week and you never have issues again. (As long as you have a good clean up crew and good algae eaters)
Hello Ryan and BRS team. Amasing content. This is the best Reef related series ever. When the Biome series is over, please ad a dark cure/cycle recommendation video. 👍
Hey Ryan, did you notice the Cirolanid Pods attached to the clowns tails/body in the live gulf rock tank? I was able to see one in the week 2/3 video. They are parasitic pods that latch onto the fish. I know this cause my gulf live rock came with tons of them but seemed to disappear after the addition of wrasses. Just wanted to see if you had noticed this too. With biome diversity in mind, I added gulf live rock, Tampa bay saltwater, and sand from a LFS out of a 10 year reef tank. I certainly have “pests” and I’m about 3 months in but nothing unsolvable. Some hair algea, red cyano and surprisingly, sea lettuce “ulvaceae” is dominating the rocks. Love this series, just wishing it came a few months ago!!!
I also ordered from TBS and luckily I QT'ed my rock first.. I noticed them at night with a flashlight. I have seen a few threads on Reef2reef of others with the same
I haven’t seen on any of these videos some control factors. Did these start with a quick start bacteria? Are regular water changes being performed or just as needed with testing? I’m setting up a new reef this weekend as soon as my order is delivered from brs!!
yes to all. They started off every single tank with a bottle of "Dr Tims: One and Only" Bacteria starter(standard practice now in the reefing community), blacked out every tank for 4 weeks to starve out photosynthetic algae, then turned on the lights to SPS PAR zone for 4 weeks, then upped the light intensity to LPS PAR zone for an additional 4 more weeks totaling 12 weeks. at the very end they intentionally introduced to every tank, a slurry of nasty algae collected from every tank to see if the now established tanks could combat the intentional introduction of algae into the system and waited about 7 months after that for final results. every tank was a Red Sea Reefer 170 and every tank had 2 clowns, and im fairly certain every single light was the same. in the full length 1 hour presentation at Reefapalooza they mentioned that at a minimum they did ONLY regular water changes (to avoid tank neglect) while never disturbing any surface of the tank surfaces, and I'm pretty sure they scraped the glass for filming purposes. (i watched the full 1 hour 15 minute presentation, it was a very good watch. take notes)

You guys really do great things for the hobby

Thank you for making these videos, they are very interesting and provide great depth.
Amazing stuff!
Are these being reposted?
so what is the culmination of all these tests? which tank setup method fared the best and is recommended?
Exactly. WHAT IS THE RECOMMENDATION!!!!!
@BRStv did you do water changes during the cycle?

An episode with biom cycling microbe lift bacteria products vs living plankton would be awesome.
Please do it again with the light on since the beginning for life rocks
I wonder if the lights weren't put off 4 weeks if the live rock wouldn't have done better?

Were these tanks cycled through the nitrogen cycle before the experiment started?
Ryan, do you sell live rock from the ocean?
That "gulf live rock" was from Salty Bottom Reef Company.
You should have tested for Ammonia, niterie and nitrate for a complete study!!!
Live Rock - no thanks!
And who is the winner?
Thank you BRS your videos are always the goto. My stream twitch.tv/ramsreef is made possible by you. Thank you for always sharing your knowledge.
