Peter is starting to feel like an old friend after all these years when you start to hear their stories over and over. Heard the Ahmad Jamal in the van story before.

Another bit of the lore (or backstory perhaps) is the fact that Argo records was the jazz spinoff of Chess Records, an Jamal's importance in Argo's catalog is kind of like Coltrane's importance in Impulse's catalog. Argo had some other successes (Etta James' "At Last" is one notable Argo release), but if you scan their catalog today, Jamal's records stand out in quantity and quality. Sonny Stitt, Kenny Burrell, Quincy Jones, Lou Donaldson, Ramsey Lewis, and Barry Harris all recorded for Argo, but none of them did their best work there like Jamal.

Guy's, I have a humble request that I feel may be of merit to other listeners - could you do an episode or two about the astounding ESQUIVEL! He was a brutally wonderful pianist and evidently an extraordinary producer. I think there's plenty there to talk about and his music is widely underappreciated in my view.

Pershing is probably a reference to WWI General Pershing (as in the Pershing Tank) who is known phonetically as General Perzhing.

And Peter’s frequent mention of his Attorney’s at DeBosier & DeBosier, which I feel he must need to contact quite often as I bet they are contacted by the Jazz Police more than they’ll ever tell us, it would take up all the time of almost every episode. Keep ‘em on speed-dial, Peter.

Honestly, I really dislike the idea of rating albums, since it is so reductive, and it would be a problem if that were the focus, but I really enjoy and appreciate the process of thinking about an album and what makes it great in a structured, formal way. I know it's all about the journey for you guys, and not the numbers, and this series is really just a game, so I'm totally on board with this and loving every minute of it.
P.S. - I've been hoping you would cover this album because I really want to go deeper on it and absorb more of what is going on, so this was great. You get a 9/10 for reviewing this album, and an 8/10 for the banter.

The golden years you guys talk about here were in the wake of a huge Calypso craze in the US. The adoption of this approach by the top jazz musicians of the time resulted in some amazing all-time ear worms, including “Poinciana”. I feel like this was taken a step further by the house band at Motown, especially Jamerson, who I think must have listened to Israel Crosby quite a bit.

I want aunt Linda back as well! We need an Aunt Linda-meter! Split the ten points between Snobs and Aunt Linda.
Would Snobs like it? Snob-o-meter, ratings 1-5.

Yes, having Aunt Linda back would help offset the snobs. Then any album that appeals to both earns top marks.

Hearing your back and forth about Pershing Avenue I had a hunch and just had to look it up. It's a character flaw.
Pershing Avenue was originally named "Berlin" but as that fell out of favour in WWII, sometime during or after the war it was renamed in honour of General Jack Pershing. Based on that, Adam's pronunciation is probably correct.
I say "probably" because Toronto has a long street named Spadina Avenue that originally was built as the drive up to a mansion called Spadina House. Today the "i" in the street name is pronounced like the one in "mine", whereas for the property it's pronounced as in "ski". Spad-eye-na Spadeena, Pershing Perzhing. 😅

I know what Adam's doing. Sometimes I used to pronounce "pizza" just as it's written, and pretend like I didn't notice (and other common but weirdly spelled vs pronounced nouns, and obviously you only do this with people who don't know you, like when you have to dine with random people, or at an event). Mainly, it's just to mess with peoples' reality. Is that an ET in disguise, or a spy? I think I look too normal, to pull that off any more. It helps if you really get into character. I think that sort of thing started because someone I knew was into chaos magic and discordianism, and they were always talking about interfering with habitual perspectives. I had to ask - he starting referring to himself only in the 3rd person, like Gollum, and I just had to ask. And that led down THAT rabbit hole. It was fun, for sure. I used to forward my spam folder to Hormel. That was after they stopped accepting faxes. Yes, we used to spam the fax machines at Spam HQ. Good times.
