He wrote AND directed this? Wow. This brother is gifted. AL stand up! The satire blaxploitation tones were intense and damn near distracting initially. But in the end the social messaging weaved in was quite powerful.
Really enjoyed the film, as a cinephile I didn’t recognize the director’s name so I looked him up and was extremely shocked that it was his directorial debut. An amazing script, excellent cinematography, and brilliant performances. The style and tone of the film felt so unique, perfectly balancing multiple genres without one overshadowing the other and using inspiration from popular films in black American culture. Felt like Friday, Stranger Things, and a Jordan Peele film all in one. Will definitely be on the look out for any future films by Juel Taylor, hope his career takes off. 🔥💯🙏🏽
Cinematography was great because the DP is great. Juel wrote the script and it shows because the story is terrible. John Boyega's performance is the only good performance
@@JasonWilliams-um2nt Well I’d argue that the story is objectively good. In filmmaking and storytelling you can follow the story structure that’s shown in a film, with a beginning, middle and end. There's a setup, where you introduce the characters and the situation, then add a challenge or problem; the confrontation, where the challenges increase; and the resolution, where the story builds to a climax. This film accomplishes all these aspects in its story structure. However I don’t intend to disregard your criticism of the story because it’s arguably a filmmakers job to come as close as possible to objective goodness in order to connect with audiences. Unfortunately they failed in that regarding you as an audience member. I agree that the cinematography was great because of the DP, but I also believe because of Juel, given the fact that he’s still the director and most likely told the DP where to shoot, established a mood for lighting, etc. A director oversees the overall composition of each scene and how it fits into the final film so although the DP is extremely talented I don’t think the shots would be as good if not for the director. In regard to the performances I’d agree to disagree seeing as how the whole basis around an actors performance revolves around the audience seeing the characters. I did but obviously you didn’t for those 2 characters. John Boyega’s performance definitely stood out the most to me, probably because the character seemed so far from who he is in reality. I’m sorry you didn’t experience the film, story, and characters like most did. I’d be very interested to hear any additional critiques you have about the film in more detail (if you felt like it), especially pertaining to the story. Did you feel there were any plot holes?
@@godtaughtme467 I'm well aware of story structure in film. There's the introduction, the inciting incident, the climax then resolution. All films establish this smh. Some do it good, some do it bad. This film did it terribly.
@@godtaughtme467 Boyega's performance stood out to you, probably because his character seemed far away from who he is in reality? That's exactly why his performance was good. That's exactly what makes a good performance. If a real life preacher plays a preacher in a movie no one is gonna call that a good performance. Jesus fkn christ
a directorial debut and you get Jaimie Foxx is absolutely nuts on top of John Boyega and Teyonah Parris is just... wow. looking forward to his other projects because if this is where he's starting lol
I’m so glad they let him have his own creative freedom. The confidence he exudes. That’s why it feels like he’s been doing this forever. I don’t know about y’all, but I cried a little bit only because this is so inspiring. He kind of stumbled into it lol my God. ❤❤❤❤
Inspired and motivated. And thoroughly entertained- even with the soundtrack. I saved that to my library. Shoutout to those friends who believed in you and pushed you.
Holy shit this dude is amazing! Why aren't more people talking about this guy? He needs to work with Jordan Peele and Donald Glover asap! Cmon now this man is pure talent.
He has an extremely bright future because this film does NOT seem like a first-timers direction. Exquisite movie.
😂😂😂😂😂😂 this movie was terrible
@JasonWilliams-um2nt don't see the point in your hot take but ok?
@@TheReelRapNerd lol it's a bad movie. Did you get that?
@@JasonWilliams-um2nt lol I get ya bud 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@JasonWilliams-um2nt why was it bad?
As an artist myself, I would think he's been doing this forever. Dude cranked out a masterpiece.

It’s cool he went from Co-Writing Creed II and Space Jam 2 to Co-Writing/Directing They Cloned Tyrone. Knocked it outta the park too 👏🏽

A damn near flawless debut!!! I hope Netflix gives it a limited theatrical run, because it'd be amazing to see this on the big screen.
