    Greg Austin, great job my friend! Rule based content with great video clips for visual learners. As a trainer, I can confidently recommend your channel to my officials knowing they will get solid rule/case based information to make them better officials. Keep doing what you do and if you ever need clips, let me know and I'll help if I can.

    4:45 play one. If you rule the intentional foul is after the shot is released, does the offended team get to run the end line on the throw in after the free throws?

    Greg, just was browsing an old video (if you remember) when the incorrect call was made on the shooter fumbling the ball on his shot. You did state "legal play" but what can he do once recovering the ball while it was in the air? 2nd: what can a player do if the ball hits the floor before he gets possession? Thanks

  • @KevinSmith-vz7xh

    So on the second play, say we had called the travel (and YES he did travel. pivoted off the right foot, and replanted it), then it becomes an Intentional Technical or a Flagrant Tech correct?

  • @detroitrockcity8
    @detroitrockcity8 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Play 5- I think you’re reading into the “throwing the player down” after the first dunk, too much. The airborne player must be able to return to the floor unimpeded and quite frankly, this should have been an And 1. Body contact and arm contact from primary and secondary defenders. This would have ended it. On player 5, this is a flagrant with intent to injure, automatic ejection. Signed, sealed and delivered.

      Totally agree. Also, if you called the and-one, you should also call the illegal contact on the dribbler before he lost the ball. Apparently the players can't handle the physicality which the refs allowed.

    Nice video, very good reminders!
    I really like how you always remind everyone to slow down and ensure everyone is on the same page. Especially on plays like these. I know that feeling of wanting to get to the table to report asap. I always have to remind myself that there is no rush. The game isn't going to start without you, haha.
    For play #5... Would you gather the coaches to let them know what was called if it ended up being a flagrant foul?

    • @BetterOfficials
      @BetterOfficials  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I could certainly see gathering coaches to explain the ruling, though it's not really a complicated ruling. If we had foul, dead ball technical, coach technical or some other sort of layered play, then definitely. Since this is a 'one event' situation probably not necessary, although I do encourage officials to get 'reps' at bringing coaches together, so that when the shit really hits the fan we are practiced.

  • @KevinSmith-vz7xh
    @KevinSmith-vz7xh 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Last play probably is a Flagrant Tech and an ejection. COrrect in that the officials need to get together, send the players to their benches and get that correct.

    On Play 1, red player made a basket, red 5 and white 30 on a rebounding action. So, in this case, is it count the basket, intentional foul on red 5, two free throws awarded to white team, plus ball position to the point of interruption or no basket, intentional foul on red 5, awarded two free throws awarded to white team plus ball possession?

    • @BetterOfficials
      @BetterOfficials  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You must make a judgement (as a crew) as to whether the try for goal had been released (out of the hand) prior to the foul. Remember, continuous motion only applies to defensive fouls.
      In this case, ball is gone, so score the goal and administer the intentional foul.

  • @andrewmojzer2337
    @andrewmojzer2337 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    On play 2, why disregard travelling if you are 100% certain it occurred before the hard foul? And if you do call travelling, what ruling, if any, should be given to the excessive contact?

    • @jeffwright7587
      @jeffwright7587 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought about that too, but the thing is, you aren't allowed to have contact like that at any time, no matter what preceded it. You can't just clock a guy right after he commits a violation, right? So, if you want to call the travel on Red #5, fine, but then you have a dead ball technical foul on White #21 immediately afterwards. It's a dead ball because of the travel, but the resulting penalty will be similar (although not exactly the same): Red gets two free throws (by ANY player or sub) with the lane cleared, then Red ball out of bounds at the division line.
      If the travel is not called, then this is a live ball intentional foul on White 21, so the penalty would be two free throws for Red #5 with the lane cleared, then Red ball out of bounds near where the foul occurred (endline next to lane line).
      I suppose the biggest difference between calling the travel or not is the fact that White #21 ends up with a technical if you say there was a travel first--that's worse for him than just an intentional foul because if he gets another T later in the game, he is DQ'd.
      Greg, what say you?

  • @shanejones8884
    @shanejones8884 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Greg,
    Can you correct some confusion for me? Say A1 undercuts B1 going up for a dunk. So A1 is charged with an intentional foul. B1 gets up stares him down calls him a wimp but uses NSFW language and A1 taunts B1 in the midst of this. Is A1 disqualified? It might have changed since I played (I don’t have this problem coaching my 7th graders). I thought if you accrued a player technical foul and an intentional foul you were disqualified. Can you clarify?

    • @BetterOfficials
      @BetterOfficials  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A little confused by your text. Addressing the last part, no, accrual of multiple of these fouls does not mean disqualification.
      4 intentional fouls would not.
      1 technical & 2 intentionals would not
      2 technicals would
      1 flagrant would.

      @@BetterOfficials Ball becomes dead once it passes through the ring, and does not become live again until it is at the disposal of the thrower. So, the correct call would be a (dead ball) technical foul on Black 20--2 shots for White with the lane cleared, then White ball at the division line.

      In determining the answer to your first part of your question, when does the ball become dead? Does this contact occur as a live ball or dead ball?

    • @bradwilliams6691
      @bradwilliams6691 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1.) ball becomes dead after a made basket, so you would have a dead ball technical foul. (2.) In high school, there is no flagrant foul, it's either a technical or an intentional. those are our only options. if he had thrown a punch, then you would have an ejection. this is just a really hard foul w/ excessive contact, so you would go intentional.

      I disagree. Go back and watch again. Watch the left heel (light green shoes)

    On the point of foul, with play 3? Should it be an intentional foul, if the coach is telling his players to foul? The coach should know his players knowing how the player may be fouled.Eexperienced or not? kid in white could have knocked his head on the floor.

    • @BetterOfficials
      @BetterOfficials  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Joseph,
      End of game fouling is an accepted part of high school basketball. The execution by this player was poor.
      Case play 4.19.3 SITUATION D:
      Late in the fourth quarter Team B is trailing by six points. Team B's head coach begins to yell to his or her players to "foul, foul, foul!" B1 responds by
      (a) grabbing A1 from behind, or
      (b) reaching for the ball but illegally contacting A1 on the arm.
      RULING: In
      (a), an intentional foul shall be ruled. In
      (b), a common foul shall be ruled as B1 was making a legitimate attempt to "play the ball."
      COMMENT: Fouling near the end of a game is an acceptable coaching and playing strategy. Officials must determine if a foul is intentional by judging the fouling act itself, not whether or not the coach instructed a player to perform the act.

      Okay, I repeated it three times in the video. What was the phrase used to describe what the penalty is? the part with the asterisk in it.
      My goal in doing so was to make that an automatic response because that is always the penalty. With one little exception and that's what the asterisk was. So any scenario you could describe be a three-point shooter excessive contact on him and the ball goes in what's the result use the phrase that I ordered three times offensive player swings and elbow intentionally and hits the defender what's the penalty? Use that phrase it's always the answer
