Ena always spoke the truth, they were just taking her (Martha), as it was someone to look after their daughter Sandra, a baby sitter basically for the young tot, while they go off to enjoy themselves, sight seeing etc, as Ena said to them, Martha knew that herself deep down, Lily had gone up in the world, basically a snob, ashamed of her 'working class' gossipy mother, yet Martha would never have said anything against them, even though they couldn't care two hoots about her, it was always "our Lily and Our Lily's Wilf". Ena loved Martha more than they ever did. I know it has been said so many times, but to not renew Lynne Carol's contact was a big mistake. I saw a photo on the internet of Lynne Carol out of her Martha costume, a very elegant, beautiful actress, with lovely dark styled hair, row of pearls and lovely stylish dress on. Very clever actress to turn herself into a pensioner, when she was no where near 68 in her real age and i read once the horn rimmed spectacles (from Lynne's own theatrical box) had no lenses in them, i also read the spectacles in the episode seen after Martha's passing were a look a like pair, as Lynne Carol asked her husband to retrieve them from the table on the snug set, saying something along the lines of "don't let them (props boys) have them, and her husband got to the set just in time, as a prop boy was just about to walk off with them, saying to her husband they were needed for the scene in the next episode, but Lynne's husband told them, "you'll just have to get another pair". Can anyone confirm i have that story straight? I'm sure i read it in a book called 'The real Coronation Street'.
@@londonnodippydolly6635 I don’t know if you have read the Maggie Sullivan about Coronation Street during World War Two but in most of them, she was quite snobbish. I have read “The Real Coronation Street” and I am quite sure the spectacles story is correct. Another thing I read which I found quite interesting was that Violet Carson (Ena Sharples) considered leaving the show after the writes wrote Lynn Carol (Martha Longhurst) out. Luckily, she decided not to and she was still a brilliant character even after Martha’s death.
So Hilda replaced Martha in the Rovers and Minnie and Ena became two. Great photo of Ena and Minnie at the end very arty. And the caption would read … thanks for sharing 🌟
I hope this is of interest, I'm sure it will be, my best friend of 37 years, actually sat in Martha's chair in the snug, in the early 70's, my best friend played Mrs.Parsons, but is better known for her role as Dot Cotton. June said Violet (Carson) was one of the loviest, nicest people to work with and Violet enjoyed working with June very much and visa versa!
@@londonnodippydolly6635 Wow, that is amazing! Dot is one of my favourite EastEnders characters. I do recall seeing June in a 1970s episode of Coronation Street. A lot of actors say Violet was a lovely person and she was nothing like her tough, battle axe character. I would have loved to work with her.
i noticed at the very end of the video Minnie sat in Ena's seat and Ena sat down in Martha's chair, almost to say 'it doesnt matter where we sit now, nothing is going to be the same again', that's what that end bit said to me.
@@londonnodippydolly6635 I just noticed that. The details that the show put it in to Martha’s death makes it even more sad. I will miss her as I continue to do these videos.
@@DylanReynolds-t4r I appreciate your video's very much, I hope you will get to the Martha Longhurst haunting the snug of the Rovers Return, and although Betty Turpin never met her, she heard her and saw her out of the corner of her eye.
@@londonnodippydolly6635 I remember someone mentioning that to me once. I know it was June 1975 but I’m not sure what exact episode it was. If the episode is available, I will certainly upload it. I also know that Martha’s ghost appeared again in 2011 when Roy was hearing strange noises in his cafe. It was Dennis that said it sounded like Martha.
Did Ena say "i remember you when your bum showed through yer bloomers Lily Longhurst", i noticed Ena on purpose called her by her maiden name "Longhurst" to remind her of who she was before she got married to Wilf and became stuck up, pretending she was better than anyone else.
@@briandelaney9710 it is a great scene, i knew that Ena had scolded Lily for the way she treated her mother, but this is the first time i have actually seen the scene itself. Did I hear right, did Ena say "I remember you when yer bum was poking out her bloomers Lily Longhurst", she deliberately called her by her maiden name to remind her of who she really was under all the snobbery, reminding her she was really working class, with a working class mother Martha Longhurst and working class father Percy Longhurst.
Classic ena 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅

Worst thing they ever did getting rid of Lynne. Like Macbeth without the 3 witches!

Ena tells the truth to Martha’s snobbish daughter and son in law and gives a loving advice to Jerry.
