BBH Big Boo's Balcony 0xA 33min Strat

- I collect the star Big Boo's Balcony in BBH using 0 A presses in 33 minutes. Specifically, this strat reduces the total time by 2.5 hours, from 3 hours to half an hour.
Originally, this star was done in 13 hours by raising the scuttlebugs enough to snap them into the bookshelf room ( • BBH Big Boo's Balcony 0xA ). Later, I did it in 3 hours by bouncing on the scuttlebugs and going into a misalignment with the crazy box ( • BBH Big Boo's Balcony ... ). And now, I show an even faster strat, in which I bounce on the scuttlebugs with the crazy box and use a star dance clip to get onto the roof. This strat is similar to the previous strat, except the scuttlebug raising is significantly faster, since it's now done from a single location instead of traveling through doors each iteration.
This video is a follow-up to my previous video in which I showed this strat as a theoretical idea ( • BBH Big Boo's Balcony ... ). The critical issue at the time was that Mario faces towards the camera after the star dance clip, which normally means he'd be facing downhill. Facing downhill causes Mario to enter into a butt slide instead of a stomach slide. Butt slides unavoidably fall off the roof, whereas stomach slides allow Mario to dive as soon as he slides off, letting him get back onto the roof, start frame walking, and get all the way up. So the question became how could we position the camera so that Mario ended up facing uphill on the roof? Ultimately, @brianpso was the one to suggest the solution, which was to land on the roof's non-cardinal edge on the left while having the camera be south-west of it. And so that's what I ended up doing.
Side Note: This is the first time I've used the technique to ascend the mansion lobby's steps 0xA after the steps have already been raised. This was a discovery made by ds273 a year ago ( • SM64 - GLG to BBH 2nd ... ). So thanks to that, I was able to route the 100 coins more efficiently.

I sometimes forget the ABC challenge is still a TAS speedrun and the strats are optimized for time saving.
I think it is especially hard to remember because it never feels like Pannen is competing against someone for the top ranking time. Everyone is working together to solve the problem and most of the time when progress is made, credit is given to multiple people.
@@shufflecat3334yeah the MK TAS comunity is like that, however MK tases are smaller and thus time to do somthing is smaller
I think it's more an issue of, the absurd amount of time it takes for some strats makes it cumbersome to even optimize in the first place. Whenever the whole thing hits zero and gets combined into a full game TAS, having a file that's 300 hours of inputs is just awful to have to work with.
@@FabbrizioPlays 300 hours is honestly low-balling it given some of the strats in ABC.
But yea, if ABC ever does hit 0xA, then the next goal is going to be to get the time as low as possible so you can actually try and show it off by having it all compiled together without it being hundreds of hours long.
@@R8Spike Also part of it is the amount of knowledge in the community. Only a few people actually know enough techniques to work on the ABC, and most of the time they end up specializing on techs. With MK communities, you'll have a fair bit wider community where knowledge can be more easily acquired and contributed to. The most recent MKWii TASBot has 20 direct contributors, while a ABC star will have 6 max and only for really complicated modern techs. ABC is a very different beast
So in a sense, we finally got all the scuttlebugs together for one big jamboree.

Normally when you're playing you'd WANT a butt-slide on the roof so you can jump across easier, but here you want the stomach slide in order to dive-recover near the edge. Fascinating!

The time saves are such a great thing because it will make the full ABC run easier to consume.

There's a good reason why this route wasn't possible before.
In "The History of the A Button Challenge - Part 2: The Pannenkoek Revolution" the historian Bismuth mentions that you can only get 101 coins in 0xA presses, later in "The History of the A Button Challenge - Part 4: Tyler Kehne is a Genius" he discusses two new discoveries: a way to get one more red coin on the first floor bringing the 0xA coin count up to 103, as well as a way to reach the second floor during star 1 of Big Boo's Haunt for an extra 23 coins. Unfortunately selecting star 1 means you can't collect the 25 coins from the boos in the Merry-go-round as the boos only appear on subsequent missions, this means that you can't collect enough coins to spawn the 100-coin star during either mission to make up for the missing coins from the crazy box and 3 scuttlebugs.
Later on February 19th 2021, ds273 discovered that you can reach the second floor of the mansion in all missions using a glitchy ledgegrab allowing for 126 coins to be collected making up for the missing coin differential which makes this route possible.
Bismuth hasn't covered this new discovery, but nevertheless his series on the SM64 ABC is super comprehensive and I highly recommend it!

we finally got the big scuttlebug jamboree we've all been waiting for!
As much as I love seeing a whole A press get removed, I also love these "time save" strats cuz they're often just as much hard work and knowledge of the game
sometimes the time saves are even more impressive then the A button saves. we've come a log way from cloning 40 goombahs to cross a gap
This video gives me hope that even if we reach the point where we can't lower the A press count any more, we'll still always have sick strats for time reduction. Thank you for the amazing content as usual, Pannen and co!

He didn't say it had anything to do with the camera; he said it had to do with which way Mario's facing, just as you'd expect. It's just that in this particular strategy the way Mario gets up there is by collecting the 100-coin star, and the direction Mario faces at the end of that star-collection dance is camera-dependent.
