  • In the 19th century, the village of Petrykivka near the Ukrainian city of Dnipro became the center of a decorative art form revolution, where peasant houses were painted with floral and plant motifs. And even to this day, it's a tradition that lives on.

At the museum of folk architecture and painting of Ukraine this spirit of modernity is closely intervolving with ancient times. Dozens of people from around the world come here to immerse themselves into traditional Ukrainian crafts. And we're here to learn the basics of the Petrykivka Painting. Artist Viktoria agreed to be our guide in the world of authentic crafts. She started painting Petrykivka at the age of 9 and since then this creative work remains her obsession. Victoria says that the name of the technique derives from the village near the Dnipro city, which in the 19th century became the cradle of this art form.
    - First of all Petrykivka appeared as a wall painting. As the village was poor people wanted to decorated their houses. The first brush they used were made of cat hair also our fingers are one of the main instruments used both now and previously. In Petrykivka this ornamentation decorated the white washed walls of peasant houses. Basically it was painted on traditional stones, the main wall of the house and the frames of windows and doors.
According to Victoria it has some sacral meaning.
    - Previously the perimeter of peasant houses was painted with red clay. They were painting a line. It's like a protection belt. A rooster is a gibber of the House of fire. That is why as our granny say the Roosters were painted on the stock. I decided to try my hand at creating a Petrykivka picture. The first step is choosing a color. Our ancestors had neither gouache or oil colors. Therefore they used some natural materials such as juice from carrots beetroots blue cabbages and so on.
    - Легенько торкнулися кінчиком, прижали і потихеньку піднімаємо.
    - Який саме пензлик?
    - Ось такий, змочіть його. Взяли трішки жовтого, майже воду.
Today not the only one interested in painting by verm. Diana and her husband also came to the workshop to dive into the art of their ancestors. They both have roots in western Ukraine.
    - I think it's important to preserve the culture because I think when a lot of the traditional practices get lost. When we continue these things we learn a little bit about like the plants and a little bit about the art and a lot about the culture. I think it's important to remember where we where we come from.
In 2012 Petrykivka painting was recognized as part of the intangible cultural heritage of Ukraine and one year after the included in the UNESCO representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Eventually this technique became a brand of Ukrainian culture.
