Find out in this video!
    Journey details:
    Date of travel - January 2023
    Operator - Eurostar
    Origin - Amsterdam Centraal
    Destination - London St Pancras International

    Great stuff. I did the reverse journey back in 1997 - Eurostar to Brussels, then Belgian Railways the rest of the way, including a 15 minute turnaround in Antwerp where the train reversed direction, meaning thwdriver had to change ends - he was in no hurry, strolling along the platform. The whole trip took nearly 7 hours, but it was great fun.

    Coaches 1-8 are off limit on this route before Brussels I think due to the fact they have to block off entry to the platforms at Amsterdam and Rotterdam which are otherwise regular platforms, and for this they block off the back of the platform but keep the front open. It may be to do with staff but it's certainly a regular and planned thing, as you can't get seats in those carriages if booking from the Netherlands.

    • @jlust6660
      @jlust6660 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      The reason only half of the platform is blocked off is also because Eurostar was originally expected to offer tickets between the Shengen area stations on these trains. For immigration reasons those two passenger streams were not allowed to mix, so half of the Dutch platforms has no way of fencing them off for passengers who did not pass security, and the two halfs of the trains are kept separate. In Brussels the Shengen part of the train then had to have a full security sweep before the train could continue to London. Eurostar stopped selling those tickets way sooner than planned, probably to eliminate the security sweep at Brussels, but due to the Dutch platforms has just kept that half of the train completely inaccessible to everyone.

      4 hours to travel 550km! Why I hate high speed rail, the average speed is so low. Just do 125mph S train accelerating EMU's, which can also make many more stops along the way. And those trains actually feel fast, high speed trains just look fast.

    2:03 As a Dutchman and train enthousiast, the iconic "Koploper" units are my favourite trains in The Netherlands. Both design and comfort are amazing! Sadly they will be phased out over the next years, when the new ICNG-sets (Alstom Coradia Stream) are being entered into service.

      For passenges, with the turntable seats in Japan, the seat pitch is less than you'd usually get for a table seat if you want to sit as a group. For the train operators, the pitch is bigger than you'd usually get on airline style seating, so they can fit fewer people in if the seats are turnable.

    The longer the ride the better you can take the plane. The plane not even 1 hour I guess (except the way from London airports to Central London).

    It's a great train but the prices you generally get when trying to book are almost always higher than a comparable flight (Rotterdam to London City). When booking on short notice, nothing is available or the price is twice of what BA charges for the flight. It seems to be a popular option (and it should be), but too expensive.

      @@JackJackProductions You shouldn't compare to sleeper services, though. They're two completely different types of journey. Given it's just over 4 hours on LNER or Lumo direct from King's Cross to Edinburgh, you don't need a sleeper and the journey isn't much more expensive. Factor in the cost of getting to/from airports in London and Edinburgh and it's cheaper.
      If you choose to go on a sleeper (in the UK especially) you're not doing it for transport, you're doing it for the experience.

Additionally, bad weather tends to affect flights more. I have had take offs shifted to Brussels and Biggen Hill at the last moment due to heavy fog before. Turbulence is also an experience as the planes from LCY are tiny and offer little resistance to being buffeted around by strong winds. It's not for everyone.
