Been looking for a series like this for a while, because so many channels put out great videos of shooting at some of the more exclusive grounds and reviewing £20,000 guns, which as I said are great..... but I'm still learning the difference between 12 gauge and 20 gauge. I’m really new to shooting but I’ve definitely caught the bug so am going to have some lessons in the new year. These videos are great for explaining simply some of the basics that I haven’t understood when going on experience days so thank you! I’d love to know more about initial gun selection, there’s a lot of options out there and you can end up spending a lot of money so it’d be helpful to know what you think is necessary for a novice and what is more of a nice to have/ for when you’re more experienced.
Great advice Lloyd, it mirrored what the coach at my local club was teaching my boy earlier today, especially the gun mount ( head on stock into the shoulder ) Even an old dog like me is learning new tricks from your vids, keep em coming.

Nicely done! Tips for every beginner indeed. These kind of tips should be given to every beginning shooter when arriving for a first time at a school even if it is a company festivity.
Ten tips: 1) Practice gun mount at home using a laser in the barrel of the shotgun 2) Practice footwork and swing at home 3) If possible shoot with both eyes open 4) Soft focus at distant...the eyes focus on the target quicker that way 5) Repeat at each station until success. 6) Shoot singles with success. For example, in skeet start by shooting singles at all incoming targets. 7) Practice consistent look point, hold point, kill area 8) Focus small...try to focus on a dime sized area of the leading edge of the clay 9) Keep head on stock and follow thru. 10) Practice follow thru by swinging to broken piece of clay.

Glad you mentioned stance etc . its frustrating when i see someone having lessons etc and the instructor never shows them how to stand .Its basic stuff but very important at the same time .And that gun looks amazing in the sun ,

Great video LIoyd for beginners, I've been shooting since I was a nipper started with air rifles then on to a bit of game,now clay shooting,I agree with you I was taught to touch your cheek,use your body like a coiled Spring,hold point etc etc...you take care sir and stay safe..
Good information for beginners its surprising how many people will watch someone doing it wrong and not offer any help. I personally am not the best shot but am touching the 40s out of 50 clays self-taught by watching the best shooters at my clubs. I try help others with their shooting as people get fed up with missing clays and often pack the sport in before they should.
Any instructional shooting video that starts with footwork deserves a thumbs up. As someone who shoots a reasonable amount of clays, following these tips will save you a few hundred shells until your shooting improves. Also, I could listen to that sound of the gun closing for hours 😬.
I was thinking you wouldn't have good cheek contact with your stock with that high collared jacket but it looks good and a great tip I never heard before about face before shoulder on you shot mount.
Loving the vids-as someone looking to get started they are full of great tips and advice. Would be very interested in hearing about first gun selection, and in particular, those on a tight budget. Got me some lessons booked in January, and letter (and their fee) has gone off to my GP...fingers crossed all goes well and i'll be touring gun shops in early 2021 :-)

I started lessons last year at a local club, nothing spectacular or very expensive, but really enjoyed it. I looked around and bought a second hand Miroku 7000 28" Sporter for £700 based solely on how very comfortable it felt in my shoulder, little did I know that I would later have to have the butt extended as I was seeing far too much of the rib. I have not been able to use the new adaption because of C19, but I still practice my gun mount in the mirror as often as I can. Being ex military, my instructor had a real task on his hands trying to de-train me after many years of rifle shooting, I still have to shoot "gun up" and with my left eye closed :) Thank you so much for taking the time and sharing some great tips for us noobs..........
You can spot the ex military lads a mile off when they start out, just the way they hold the gun. 😉 Glad you enjoyed the show, hope you are a subscriber.
Grate set of videos to help people get into the sport maybe you could do one on how to deal with a missfire as I see a few new shooters that don't know what to do and are stood with potentially a live gun
I left misfires out intentionally as I feel like that should be dealt with by whoever is supervising. Newbies shouldn't be in a position to have to deal with that on their own.
Ooof, it very much is an issue but I would bow to others to comment on it. I've coached archery to international level with shooters with eye dominance issues but that's a static target and quite easy to overcome with equipment. Clay shooting is more dynamic and more difficult to sort.

I liked the face then shoulder for mounting, had my first lesson last week and without going into it cross dominance came in to play, closing my right eye just prior to taking the shot did enable me to hit them more than with both eyes open all the time. Any info on eye/ cross eye dominance would be great.

Great information for new shooters, will help them enjoy their first experience so much more. 👍 How about the difference in gun styles for, sporting, skeet, trap, abt and mount, sight pictures for each? Only done some in Thailand, which I'm sure is completely different to the UK haha I got myself a licence and a gun, mainly to motivate me to actually go out and shoot. So can I just show up and shoot? Even being totally inexperienced? I'm waiting to have some lessons before I go out on my own. How do grounds normally charge? per hour, per clay etc.
@@lloydyp I live Bristol way. So have quite a few grounds all within a reasonable area. Have spoken with someone at Lady Wood, but with all these tiers and lockdowns im not sure I will be able to get any lessons yet. A mate of mine shoots, and would come with me. But he's already said he's not an instructor so would be reluctant to teach me lots of bad habits😆 So I wanted to know if I could just turn up with my mate and shoot without lessons. More just to get out the house, as I'm in a wheelchair makes it just that bit more awkward. I've got all the kit, and I've joined BASC, so have insurance as well. Also been around various guns all my life, so very safety conscious.
@@UKReloader just looked at the ladies wood web and the prices look resonable enough. The price per clay for normal shooting will vary wildly based on the location and is generally more expensive Daahn Saarf. As I said though, once you have a licence you can pretty much rock up and shoot anywhere. Probs woth a call before you set off just to see what the craic is when you get there. They will be dealing with new shooters all the time so dont be embarrased to ask for help.
Just getting into clay shooting with my 15yr old son who has become hooked over the past couple of months going every week. We have found your beginner videos so helpful and can relate to every thing you said as newbies. I'm not new to clay shooting, but I have never had any professional tuition, and I find myself at sporting shoots doing really well at 1 stand and then totally destroying my score at the next. can you recommend any good tuition in Ireland or do you think I should go to the UK for a couple of days instruction, when we're over covid, and if so, where would you recommend. thanks. I live in Kilkenny. it's southeast of the country. I've been looking up tuition here through Google, but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot available. like I said, If I thought I could head to the UK for a couple of days at a time and get better results, that would possibly be the route to go. thanks for your time Lloyd.
Hi Lloyd, can you do a video of your opinion on back bored shotguns say 18.7 bore compared to a nominal bored one at 18.4 on long range targets/game with fibre wads? I am just curious really and no one really gives a comparison or a view. Many thanks
Honestly I haven't done any empirical testing but I don't think it makes enough difference that a club shooter needs to worry about it. I have seen monster clays broken with crap cartridges and skeet chokes *if* you put the gun in the right place.
Ah now we are into 2 different problems. Steel shot requires a shot cup, so until someone comes up with an affordable bioplastic you can either shoot fibre OR steel. Steel will shoot just fine in 18.7 bores. Fibre loads lose a little pressure for sure but the new gamebore quadraseal fixes that. Basically the market will come up with a way to make this work for everyone given time so don't worry about it 😉
on some targets I really don't have a clue where I'm missing. I don't know if it's a speed of swing, high or low and high quality one on one tuition is not readily available where I'm living. In short, I'd like to be able to see where I'm missing. I'm a pretty decent shot on quite a few targets, on others, I'm a little bit lost. thanks

Lloyd, could you tell me roughly how much extra it would be to go from an SC1 wood to the SC3 wood you have on yours? I know you were upgraded at Perazzis expense but I'm curious if you know the price difference between the two?
Ive been shooting pretty much all forms of fireams, shotguns, and primitive weapons for 32 years, and in my past I have been a coach (although not in Shotguns), an armorer, and a fireams instructor.
Digging this series! How ever, I don't agree with your advice on tracking the clay from the half way point of travel. A new shooter will have trouble with target acquisition in that short period of time. All instructors I know, teach to follow the clay from the machine. I may add.. If you're sticking with your 18 second intro, you might as well stretch the vid to 10 min. to get that youtube dough! Looking forward to your next vid
I'm afraid we will have to agree to disagree there. You can track the clay with your eyes from where you can effectively see it. If you mount to the trap you have lost before you start.
@@lloydyp When you're an experienced shooter you don't aim the gun, you simply look at the target.. New shooters don't have the muscle memory or the experience of thousands of shots with their weapon
Whilst the visual hold point should be just out of the trap the gun hold point for beginners depends on the type of method being taught. ( swing through , pull away or maintained lead ) Everybody is different but a good generic hold point for beginners is half way between visual hold point and break point. I think Lloyd gave very good advice on this point.
@@simonbennett223 His point was, that there is to much to do. But until you have a substantial amount of training under your belt, you won't have consistant mounting and your shots will be all over the place if you shoot where you look instead of where you aim. So having more time to follow the clay while aiming, will break more clays. As you say, there are many different tecniques. And one doesn't work for all
Outdoor activities are permitted in Tier4 for people within Tier4 areas. e.g Ej Churchill in High Wycombe remain open. I would do some Googling to see if there is local ground still operating near you. Hopefully, you'll find one.

Sorry George, I’m not familiar with any clubs in Cumbria off the top of my head. Best bet is probably to post on a forum or Facebook shooting group, however the quality of response you will get is unfortunately questionable.

Grate set of videos to help people get into the sport maybe you could do one on how to deal with a missfire as I see a few new shooters that don't know what to do and are stood with potentially a live gun
I left misfires out intentionally as I feel like that should be dealt with by whoever is supervising. Newbies shouldn't be in a position to have to deal with that on their own.
Perhaps part 4 could be about eye dominance. You absolutely need to know which eye is dominant so you know which shoulder to put the gun in.
As I have said in the series eye dominance is a deep subject that I can't hope to cover usefully in a video, You need 121 time with a decent coach.

Ooof, it very much is an issue but I would bow to others to comment on it. I've coached archery to international level with shooters with eye dominance issues but that's a static target and quite easy to overcome with equipment. Clay shooting is more dynamic and more difficult to sort.

I liked the face then shoulder for mounting, had my first lesson last week and without going into it cross dominance came in to play, closing my right eye just prior to taking the shot did enable me to hit them more than with both eyes open all the time. Any info on eye/ cross eye dominance would be great.

No been shooting on a Nikon Z6 for over a year now, the light on this day was particularly beautiful though.
The weather did look ideal and showed up that lovely wood nicely :). Are you allowed to shoot while you make the videos? It would’ve been good for a beginner to see you break a couple of clays using the technique demonstrated. Keep up the good work Mr P!
I filmed this during the last lockdown so the ground was closed and there was no one there to throw me any targets. 🤷♂️

I could but every ground is different so it would only be relevant for the grounds I use.

I got myself a licence and a gun, mainly to motivate me to actually go out and shoot. So can I just show up and shoot? Even being totally inexperienced?

Have spoken with someone at Lady Wood, but with all these tiers and lockdowns im not sure I will be able to get any lessons yet.
A mate of mine shoots, and would come with me. But he's already said he's not an instructor so would be reluctant to teach me lots of bad habits😆
So I wanted to know if I could just turn up with my mate and shoot without lessons. More just to get out the house, as I'm in a wheelchair makes it just that bit more awkward.
I've got all the kit, and I've joined BASC, so have insurance as well. Also been around various guns all my life, so very safety conscious.
@@UKReloader just looked at the ladies wood web and the prices look resonable enough. The price per clay for normal shooting will vary wildly based on the location and is generally more expensive Daahn Saarf. As I said though, once you have a licence you can pretty much rock up and shoot anywhere. Probs woth a call before you set off just to see what the craic is when you get there. They will be dealing with new shooters all the time so dont be embarrased to ask for help.
Just getting into clay shooting with my 15yr old son who has become hooked over the past couple of months going every week. This is a complicated subject for beginners but generally start out with a MC and shoot 1/4 and 1/2 or 1/4 & 1/4 you can commit to FC later.

Hi Lloyd, can you do a video of your opinion on back bored shotguns say 18.7 bore compared to a nominal bored one at 18.4 on long range targets/game with fibre wads? I am just curious really and no one really gives a comparison or a view. Many thanks
Honestly I haven't done any empirical testing but I don't think it makes enough difference that a club shooter needs to worry about it. I have seen monster clays broken with crap cartridges and skeet chokes *if* you put the gun in the right place.

Ah now we are into 2 different problems. Steel shot requires a shot cup, so until someone comes up with an affordable bioplastic you can either shoot fibre OR steel. Steel will shoot just fine in 18.7 bores. Fibre loads lose a little pressure for sure but the new gamebore quadraseal fixes that. Basically the market will come up with a way to make this work for everyone given time so don't worry about it 😉

on some targets I really don't have a clue where I'm missing. I don't know if it's a speed of swing, high or low and high quality one on one tuition is not readily available where I'm living. In short, I'd like to be able to see where I'm missing. I'm a pretty decent shot on quite a few targets, on others, I'm a little bit lost. thanks
The first shot should convince people to change or confirm their stance. Slow learners may need two shots.

Lloyd, could you tell me roughly how much extra it would be to go from an SC1 wood to the SC3 wood you have on yours? I know you were upgraded at Perazzis expense but I'm curious if you know the price difference between the two?
About 2 grand at the time. Brexit will have had an effect however.

@@BeatRock253 their standard wood is just standard, and yes there is an SC2. SC2 upgrade is about 400 quid, or it was in 2019.

Ive been shooting pretty much all forms of fireams, shotguns, and primitive weapons for 32 years, and in my past I have been a coach (although not in Shotguns), an armorer, and a fireams instructor.

Tip on clothing selection; dont wear a jacket with a large collar that between the stock and the cheek or face.
NB, it's called a cheek weld for a reason, not a jaw weld, you don't have to freeze if you dress sensibly.
Biggest mistake people make... Seeing the gap in front of the clay and stopping the swing... Equals missed target.
that's why I recommend seeing a coach ;)

How ever, I don't agree with your advice on tracking the clay from the half way point of travel. A new shooter will have trouble with target acquisition in that short period of time. All instructors I know, teach to follow the clay from the machine.
I may add.. If you're sticking with your 18 second intro, you might as well stretch the vid to 10 min. to get that youtube dough!

I'm afraid we will have to agree to disagree there. You can track the clay with your eyes from where you can effectively see it. If you mount to the trap you have lost before you start.
@@lloydyp When you're an experienced shooter you don't aim the gun, you simply look at the target.. New shooters don't have the muscle memory or the experience of thousands of shots with their weapon
Whilst the visual hold point should be just out of the trap the gun hold point for beginners depends on the type of method being taught. ( swing through , pull away or maintained lead ) Everybody is different but a good generic hold point for beginners is half way between visual hold point and break point. I think Lloyd gave very good advice on this point.
@@simonbennett223 His point was, that there is to much to do.
But until you have a substantial amount of training under your belt, you won't have consistant mounting and your shots will be all over the place if you shoot where you look instead of where you aim. So having more time to follow the clay while aiming, will break more clays. As you say, there are many different tecniques. And one doesn't work for all
@@lloydyp agreed. You start at the pickup point where your eyes first start to track the clay, then you pull through to the kill point.

Outdoor activities are permitted in Tier4 for people within Tier4 areas. e.g Ej Churchill in High Wycombe remain open. I would do some Googling to see if there is local ground still operating near you. Hopefully, you'll find one.

I’ve learnt a lot from your content as well as the lanky southerner (Johnny I think his name is ) and the strange looking geezer from Oxford gun club. Can you suggest a good shooting ground in or near Cumbria? I want to do as you suggest and look for a fitted good first gun and instruction
Sorry George, I’m not familiar with any clubs in Cumbria off the top of my head. Best bet is probably to post on a forum or Facebook shooting group, however the quality of response you will get is unfortunately questionable.
