Sherry Jackson remembers Maverick! Range Rider! Riverboat! Danny Thomas!! A WORD ON WESTERNS

  • With over 100 credits, Sherry Jackson was one of the busiest child actors in Hollywood. On the big screen, she was little Susie Kettle in three of the popular Ma and Pa Kettle films. In "Trouble Along the Way" (1953), young Sherry held her own as John Wayne's precocious daughter. On TV in the 1950s, she worked the early western hits "The Gene Autry Show," "The Roy Rogers Show" and "The Range Rider" starring Jock Mahoney. When told she was too young (at age 10) to marry Jocko, she tried to convince her widowed mother to grab him! Instead, her mother married acclaimed writer/producer/director Montgomery Pittman who wrote episodes of "Maverick," "The Rifleman" and "Riverboat" that featured Sherry as a guest star. During this busy time, Sherry was growing up on camera as "Terry Williams" on "The Danny Thomas Show" (1953-58). Of course, as she got older, her parts became, as she says "sexier." Find out more from Sherry in this revealing A WORD ON WESTERNS interview. Recorded May 15, 2018.

    Sherry was delightfull. Very revealing how movies and TV was accomplished. Rob you are doing a great service to future generations. The notes on the interviews help with searches for some of the movies and stars. Good job Rob and thank you for making my Sunday morning.

    We all grew up with Sherry Jackson and she went from "cute little girl" to this "beautiful woman" on screen. She has a lot of delightful stories about so many of our favorite stars and shows. Love her candor and her crush on Jock Mahoney who women wanted and men wanted to be.

    She was absolutely adorable as a tot and beautiful as a young lady. A lot of talent there and a very tight mouthed actress who never gave away what arrogant bullies both Sheldon Leonard and Danny Thomas were. It was no secret in that town at that time that Danny Thomas expected those around him to kiss his ring as he was the Cardinal of Beverly Hills.... Yeah, right! Nice seeing Ms Jackson once again.

      As a fellow Lebanese-American Maronite it pains me to hear about Thomas' behavior on set. But you need to look at the totality of his life. He did amazing work for sick and disabled children through St. Jude's Hospital in Tennessee. Nobody is perfect.

    SHERRY JACKSON was a terrific and cute child actress and a way sexy adult (no, not porn) actress...
    She gives a straight and salty interview of her career that is very sincere and engaging.
    With writer/director Montgomery Pittman as her step father, I caught her today in an episode from the first season of THE RIFLEMAN, that by chance shows young Johnny Crawford telling a then 16 year-old Sherry she'd make a fine wife for Chuck Connors... kind of like Sherry telling her mother than Jock Mahoney is the one for her. By coincidence, Sherry had worked with Chuck earlier in 1953's TROUBLE ALONG THE WAY, and later in a 1965 episode of BRANDED.
    Sherry Jackson has a great gutsy attitude and a very appealing sense of humor!

    It’s been a long time since I’ve heard the term, “Black Irish”. Hear in the U.S., it was used to denote someone of African-American and European mixed race. That’s why it threw me off with her using it. But, she my have meant it to be in the UK tense, of being Irish but having dark hair and skin as a result of Spanish ancestry. I have a cousin who was born in Dublin, and has dark hair, eyes and skin like a Spaniard but is of 100% Irish origin.

    • @lynnkain
      @lynnkain 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My grandfather always called us “black Dutch”. He would say our ancestors were originally from the Iberian peninsula. More likely it was due to our small stature, dark coloring, working-class status, and being of German extract.
      A put down in his day, he made it his own.

    • @williambilyeu9801

      A lot of the Spanish sailors and soldiers of the Spanish Armada shipwrecked on the Irish coast. They intermarried with the Irish there as both were Catholics and it was impractical to try to return to Spain. It caused a lot of the Irish, who were of strong nordic descent, to have black hair while retaining blue eyes.

    Words, I grew up with a father that couldn't cope with the 20th century, like John Wayne he bashed women then kissed them as they fell in love with this ideal of a man. Suffer with the trauma of this ideal man until old enough to make my own living. It makes me sick to listen to your ideal time in cinema, but I like watching old westerns. Men like you that remissness about a time before cars and electricity, that remissness about the old west don't realise the terror of living with a father that couldn't adjust to the 20th century.
