What pisses me off about Wizards is what Rudy has said a couple times. When they do a Amazon dump, they could easily pass those prices on to distributors instead so LGSs can also get good deals. Wizards would still get the same profit and help out the stores. The fact they don't do this just shows Wizards don't give a damn about stores.
I wish but they would never do that. Not with there current business model. The only bad thing is that it’s going to take years for them to realize and by that time it might be too late to correct their course.
@refundreplay8019 to be fair, it's not really on thr customer to subsidize LGSs for the raw deal they get by wotc. Why pay 10-20% more just cuz? Only if you REALLY want to support the LGS community you frequent. If you are just a player that plays home games, it makes total sense to buy online. It is befuddling to think competitiveness will go up if LGSs go under.
@@joshholmes1372 nah, I fully agree. I have ZERO obligation to pay more for cardboard. I was just confused that the person was saying he wants more tournament play while not caring if small stores go out of business
@@refundreplay While I understand the self sentiment, as a non-MTG player who's just loosely interested in TCG stuff, my understanding is Wizards' creates competitive play in MTG through LGS and having them build out tournament areas while sacrificing their shelf space. Quite literally, the less LGS locations you guys have, the less judges, the less MTG facilities you will have for tournaments, the less TOs you will have because those guys will have other jobs instead of LGS stores totally dedicated to supporting your hobby. Long story short, that one player you know sounds like a sweaty, narrow minded dummy. He wants more tournaments but he doesn't have any empathy if the locations that create the tournaments exist or not. Extremely short sighted, which based on what fans say, is also how WOTC is lol. As a Pokemon TCG fan, I just wish people played the game... Pokemon company doesn't do enough to promote anything beyond selling the cards outside of a major championship.
Happy late birthday. Usually a business loses money 4 months in a year then 6 regulars and 2 good ones. Patience and staying focus is the name of the game. I love the transparency of your videos man.
Since you ordered that much CMM you better get the hook up with wilds. Its looking like a good set and all the magictubers are liking it. Hope wilds helps you out of this hole. Best of luck to you sir. Thanks for being Candid on here. It takes a real man to admit when they made a mistake and to actually share it is on a whole other level.
Enjoy your day too!! It's a learning experience for all of us. And having to meet you in this channel is a gift indeed. Knowledge, lessons learned, perseverance, and down to earth content. Wish you the best for the journey ahead
First happy b-day! If you have a whiteboard, I would highly suggest you use it! It is ok to copy other channels because what they are doing *works*. Good artists borrow, etc. Now if you wanted to evolve it in some way, or showcase info differently maybe using a different surface or layout, I would try that. But being able to layout things clearly like that is part of why Rudy has been successful. Don't shy away from it!
Some video suggestions: show us some video of your store live with customers or players, talk about your monthly sales or deals, the what to do and not do in a trading card store, open packs, thegood the bad and the ugly about running a store, etc...
14:57 happy birthday to you.🎉 try not to work all night and maybe enjoy yourself a little bit. Thanks as always for sharing your views on running a business. Looking forward to our upcoming podcast. 😁
first of all, Happy Birthday. I run a little collectibles shop (games, toys, statues, art, books, comics, tcgs etc) and i completely get your position and sorry to hear about your loss. I havent ever considered in focusing only on a signle thing, my whole life in the collecting hobby was always about diversification and it's been good to me. I didn't order _any_ CMM. I ordered Dominaria Remastered (luckily sold through before the 50% drop), Brother's War, LOTR. I really only stock what i like myself personally. I've had some complaints from local MTGers but i dont really care. I buy and sell what i like and follow my gut, it's treated me well so far in life. I've been grabbing Dominaria Remastered on Amazon lately as much as i could at the $110 price... that set is pure fire and I even host sealed game nights with it and old timers love it (people who are familiar with MTG but dont necessarily still play or keep up with it), I have some folks who dont ever buy any MTG and just come to certain draft nights (Brother's War was popular). I want to do a commander night even for Fallout next year - that should be fun - It worked really well for LotR and Warhammer.
I started watching your videos a few days ago on the Commander Masters debacle, I just wanna say I really dig the channel and videos. You're like if Bill Burr owned an LGS lol
Happy Birthday, and a many great TCG sets to your store, sir! Want to open a store myself someday, and your videos are an incredible asset to prepare myself for that. You are an inspiration, probably the most down-to-earth guy on youtube explaining the TCG business, so please keep it up! :)
Happy birthday! Also really enjoying seeing behind the scenes of the business more. Also hope that Wilds of Eldraine is a much more positive set for you, it already has an heir of what commander masters should have been.
How much play space does your store have? I'm looking to run connected Sorcery, Grand Archive, Mythrel & other independent TCG connected tournaments in the future. The only way out of this is to support Indy games and better companies. I personally plan on only supporting Indy TCGs and Table Tops.... Of course, at what point is an independent game considered mainstream? By it's player base size or it's ruthless business practices? Love your channel & Happy Birthday! Cheers!
I am usually a two booster pack a week guy. My LGS has so many people just like me. Several of us even bought CMM boosters just to help them get rid of them lol
Sometimes you pay a little more to support your lgs becauae its the place you can sit down and play, your home away from home. Now this situation is a mess. I still bought some from my lgs.
Thanks for all the insight, honestly a lot of your videos are treasure troves of info on opening and operating a store. Just wondering why you don't diversify into more of a general hobby store instead of all in on the cards niche?
I'm very small potatoes new TCG Player Direct store - CMM really screwed me. I'm out a couple of grand because of it. It's painful and I need to figure out how to get that paid-off. I'm breaking even with Wilds - other than two cards from its core, Tales is the only thing is really selling and making-up for the costs. PS - Happy Belated Birthday!
I imagine the person walking in off the street used to be seen as the customer. Now they've shifted that to the lgs. You're the last one holding the bag and trying desperately to move inventory so you can buy into the next release. Meanwhile wotc, pokemon, etc and their distributers take the lions share with almost zero risk. That really sucks.
price is of course a thing people look for buying for ourselves, or for business, but other things count to, quality content, quantity available, convenience (nearest game shop, or better knowledge, choice available, instead of a mall), trusted seller. Otherwise, collector booster wouldn't exist and still sell, if the biggest parameter that matter is the price I'm sure people would like more deep content on business on a board or other visual content. write on a paperboard instead of a whiteboard, and it's not copy, lol it's not the tool you use that matters, but more what you talk about, even if there is already professionnal talking about card games business, there is room for everyone :) I already like to listen to your videos and point of view on this business :)
At release, Amazon Dump at 50 bucks below distro makes the product unsellable at the Store level. The only way this changes, is to abandon Distro until they price at or below Amazon. Distro still has the ability considering how much they spend to buy product, to affect change, but only IF they are forced to confront the reality, that the dumps are a direct competitor and threat to their businesses and need to use their buying power to force the source companies to adjust their practices to keep them competitive. That only happens if stores stop ordering from distro and force them to force the source companies to stop undercutting them.
Until wortc makes all distributors sell at same price to all game stores this will continue. The fact that some larger lgs or folks who could take larger amounts get cheaper per box. Maybe even bring back wotc direct to lgs
Happy Birthday! I do nothing with MTG whatsoever but do vendors rip open Set Booster oder Collector Booster or a Combination? The different variaties for this TCG seems so different to others TCG.
@@michelhubsch8160 Absolutely! Stores are soft required to order a certain quantity of MTG product, for a set like Commander Masters that isnt selling well, stores need to recoup their costs by selling singles. The issues arise when selling the singles doesn't raise enough funds.
what if before you place in orders for new sets you get kinda a input from buyers and players at the shop on how many are gonna play/buy the new sets coming out? just throwing random idea out, if you're local enough and see a lot of faces im sure they'll tell if they gonna buy the new set or not.
He did state for a fact that stores preordering from distributors have to be made in advanced, months before spoiler season. If he waits until spoiler season and prepricing to come to market, he may not get the opportunity to buy from distributors anymore.
With this economy/inflation and lack of trust in weight packs or resealed boxes as avg player. 1) look for cheapest prices and 2) its hard to purchase bc i dont trust small bussiess bc people get desperate. So i just go to target, walmart or best buy to buy packs or products. Same issue with graphic cards scalpers and if want legit box your gonna pay way over premium and at avg budget person not worth it. Happy Birthday hope things work out maybe try that liqudation on side again. Owning game store sounds like gacha game or gambling , never know how a set is gonna do or if your local community will be good.
It's funny how he like I cant give you market price as he talks about car salesmen who say they can never give you sticker price sorry you can't rip people off and they smart enough to go somewhere offering 30 percent under "sticker market price" 😂😂

Depends on the plan of action that specific store takes/how much capital they have, some stores only open collector boxes others open set boxes.
So also the price set by WotC is meaningfull for the path they going on opening set or collector booster.
