I think I was born in the wrong era because, I could go back in the woods and live, and fish for my food, I use to fly fishing with my father in law, and I loved it. When you walk down that lane, I am on your shoulder, enjoying every thing you to sir. May god bless, you for everything you do. And, god bless to your family.

First I'm 70 y old.I lived thru the 50s,I drove old cars, had a paper route,a Draft Card,Bought&sold cars,Dad bought&sold cars, not many late 40s to current havent driven. ANYTIME someone post a video of the 50s someone always tells how we hung blacks&done this or that😡,YES there were bigots and racist,BUT a lot of that talk was not true!. We WORKED and never had time for all they said we done!!. I lived in Indiana, like I said bought cars, off black people,We never had racial issues here that I saw,I went to school w blacks in the city and suburbs after we moved. Most blacks stayed in their own areas. There were stores here called Atlas that sold items they liked it was a biracial store whites went there too.@ least around here we never had many issues,NOW WE DO!,They hate us now!, We have shootings about every night,Racial progress!??...
      Its horrible!.

Similar to your story. My dad was born in 1919 and had me when he was 48. I grew up listening to all of the great stories and I love the music. Most of the old people at my church are shocked that I know the music their parents knew.

Mr. Day, I just saw this wonderful video. I lost my dad 35 years ago to cancer. He was 68. I am now 65. My dad always made sure that I knew our family history and roots from the time I was old enough to understand it all, to his passing. I have done the same with my children. My mom had a heart condition and was unable to have children. Mom and dad adopted me when I was 3 months old and they never hid that fact from me. They wanted me to know. As far as I’m concerned, they were my mom and dad and I loved them both very dearly. I know from the bottom of my heart that I am a very blessed person. You remind me so much of my dad. He had a hard life and quit school at the age of 12 years old to go to work because of the death of his dad in the coal mines. My dad hired out in the old CC camps to support his mom and his 3 younger siblings. May God go with you and continue his blessings upon you!

People that lived in these KY. and TN. mountainsides are raised to be tough. My mother told me lots of stories. She was born 1935 in KY. She said that they had beds made from the corn shucks on the floors. She told me that she could remember looking through the cracks in the floor and seeing their chickens under the house. She talk about all the cold winters growing up on that mountain in Eastern KY. I was raised on a farm we worked so hard for everything. My mother passed away in 2013. She worked so hard to give her 7 children a good life. Then today you have these people using words like white privilege. They all need a wake-up call. It is called hard work!!! I miss you mom.

I'm from the East Coast but my father's from Canada. I don't know why, but he loved Bluegrass music. I'd press my ear up against the speaker to listen like a fool. My grandfather was a machinist for Sun Oil and worked on the battleships that would need repair from the war. He grew apples when he retired, and my brother and I would help in the fall. It was hard work (to me), but worth so much. He was friends with the last chief of the Lenni-Lenape Indians in MD. He was shown where their grave site was, I think among Indians that's sacred ground. Pop-pop was known by everyone around. People would drive from up in PA to buy apples from him. He had brought timber from an old barn in Pennsylvania to build his barn, He had two J Deere tractors, a '50 and '55. He was the hardest worker I knew, and hunted, fished (he was on Field&Stream once for fly-fishing), apple farmed, and was a good example of a man. I honestly think people now-adays have lost their minds. Joe Biden lived near me about 3 miles away. He used to come in a popular restaurant I worked at. Everyone would make a big deal about him "Biden's here!". I was extremely suspicious of him because he seemed like he just loved the attention, but not the people. My girlfriend's family were friends with the Bidens. Her younger brother told me that he "knew that guy was a pedophile when I met him". Biden had lived in the artist community in Arden, Del. It was a strange place, my Dad worked at IBM, and we'd go to the dinner theater there for christmas party. We drove into that place and I got a wierd vibe, I was wondering what in the world we were doing there. A man who lived there, Jay Parker, said that it was an Illuminati center. They used to have rituals in the basement of the dinner theater there. It was a very bad place, the local police were called, and they killed the two officers and called the headquarters and told them "If you want anymore of this, send more policemen". Biden is connected with extremely evil people. This is how it is now-adays, people have lost their minds.

My mother is from Harlan County, born in Ages Creek in 1933. Her name is Forstene Smith-Humphrey. Her mother and father watched the fire tower in Putney. Their names was Ed and Sarah Smith. They would climb the tower every day to watch for forest fires. They were there for 26 years. They lived in a log cabin by the tower built by CCC. They're gone now but my mother is still living, she's 86 now. She has so many stories like Charlie's that need to be told. This was great to watch.

Jon Bonez, I was going to comment to Serviccarrider that it was happening to me now. I have 2 boys, 3 grandchildren, and siblings....but I’m alone, no friends, no one calls, comes by, or invites me. I have a husband, but he’s an alcoholic, when he gets off work sits in his truck on a daily and drinks till he’s falling down drunk or abusive....so I have no husband really. I keep telling myself, I have God and my dog to talk to & protect me.

We all would say we need to tape them talking but we never did. I did take some photos of Granddaddy telling some stories sitting in the living room with friends gathered around . I live in the old home place now, I sit and from time to time think of me and Granddaddy watching Lawrence Welk and eating oyster stew. Frying up some of the oysters cause he liked eating them in cold biscuit . Sure miss those days.

I was mesmerized listening to this mans stories. He thought of his growing up life nostalgically, to me it would have been hard, especially for the women. But this man was contented and happy right where he stayed. Such a lovely person.

My grandfather told me that when he was a young boy growing up in Montgomery county in Tennessee that while playing in the yard he saw a man walking toward him and he yelled for his mother it turned out it was his dad coming home from the civil war,he also told us how the government bought their land and other peoples to put FT.CAMPBELL on the land and they had to take what the government gave them,He died when I was 15 and I was forced out of school by the CEDAR HILL men's club and made to work on their farms for 12.00 a week because my mother had no job and they gave me a choice of putting my younger brother and sister in foster homes or me leave school and work for them which I did, The only thing that kept me going was remembering the stories and hard times my grandfather told me, We could learn a lot from the previous generation who went through hard-times but we are to damn busy doing nothing,

All I can do is ponder what it would have been like to live such a great life many people would read this and think it wasn't such a good life but in reality it's the best life you could possibly live just listen to him talk about all the things nature had to give among all the hard work he gave everything sounds wonderful to me that he lived

Unfortunately I don't have family in my personal life who like to share their stories so im so thankful there are people like you. ❤

Great worrk Jon. i will check out more of this series. You have done a great service not only to the man in the film but also to the generations to follow him. Nice camera and editing work. The real beauty is in the story this man tells of a simpler place and time. Has to be one of the best vids I've seen on here.

Charlie may not have been known by many of us, but we are all Charlie.
This is something that everyone should do, to leave memories for future generations.
Charlie's wife, Alma, was a distant relative of both of my parents.
    Thank you for sharing.

Thank you so very much for bringing us the special video from Charlie Day’s life!!! So happy for him that he had this made as he wanted to! And we learned about him and his life in Tennessee more… I’m from not too far away in the suburbs of Philadelphia Pennsylvania. I appreciate seeing all of the back woods country and all the old hardwood trees that I miss so much, living here in Utah now. I had an uncle Charlie, my dad‘s brother!
