Outside, playing with your friends, in the sunshine, birds singing, squirrels running around, beautiful manicured grass (that you didn’t have to work on), drinking and smoking cigars...don’t care if I shoot a buck twenty...thanks Matt! Your channel is the best!
It doesn’t matter if you make a double eagle, double bogey, or double par. On the next shot your only thought should be ‘where’s my target’. That’s how the great ones do it. I’ve had lots of practice recovering from blow up holes.
Great vlog. Really good tips. I've seen my friend throw clubs, break them over his knee, even an entire set into the lake. 🤣.. I hate that because it usually effects my game as well. Sometimes funny to watch, but never has positive results. Never! This video should help so many people get through those holes. Good work Matt.
Love your channel you have improved my game a lot. I’m a new golfer starting at the age of 44 and have only been playing for a year. I have followed your videos and drills including five stroke challenge. I have dropped 27 strokes off my game. Your channel and teaching is the best. Thank you.
Great advice, I learned how to do similar things years ago since blow up holes were a guarantee. I was happy to finally get out this year and shoot 83, +13 after a Birdie on hole 1. Managed 2 more birdies also. Thanks again for the tips.
I am very new to golf. I went to the driving range and enjoyed it and then went a couple more times and thought "i wanna try the real thing" after one round i am now hooked lol. There is something so satisfying about hitting a great shot. The game is so hard that it makes the one in 20 great shots i hit feel amazing.
A very good video! My first hole today was a bit of a blow up, but I let it go, actually laughing in the bunker at myself ”playing around” with the ball until I got it up on the green at my fourth try! I thought that everything is going better from now on, and it did. I`m going to recommend this video to all hottempered golfers I know 😂🏌🏼♀️
Dude!!! I watched this a few days ago, got out to the course today. 1st hole is a short, easy pat 5 that I duffed 2 chips on and got an 8. I remembered this video, moved on and birdied 2 and 3. Ended up with a third birdie on the front 9 and shot 38. Ended up 84 for the day, which is a great round for me.
Great tips! Here's something I do that could be of help to others out there. I play my rounds based on the number of pars (or better) I make. So a double par - is still just "one hole" out of my entire 18. At the end of the round, I count how many pars (or better) I made - if it's 14/18 - that's a solid round for me. Sure, I may not have broken 80 - because of that double par - but the chances of me making a double par happens probably once every 15 - 20 rounds- so it shouldn't really bother me as I treat it as a fluke. So even after the blow out, it doesn't affect me so much as for me, it's just another hole where I missed making par.
I'm sure you've probably covered this but I'm going to ask anyway. I loved the uphill/downhill lies video. That one paid of right away. Great info. My question has a similar scenario: chipping downhill lies? A very awkward address. I'm lost at setup. Which loft works best? Your videos have completely changed my golf game. I went from 100s to mid 80s overnight. I'm going to break 80 this year. I appreciate what you do.
Great video, and advice. Really helped me think differently about my bad score on some holes. I cant wait to get back on the course later this week and put it in to practice.
Great advice Matt! I watch all of your videos and next to never comment. But the timing on this is like you put this out for me specifically for me haha. I took a 9 on number 3 yesterday in a $ match and allowed myself to steam for 90 seconds and forced myself to move on! Long story short scrambled to scratch out bogeys on the next 3... didn’t get whiny just plotted along and waited to hit that 1 turn around shot which finally came on 7 with a beautiful 3 wood from 270 on in 2 with a 18’ eagle putt made. And from there went +2 to salvage the round had a blast with the fellas and even won the $$$. I refuse to ever be that guy who throws his clubs, screaming obscenities, and ruin the round for everyone else. Nobody has higher expectations for themselves but me but it’s golf bruther! We all have good shots bad shots and everything else between. Life’s too short to be that dude!!
“Deal with your character”. A much neglected golf lesson these days! 50 years ago when my grandfather was teaching me how to play golf, if I lost my temper on the course, he would make me quit the round we were playing and walk back to the clubhouse by myself...I learned quick that it was unacceptable.
great tip for most of us to think about. i usually have at least 2 bad horrible holes a round. it's tough to get over and past them to enjoy the rest of the time out on the course.
was playing with my buddy and we both had a terrible first two holes and we laughed about it and grinded through the rest of the round. We turned the rest of the round into a competition to keep us focused and still playing seriously. Playing match play made it easier to forget about the early blowup holes.
Great tips. I know I’ve shaved strokes since watching your channel. Too many videos on the swing and not enough on strategy and short game out there. I’d like to know how you find courses where people aren’t pushing from behind? I thought I may have been on the right track by trying to play more shots and not worry about being behind in the score. This week that paid off. I scored two 7’s on the first two holes came back to beat my partners and win some skins. That never happened before.
I have been watching you for 5 months now and learn something all the time. I remember waiting on hole 1 and the group on the tee had a guy that shanked one into the woods. He threw his club and blurted out a few choice words. I thought to myself, this is going to be a long day for him…
This video is exactly what I needed. Every round Ill have 15 out of 18 holes where I'm 1 over or 2 over and then I'll have 2 doubles and a triple which kill my score. I always shoot around 80 but if I got rid of those bad holes, I could be low to mid 70s
I feel so much better knowing Matt had an 11 :) I only had a 9 the other day. And after an truly incredible drive on the par 5, I pulled my second shot into the woods (+1 lost ball), 4th into a bunker, then approach short, then bad chip and 3 putts, tada!
Any tips on not thinking about the fact that your about to shoot your lowest score, as you tee off on the 18th? It seems like i blow up, and end up with a triple on the last par 5........please help me Matt.
Thanks for the great advice... appreciate it. I get down and pissed at myself.... will put this into my brain and use it. Great work Matt.... you’re definitely the best guy on internet!
Yeah i get what your saying about the remembering the goodI had a hole the other day where I hit my drive barely 80 yards was so mad but focused up hit my hybrid great then hit a PW from 100 yards out and got the backspin i needed and ball rolled into the cup and that is what I went to bed remembering heck I wont ever forget that shot
Two of the things the gentleman who taught me How to Play told me: 1) The biggest cause of Double Bogey is trying to "Save Birdie" from a "Bad Place"! 2) "If you're Hitting the Same Club for the Third Time in a Row, you're probably In Trouble!" As for Throwing Clubs, I like Tommy Bolt's advice, "Always throw the club down the fairway, that way you don't have to walk backwards to get it!"
Learning to manage the Six inches between your ears, IMHO, is one of the big challenges we face in golf. An athletic chess game that involves both athletics & mental abilities to play the game vs brute force. Thanks for sharing
It's like an 8 is always waiting to pounce, but that's par 5's and it doesn't take much. Net double bogey on a hole where you get a handicap stroke means the most you can take is 3 over par ? Still sucks but I'd pick up long before it got to 11 unless it's a tournament.
In the playoff of our golf league I was subbing after my team got eliminated the week before and I shot a 44 with a 13 on a par 5...got stuck under the lip on a bunker and it was brutal to get out, tried to hit a hero shot and made it worse way worse. Gotta shake it off and then play next hole...I parred out from that hole on. Par 36. We lost by 1 and to this day even though my partner shot a 46 he blames me lol. I'm like listen man I parred out from that hole still you took bogeys.
All of it. Lol. I started golf a year ago, so everything equaly sucks. Maybe ill play 2 shots well but miss a green, take 2 chips and 3 putts to hole out, or sometimes i just randomly slice one and lose a ball, get on in 5 and 2 putt. I average 50% fairways in reg, 20% greens in reg, 36 putts, and 5 penalty strokes. But all thats average from the data i collected on grint app. It says i average a 108, but i have dropped 2 strokes from my handicapp this month. Down to a 28.5 from 31.6.
@@MilesMartinGolf I started last month and I suck at being just outside the green. I mess up my chip shots BAD! I'm better when my tee shot lands far from the hole and then I land it better with an iron
@@lv5310 try to learn the distance you hit each club, then play the hole backwards mathematically. So for instance, if you hit your 8 iron 140 realy well, play a tee shot that gets you to 140. I've been playing for almost 2 years and my average round consists of about 11 pars, 2 birdies, 3 bogeys, and 2 triples lol. I always mess up 2 holes every round
Same with me. I rarely break 90 but am an A golfer in 3 different scramble leagues , lol. It’s because playing my own score Ill always have at least 1 blow up hole .
Working on this hard this year. Had a 1 shot lead going into the last day of our club championship last year. Bounced a pure 5 iron off the back of a green out of bounds and ended up making triple 😭. Fought back pretty well but lost by a shot. Need to learn to accept it as it was a great shot just a bad break but it ruined my day. I need to be better at realizing I can’t control everything.
Matt, you blew up your whole round before you even teed-off! You have 28 clubs (2 bags) on your cart with just you playing! You can only carry 14 boss! 😜 Great video! Keep 'em coming!
I guess it depends on your confidence / skill level. If you are trying to break 90 and you get a blow up hole(s), it affects you. So, the temptation is to analyze to prevent. How can I prevent in the future to reach the goal. I suppose that could be a rabbit hole.
Many times after having a bad hole or two and finishing the round ..... I’d tally my score and say.... you know what? If I’d just bared down the next few holes I could have had a reasonable round? Bad hole..... move on....That changed my game. 👍
Yesterday i hit like four or five shots from the super long stuff and never got the ball to go further than 4 feet the last two shots were just me swinging my club at the grass with one hand around the ball.
Did exactly this the other day. Took an 11 on the second. Playing 5 off the tee with two lost balls. Followed it with a near chip in, two pars and birdie 🤷♂️
If you’re mad, just calm down! I should have thought of that. 😂 You move on from a bad hole, approach the next hole positively and still have another blow up hole, so then you try and move on again….. You go down to a shorter club off the tee and try to play your Fairway Finder and still end up shankng that into the woods…. I don’t care how zen anyone thinks they are, they’re getting upset. The only REAL cure to moving on from a blow up hole is playing better. It’s so easy to look like you have it figured out when you’re playing well. Of course we shouldn’t be having outbursts, etc. But that’s why it’s called anger management, we can only manage the anger, we can’t prevent it. I don’t know a single golfer who cares about playing well who is able to keep a completely positive mindset when they’re not playing well.
I call those my Charlie Brown holes. I probably have 2 holes a round that have me saying "GOOD GRIEF! *&%$#@!" 😃 One is usually the first hole, since I don't usually warm up, and the other generally follows a string of decent, confidence building holes. These remind me I shouldn't quit my day job in pursuit of a tour card! Thanks for the tips, Mr. SG!
Hahahaha. Never take anything more than a snowman. We're not pro's, you get all the Mulligan's you want. Laugh at it, and remember there's always someone else trimming trees too. Great video Matt 👍. Stay safe, hit em straight.
My father in law was one of the best golfer I have ever played with. On the rare occasion he hit a bad shot, he would crack up like someone told him a great shot, while I would fume for hours about that one bad shot. Guess who always came back the winner??
My biggest tip: shoot the shots you’re comfortable with and you know you can hit. If you have a bad hole, there is no need to make things more difficult on yourself. Don’t use clubs you aren’t feeling that day. Don’t hit shots you don’t think you can hit. Simplify things, rebuild confidence, and turn your round around.
What works for me is just thinking this a game, I don't do this for money so put on my big boy pants and move on to the next hole. Practice your shots and chill out! Yes it's annoying but be grateful you survived a pandemic and you are able to hit a ball.
i carded an 8 and on the 2nd hole, easiest hole on that course and never did that b4, hate that. worst feeling cause you have 7 to go instead of the last. (a 9 hole course)
A lesson from the first tee program. Msg you left out the major downer for players who are in a group where a player has a b/u hole; namely, a stream of expletives like a drunken sailor; of course those types of golfers generally don't need a blow up hole to demonstrate their advanced street vocabulary.
been there... I tell Samantha all the time to ignore score until the end... just focus on shot shape... she plays better when I keep score and hide the card from her... of course she beats me regularly... ugh... stay well !
This happened to me last week on the 16th. Two balls in the water. I was so rattled that I made it worse by choosing a terrible strategy for my recovery shot. I’ve never made a drop onto a worse piece of ground ever and I actually made an 11 too! Oh dear 🤷🏻♂️🤣
I always think about the terrible, vile things I’ve called myself after bad shots or holes. Then I think, when in the world would I let anyone else talk to me like that?
Not sure why people get angry and throw clubs, you wouldn't kick your TV if it lost signal. Or damage your car if you staled it :D Just enjoy been on the course regardless of score.
You know you have a problem if you are on the golf course, blow up a hole and have to drive home to take a nap. Maybe find a new hobby? Lol. Great advice and if you cannot have fun, why bother? It’s just a game...and since 99.9% of us don’t make a living at it....IJS...;)

Isn’t the stroke limit double the par eg par 3 max 6 triple bogey.
Hahahaha. Never take anything more than a snowman. We're not pro's, you get all the Mulligan's you want. Laugh at it, and remember there's always someone else trimming trees too. Great video Matt 👍. Stay safe, hit em straight.
When u coming to Long Island
“Swinging out of your boots.” LOL do you know me?
This happens to me a lot! I go 3 or 4 over par first 9 then have a triple somewhere in the back nine and double bogey the rest of the way.... Fml
I dont think you understand how fast I clicked. Yesterday I had a beautiful par and double par'd the next hole
really true...deal with your character. how do you handle adversity
Anybody know where he’s playing?
To avoid shooting more than 9 on par 5s, play stableford and pickup your ball...
What if every hole is a blow up hole? I’m running low on clubs.
Fore right ⛳!
I'm gonna miss greens, I'm gonna hit it into bunkers, and such... Oh that's my normal round... lol
Courses like Braemar, I bring balls I don't mind losing. LOL Either that, or play courses where it is hard to lose a ball.
I feel attacked 😂
I always think about the terrible, vile things I’ve called myself after bad shots or holes. Then I think, when in the world would I let anyone else talk to me like that?
Not sure why people get angry and throw clubs, you wouldn't kick your TV if it lost signal. Or damage your car if you staled it :D
Just enjoy been on the course regardless of score.
Too bad every hole is a blow up hole lol!! Great advice time to get out there again 😬
10 shot max on my course
In golf....the only shot that matters is the next one!
rather have that on 9 or 18 rather than the 1st.
You know you have a problem if you are on the golf course, blow up a hole and have to drive home to take a nap. Maybe find a new hobby? Lol. Great advice and if you cannot have fun, why bother? It’s just a game...and since 99.9% of us don’t make a living at it....IJS...;)
Luckily an 11 has never happened to me I have started with a triple bogey and that sucks🤬
A picket fence on the first hole (thumbprint)? Shit, I'd walk off the course, pay another green fee and start over again!
It’s not cheating if you quit and start again on the first tee box
Put me down for a 5
I usually just use an eraser 😅
Keep score as match play. An 11 is no different than a 5.
11? Par 4? 8 stroke max
Brb nap
I prefer the temper tantrum method.
Then throw the card in the trash and enjoy yourself
