  • Dark Apprentice is second book filler of the worst kind. Han and Lando play sabacc for ownership of the Falcon THREE TIMES! That was not a typo. (But on the plus side, Leia actually does something this go-around.)

I would give anything to replace the twins' scenes with more scenes of the academy

the back and forth between Han and Lando was tiresome. I loved Jedi Search but Dark Apprentice was a big let down. here’s to hoping book 3 lands better for me.
edit: agree with mostly all of your points on this unfortunately. clunky is a great way to describe this book.

I really dislike this book. First of why is the Academy getting barely any focus? This is the Jedi Academy Trilogy not whatever pointless subplots Anderson thought about. Second, those pointless subplots are just repeats from TTT (the solo children getting kidnapped, Ackbar getting framed) that add nothing to the stories. Third, the villains all feel like their from a Saturday Morning Cartoon. Fourth, Gantoris and Kyp’s turn to the dark side is way to abrupt and Kyp’s a Gary Stu, doesn’t matter if he had Exar Kun’s help. Lastly everyone is out of character, in the last book at least Han and Lando felt in character but know Han’s an immature idiot who cares more about his ship than his wife and Lando’s a creep (who should stay away from Mara). All in all a really bad book.

It's interesting how little we saw of the actual teaching/learning in the Jedi Academy--what do the students do with their time? Does Luke have lesson plans, or is everything unstructured? He fades into the background in Dark Apprentice and Champions of the Force, which I found odd.

All I remember from what lessons they showed is exercises in sensing nature, and Holocron story time. I can kinda see why Kyp got fed up with it!

This. All of this is exactly why I consider it one of the worst star wars books.

If you haven't read "Dark Disciple", I highly recommend it (similar title, which is what lead me here). Apart from a few chapters in the middle (which take place on Dathomir), I thoroughly enjoyed it. Apparently, it was supposed to be part of the original 6th season of "The Clone Wars" which was much abbreviated when Lucas sold the company to Disney. It's a shame, because I think it would've been an outstanding story to have played out in that series. I believe it was slotted for 8 episodes.

Is that the book about Asajj Ventress and Quinlan Vos? I have it on my TBR list, but I will bump it up higher!

@@MegReviews Yes. I never heard about it until I stumbled across a video of the unfinished episodes of The Clone Wars. In it, Dave Filoni was showing clips at a convention of rough animation for a sequence from the beginning of that story. A while later I heard that someone actually wrote a book about it after the show was cancelled. Just on the basis of what I saw in the clip, I promptly purchased the book.
Like I said, there were parts I didn't like (that's the case with practically everything), but the parts I did like were incredible IMO. And I think the author did a great job catching the essence of both Vos and Ventress.
If you plan to read it, avoid anything about it online, as spoilers abound. I would even avoid anything about Quinlan Vos and Asajj Ventress, to keep from accidentally having it spoiled.

That book really annoyed me with how they handled Asajj. She deserved a much better story.
