  • The Tomato Paste Wash creates a very clean and great tasting spirit. Dump that Turbo Yeast from Still Spirits and Alcotec and make it yourself.

    Never seen such concern over measurements for a simple bird watcher's

      I know, I know. I am the same when I make bread, I like to be very precise over the ingredients. There is no need to be that concerned, it is just want I do!

    I do these all the time with great success, but I invert my sugar first, I make 3 times the batch size, stripe them and then do a spirit run with 200cm spool and a sight glass under the column, I usually knock out 94 %ABV all day every day. Cheers mate. 👍.

      Hi Gary. When you invert your sugar, do you use Cane or Granulatd? I have not tried inverting sugar before, but it is something that I do want to try.

      @@brewingadvice I use granulated sugar, 6kg of sugar, 4Lts of water and 2 teaspoons of citric acid and boil it til it hits 114c, you can scale it up or down, the invert sugar is easier for the yeast to motabolize and doesn't stress them as much, I use bakers yeast and aim for about 1.070 SG. 👍

      Thank you for the information @@garrymcgaw4745. I read that you should only do it with cane sugar! Since cane is twice the price, I didn't want to try it. If though you use granulated and it works, then I will certainly give it a go. Thanks for letting me know how you do it as well.

      Thank you, that means a lot to me. Sadly with two young children, a full-time job and private evening and weekend work, I don't get a great deal of time to myself to be able to make videos. I do though have a list of ones I want to make, so will get through them as and when I can. I do really appreciate your words of encouragement.

    Well presented video, TPW is so popular due to its simplicity, don't need to be so accurate about the quantities as long as you hit the OG and Ph, It helps if you oxygenate the water so the yeast can multiply but watch for the Ph crash on day 3.

      I do agree with you. I get a little anal over measurements as I like to find patterns and to be able to predict the outcome. The TWP and Kale wash are great as you can be quite relaxed with the ingredients.

    This is something I was going to ask you about a long time ago, when you mentioned it in the Alcotec video. By the way, the alcotec stuff was dreadful in my experience, I just couldn't make it work. Whereas Still Spirits, I felt like the work I was doing was fine tuning something that was guaranteed to work.
    Looks good, since its probably not worth a video, what are the results after distilling VS still spirits? Ive been meaning to try more things. I've only just got my still spirits turbo yeast washes just the way I like them, though I am void of anything that might be considered a precise measurement or practice.

    • @brewingadvice
      @brewingadvice  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Chris. Like you I really liked the Still Spirits Turbo Yeast, yes, it just worked for me every time too.
      As to the results and comparing them, you get a little over half the yield from the Birdwatchers, but it is more than half the cost, so it balances out. As to the quality, the Still Spirits Turbo Yeast as you know does produce a very nice drink when you mix it with something. The Birdwatchers though is a lot crisper and feels less chemically. I have only done around 15 Birdwatchers so far, but to be honest I will never do another Turbo Yeast unless I am doing it for a video here.
      Don't worry too much about being precise with measurements if you want to give it a go, it can very very resilient.
      My last comment is sorry. I say sorry as I am currently recording another video of a different wash, a 'Kale' wash. This takes a little bit more work than a Birdwatchers, but takes no big measurement of ingredients, and apart from the sugar, yeast and water, it only has 1 other ingredient! The quality of the spirit also seems to be even better than the Birdwatchers. I will be posting the video once the wash is complete.

    I agree with the no waste philosophy re excess lemons, but like the pasta dish comment made for your excess, go look up a lemon ponzu recipe, again made up from mostly cupboard staples, great for students on rice dishes or gym rats, or those looking to reduce their GI via fridge rested rice (where the starch reduces from fridge storage) ...ponzu is terrific, though it might make you want to make a sake to add instead of buy, but that said citric acid is a mainstay for many cleaning purposes, descalers & the like for washing machines, coffee machines, dishwashers etc as well as a staple for brewing, so there are options if you plan.

      Thanks for the comment. I like the sound of ponzu, might have to give that a try!

      Which is what I love about this hobby. We don't all have to do it the same way, as long as you are happy with what you brew, then carry on and don't let anybody tell you differently .

      I couldn't agree more. I have a few more days for my Kale wash to be finished, then will be uploading a video about it here. This is also a great alternative to a Turbo sugar wash.

    Just curious, but I assume that after the stripping runs & final spirit run using the TPW, that there is no need to also put this through a carbon filter as with the Turbo system?
    Have the same boiler & T500 condenser as yourself & will be trying this next, after many Turbo Pure & Classic washes.

      Hi Goeff. It is all down to personal preference. I do polish all neutral spirits that I make. It doesn't matter if it is a Turbo Yest, a TPW or Kale Wash. What I would recommend is to make your TPW and distill it twice. Then make a drink you like from it. Next filter what you have left and then make the same drink again. Leave both drinks for 2 months to settle/mature, then try them. Your nose and taste buds will tell you how much difference you can sense, and also if you are bothered about any potential difference.

      That I do Mark, but back to brewing, I also learnt not to keep my small scales and spare cash rolled up in the same place. Next you'll be telling me I can't ask my kids to take some of the citric acid bags to friends when they run out of lemon juice for their pancakes! What is the world coming to!

    This used to be my wash of choice, although I'm now leaning more towards Teddysads Fast fermenting vodka. With the TPW when diluting to 40% I was getting a lot of louching, I was wondering if it was oils from the tomato puree, something any pasta sauce shows, its not an issue at 45% or above. So I'm trying something else to see how it goes. Its currently fermenting at the moment.

      I hadn't heard of the Teddysads Fast Fermenting Vodka until now, but researched it and think I need to give it a go. Right now a Kale wash is my preferred wash (video on that to come real soon).

    i did this with 1 pk S04 Safale Dry Ale Beer Yeast 11.5g and took 4 weeks still didnt ferment out but less sulfur smell then turbo pack
    i tasted the wash after 4 weeks and strange i liked it as a fermented juice flavor - ran it through the still after tasting

      Very good. I think that is the beauty of a TPW or a Kale Wash, that you can alter them and make them your own.

      Hi @user-jb2wu6pn1k,
      I use bentonite for finings, then I have my own custom built steel filter system (which uses activated carbon) for polishing.

    Any reason you don’t pitch the yeast before adding to the wash?

    • @brewingadvice
      @brewingadvice  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Simon, depends on what you mean by pitch. To pour the yeast into the wort is pitching. Or do you mean why don't I create a Starter?
