      And he's even happier than normal, since it wasn't just an interesting fix, it was a highly educative fix, once again showcasing Vince's microsurgeon skills!
      I also didn't realise that you could measure a speaker's Ohm-values, but it makes sense as the wire's length _and_ thickness determines the Ohms per meter, and the speaker's coil is designed like one of a transformer's windings.

      What would've been funny is if it *was* the mute, and he spent 50 minutes trying to repair the mute button :P

    I think that was one of my favourite fixes to watch too . I’m glad you didn’t just put another speaker in . It looked really fiddly . I was thinking it might of helped to tape the speaker down with kapton tape to stop it moving around when you were soldering the wires and some kapton under the wires when soldering so not to melt the speaker diaphragm. That was pretty delicate work so kudos to you Vince 👍

    Woooow, what a lovely fix is this! You really are very good at fixing this kind of tiny wire things! We used to have the old version of Simon at school in the 80s and when I saw the new version when I was visiting a friend, I bought myself the micro edition (as bein blind, it is easier for me to play as it still has physical buttons like the old one used to have). But you know what Vince? Speaking of me being blind, it really does me good seeing you spending who knows how long to fix a game's speaker... You know, it is ok for me to see you fixing screens and stuff, it is interesting too, but as I only have my hearing, a speaker is much more important for me than a screen. So, if I see you fixing a speaker and doing quite alot of effort to get it working (+ it seems that it is one of your favorite fixes), that is very nice in my opinion. So, thanks for this one, I really loved the technical side of it, but also the fact that it was a speaker that took up like the whole length of the video!

    im good too with electronics and devices and computers technology etc. plus im a professional musician keyboard and drums player , and mechanic engineer with degree and motorcycle technician ... i learned stuff because I like to explore and learning and disassemble and reassemble things from the age of 7 and later i just studied in school and college those and got the papers ..

    Hey Vince! Been watching your channel for about half a year now. While I am particular about the content I watch, I absolutely love your fix it videos! Not only do I love that, I love your approach to it with very minimal editing and fast forwarding. It gives us sort of the impression that we are sitting right next to you dealing with the fixes, rather than having a short video that more or less shows the fast forwarding results. I also love that you try repairing the parts instead of replacing them unless absolutely necessary (like the speaker in this video).
    Also, while no one really likes mistakes, it’s amazing to see them in those type of videos. It gives us a real life warning so that we don’t run into these mistakes again. It’s also beautiful to see how creative you can get around those issues. An easy example of that would be your latest game gear screen replacement, with the whole back screw issue lol.
    I have a suggestion for you that I feel you maybe interested in: You mentioned this video being one of your favorite fixes. I loved your reasoning behind it. So, how about making a video of your top 10 or top 5 fix it videos? Just you, talking for a few minutes about their ranking, why would you give it such a ranking, and what was so interested about those particular ones? It should at the very least garner more videos for these old videos.
    Final thought, Kudos for staying relatable. Had these videos been very technical talk, I am sure it would’ve taken away from the brilliance of it all.

    I recently replaced a speaker from my headphones that looked very similar to that one but I did not dared to try and fix it! I found a replacement online with similar diameter and same impedance but they do sound different... the original is a little bit louder and also the sound quality does not match... So if you ever replace headphone speaker my advice would be to replace both of them. Great video Vince!

    Loving the vid so far, got to go out but before i go, this surgery reminds me of the repairs I've done to the tweeters in my old Goodmans magnum speakers, and repairing crystal cartridges for record players. Super fiddly and super satisfying if it works! Tip for soldering to that varnished wire, I've found if i just pass a lighter flame over the part i need to solder, itll burn the varnish off and let the solder wet it. Not too long or the wire melts and goes brittle just enough for the varnish to burn!

    • @danmackintosh6325

      Finally seen the end of the video, great fix & can fully understand it being one of your favourite fixes. Out of interest, what temperature were you running your soldering iron at? I've found running about 350-360c it struggles with the enamel coated wire hence my use of a flame to remove the coating. Just wondering why your iron seems to melt it away easier lol

    Nicely done on that speaker fix Vince! It has been many years, but there were several speakers / dynamic microphones I was able to repair like that; I was hoping you would find the break in the lead wires on it, pressing down on it and it starting to work was a sure sign the wires broke. Sometimes you can unwind a couple turns and resolder, other times you have to add some extra wire as you did here. Also to try and help avoid melting the diaphragm, you may be able to slide a small piece of aluminum foil under the voice coil wires, in between the wires and diaphragm while you're soldering. Some of these cones / diaphragms melt very easily so you have to be careful soldering. One of the last items I repaired like this was a vintage Shure PE50SP microphone element roughly 10 years ago, these small speakers are much like "dynamic" microphone elements. The microphone still works great these years later.

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks mate :-) The foil is such a simple but great tip. I still don't really understand impedance etc. but I will definitely be able to test speakers in the future and also hopefully try to fix the faulty ones :-)

  • @GadgetUK164
    @GadgetUK164 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Great video! The reason the speaker isn't working - probably that super fine wire around the centre has broken. That's why pressure makes it work. It won't be designed to have pressure on the centre piece there. All that's happening is you pressing down on it is causing it to stay joined, but it won't sound exactly the same as the diaphragm can't move as much. EDIT: Ah, I see you worked it out =D And I also see you remembered your coil wire =D

  • @KorAllRBare
    @KorAllRBare 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    **Addendum**
    Speaker terminals and how they are connected is important, this is because if they're connected one way the speakers cone will initially move outward to produce sound, but if the wires are reversed the initial excursion will be in the initial opposite direction, and thus could be a problem, especially if the speaker was designed to initially move outward, because the initial excursion could slam the coil against the iron core which could distort the coils former thus jamming it against the iron core..
    With most speakers these days being with much greater excursions it's not of much of problem, but when surround sound systems are connected up it's critical and that's because of phase timing..

    • @imark7777777
      @imark7777777 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was thinking more or less the same thing. There is one other thing to be known and that is Phase it can be in Phase or out of phase, not a problem for this but if you have 1 Mono Source into two speakers and one in one out they will cancel each other for a stereo Source in might sound weird.

    The lower the speaker's resistance, the more current will flow trough it for any given voltage across it (ohm's law).
    More current for the same voltage means more power. (Power = voltage * current).
    However, the amplifier needs to be able to handle the increased current level or it'll break.

    A Vernier scale is a set of several lines next to a ruler, and can be used to divide the smallest increment on the ruler to get a more precise measurement. The number of lines and their spacing determines the precision, and commonly 11 Vernier lines for 10 ruler lines is used, since that gets you down to 1/10 of the ruler's spacing. Since the difference between the number of lines is always 1, the two numbers are relatively prime, meaning that only one pair of lines can match up at a time, excluding when 0 and 10 line up, since 10 is just 0 for the next line on the ruler. Because of this only 10 of the Vernier lines are needed, where if the 0th or 10th line matches up with a line on the ruler, the measurement is 0/10 more than the ruler's value, if the first line matches a ruler line, plus 1/10, the second, plus 2/10, etc. There are extra precise Vernier calipers with 51-50 divisions, but if you are going that small, micrometers might be an easier option, as they too can have Vernier scales that read down to 1/100000 mm.

  • @scottgibson7534

    The ohm reading of a speaker is the resistance to AC(a frequency not mains) it is called Impedance. Impedance in speakers is very close to the DC resistance. The wattage is the power. Power is the electrical pressure exerted against the device, which in turn gets converted into another form of energy. In the case of a speaker, sound and a very small amount of heat.

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks PDS, so it looks like the wattage is the important figure for the loudness of the speaker. BUT I wonder why they have different impedance, is it just to match the circuit feeding the speaker or does it effect the quality of the sounds produced by the speaker (the high and lows)?????

    • @pds8475
      @pds8475 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Mymatevince Yes exactly right. The amplifier part of the circuit is designed to allow a certain amount of current through. Having a speaker with to low an Impedance draws to much current, this over drives the amplifier. Which can with prolonged use damage the amplifier circuit.

    the lower the impedance [ohms] of the speaker, the more load it puts onthe amplifier - - using a lower ohm speaker will damage the game over time.

    Ohms, an analogy:
    Ohms is a measure of electrical resistance. More ohms means higher resistance. Imagine if a wire is a one way road, and the resistance (ohms) is the amount of lanes, zero ohms is unlimited amount of lanes, the cars represent the electrons, voltage is the speed the cars are driving and current is the amount of cars in the road. If you have a thin long wire you will have only a few lanes, which will limit the amount of cars (current) going through it, which means higher resistance, and if you try to jam the cars in, they crash (the wire heats up and burn). If you have thicker wire you have lots of lanes so you can drive more cars through. The longer the wire higher the resistance as well, that is why a coil have some resistance because it's a long thin wire.
    This analogy is not perfect, but no analogy really is.

    incomprehensible repair of coil wires. It wouldn't have been possible without a microscope. The hands were firm and did not shake.

    You can find those types of speakers in pretty much any chinese-made toy that makes a sound. I used to dismantle toys when i was young and they almost all had this type of speaker, looks like a generic, cheap type
