I'm a user experience designer for digital interfaces, but I must say that user experience is not primarily for digital. We have user experience all around us, from the packages of food we open to the door handle we turn. I think it's important to mention that when giving the definition of user experience design. That said...I think you both did an excellent presentation and broke down your process very well and I highly appreciated watching this episode, keep up the good work!
+Jose Caballer Ha! Yes you can use that process for most things in life ;) I work for at Thinkspace, it's a Digital Agency in North Glendale, we are a pretty small shop but we've been at it for 4 years now!
Remember the days of the CDs? You bought the thing , you brought it home and then you did not know how to open it because of the horrible packaging! A real bad UX . So, I agree with +Melissa Lopez, it is all about what the U-ser actually X-periences
Can't believe I have not see this before... i've been in business for 15 years and everything these guys are talking about is SPOT ON... not because I heard of it... but I have been living that everyday!! you guys rock!!
I have been reading and watching a lot of videos surrounding the theory of UX but the problem is nobody explains ways to take theory, marketing, and research and how to turn your data into design. These guys are true Gs and know exactly what they are doing and explain all of that so these videos are very big help. Thanks guys
I love the production and feel of this video environment, I feel like I'm actually at a real meeting and involved, in a real class. More classes should be like this, with live whiteboard, questions, students answering. Awesome! I really think this way of filming is the future of classes online. Brilliant. Awesome UX!
I’m a UX design student and I appreciate the feeling of being in the field and how things will transpire. Thank you for the video and all the information! It’s very helpful.
Holy molly, and this is free on TH-cam? These are good times to be alive. I remember 2003 I could not find anyone to assist with UI design and the visual aspects of computer science. Now, Holy smoke, these two gents have changed my life. I took me too long to land on your page but I am very glad I did. I would not have majored in Accounting had you guys landed on this page a few years ago. I am now saving to take one of your courses on your website. Thank you, thank you!
I used to follow skool videos months back...and somewhere drifted apart.. this one is so much more refreshing than the previous versions.I always wondered why ull got less views inspite of good content...I guess all u needed was better packaging..like in this video...good work.. keep it up José and Chris
Thanks for such good content. Key take aways are: 1. Defining user personas: Who is the user? what are their challenges and How can you solve them? How to translate objections into value proposition and backing it with data and testimonials. And finally explain the product and how it works. Empathy is one of the key ways to connect with the users!
Really the best ever UX design videos! Thanks Jose for sharing you brilliant experience through live examples! I finally know what UX design is exactly! In other videos it's just getting half picture- but your video is like a complete 360 course on UX design- so appreciated!
It's a good day when TH-cam shows me only The Skool Network videos under 'Watch it again'. :) I love watching videos that have both Jose and Chris. It's amazing to watch them create magic and methodically build a masterpiece! Please do more together!
i'm a graphic designer and i like to challange myself with different projects i searched a lot and u guys made a perfect tutorial that is so helpful, thank you very much
Love this new studio production format! Much much easier to follow the content in the video, without me having to scrub through to get to the good parts. The extra thought put into the vision mixing also helps! Awesome
This will always be one of my favorite videos about UX Process with clients! I always have to watch some portion of this before going into client presentations! On behalf of this world's designers. Thank you, Skool Network team!
Great video! Thanks Chris and Jose; very spontaneous, simple... I graduated as a designer in 2002 and went to a different path on my carrier; i am now thinking of going back to my roots and getting into UX design. This video definitely helped.
This is good start. Coincidentally I've recently had a similar session like this in my office with one client's project. Without knowing about your process, my one kinda matched, which is great. Now I got sort of a validation that this process works! Cheers.
I loved the evolution of this process, really great to put structure into practice. I'm also glad you mentioned copywriting. I have a journalistic/programme background and taught storytelling for UGC at the BBC. I have taken this storytelling into my UX work as pages and site experiences need to tell the write story. If a page flows it will tell a story that ends in action by user so the copy has to complement the design process.
This made me have an interest in UX design! I'm both a programmer but I love to do art especially photography and graphic design and I never knew there was a whole field of this! Thank you guys for inspiring me!
i swear to god this channel and everything the future puts up is absolute GOLD! you guys always drop some serious gems of knowledge and break that shit down like it silly Puddy. i can straight uni off this for free, i don't know about the rest of this chat but this stuff is tremendous value
@9:24 I liked the video just for the likability of the presenters. Very useful information. It's daunting but reaching out to active members of the community who provide free educational content is reassuring. Thanks guys!!
I watched this video last year and it was so confusing for me. I went and learned the fundamentals of UX design recently and coming back, it all makes sense now! Im actually learning!
wow! that was some real thing going out there...It was so helpful to actually see a professional UX designer doing what he does best I felt like i was in the room I HATED THE MARKER SOUND!!!
This is ridiculously goood.. as a newbie i find this very helpful. I've been searching the net for some UX methodologies but you guys presented it as something i really understand. Fundamentals are so good. Others quickly jump to the process but not really identifying the problem. Some of them mixes up UI and UX. Anyway, as always! great videos from you guys!
I hope this question can land with one of you guys, I know it's an old video now. Q. How much do you run through this process with the client? Would you just gather the data from the exercise in the meeting and then go away to create structure and copy, or do they like to see it form in front of them a little? If this is better explained in an already made video that would be fine ;) Thanks guys. Really got a lot from this one and loved the scene you built.
Great episode. Really love the breakdown of the target market/client into individual customer profiles. This episode gave me a bunch of ideas for how we should redesign our homepage. Focusing it more on the client's needs rather than our services. Thanks!
***** Currently our homepage consists a lot of our service offerings and explanations in detail about what they are and what they include. I think I am going to move those sections to a new "services" page and really focus the homepage on our target client and how we can help them. Focus on their challenges and how we can help them overcome them. Similar to how you were discussing the case study section in the critique you left before. Just focusing more on the target client rather than our services specifically. Everything that you talked about in this episode. Really break down the client and think a lot about it before diving into the content and layout of the site/homepage. Also, I have been a bit busy this week with client work, but I am beginning to finally take your advice and make changes to our portfolio on the site www.cyberbytesinc.com/portfolio as you can see, focusing the summary more on the client and their challenge. (It's also a very very rough draft, writing is not that great, I know. Going to revamp it and get our freelance content writer to go in and further develop and refine it.) Also, beginning to work on a solid case study page www.cyberbytesinc.com/portfolio/northtowns-remodeling-corp - Like you mentioned, there should be a clear role defined there. Explaining what we did for the client. Still have a TON of work to do, ignore any content on the case study page currently, I have to really dive deep into the content of the page, develop the challenges, outcomes, testimonials, etc. The critique made me want to revamp our portfolio page, and this episode makes me want to revamp our homepage. Given enough time, this channel is going to make me revamp our entire site haha
Jose - Thank u for speakin ENGLISH. This is the first UX video I have come across that does not describe UX as Edgar Allen Poe would, that too only to techies with the emphasis on being wordy !!
Hey, so I'm a graphic designer and I've been working at an Advertising Agency for about 5 years now, I've gained some skills that I've never thought I would, I also learned many thought processes that were not taught to me by college or university. Recently, I've been asked to dive deep into UX Design. I've noticed that UX Design is similar to when you're brainstorming for an Advertising Campaign. - You begin by identifying your Client's issue or core message. - Move on to identifying their target audience. - Build an Axis of communication ( Offers/Services vs Needs/Requirements ) - Hero Message - Translate that hero message into a visual with the right copy, etc. What does UX Design differ from what we do at an Advertising Agency? And how to begin thinking from a User Experience point of view, if what we do at an advertising agency is similar? PS: Isn't UX Design simply Common Sense for Design. Everything around us is potentially a product on its own, right? Thanks a lot in advance.
This was an amazing topic. I learned some very valuable stuff! As I'm refining my website, I'm totally putting this into practice. I happen to fall into a 3rd category for you guys. I'm a mom (and wife) who wants to grow her business (it's brand new) but I want to stay home. I don't want an office outside the home. I'm thinking through who I'm going to subcontract work out to. i.e. web developer, illustrator, copywriter, seo expert, etc. Who knows though...seasons change and one day I may want to grow it into a brick and mortar agency. Thanks for a great video!
Thanks! Somewhere throughout the middle of the video, trying to understand the things you describe by comparing with something I already know, I already knew I will watch the second video later on. Useful to hear from people who had experience in a specific environment. Also good metaphors at the end - it's ok and almost always good to keep the structure of the format adding on something creative and relevant to the context of the product.
Love your hat! Almost bought one in Puerto Rico last year till they dropped the hammer and told me my favorite one cost $5,000. I get some woman in Panama spent the better part of a year making it, but I'm not there yet.
User Experience is not just mainly a collection of screens. You cannot design an experience, you can only design products, services, websites, apps e.t.c. to improve and enhance the experience for the target users through collection of qualitative and quantitative data (journey mapping/surveys/personas/behavorial observation/diary studies e.t.c). It should be coined as product design, because the end result of the design may fall in the spectrum of designing intangible (digital interface, websites, apps, service) and tangible (electronic products, machines) elements, and not associating ux design = digital stuff/IT Unfortunately, many people who design websites/apps equate themselves as UX designers or even UX team leads, by throwing wireframe/screen solutions only, which is wrong. UX is more than that, and everyone who is involved in any of these projects (not necessarily designers) are contributing to the user experience. I may be biased on this but I feel that only people who has gone through product design/industrial design/HCI/psychology courses are the only ones who can understand what it truly means to design for a better experience.
I've been actually doing some drawing for a design and listening to your presentation, and quite honestly, it got to my head much easier than when I look also... good stuff, good spirit and atmosphere, I wish my college was like that. Thumbs up!
Very helpful. Thank you. It is always good to talk about limits, such as how many bullets to come up with or how few you can get away with. You did this with personas, saying 8 is about the maximum. You also showed that for a quick project, it is okay to just use two or so. Also, the answers you put on the board come from many years of experience. A total beginner might not know where the line is for deciding whether an idea is good or bad. They also might not know how to prioritize them.
I completely understand what Chris is saying by designers thinking they can create the web 4.0. I feel the pull to try and do that every time I put pen to paper or Stylus to iPad. It is not easy to reign yourself in and keep it clean and simple.
awesome videos, one thing I can suggest is to please write one the board a bit clearer and bigger so it's easy to read. Thank you guys and keep up the amazing work!
Dear Jose & Chris, thank you for this clear and fabulous explanation about the UX Design. Which book should you advise me to read about UX to understand more background information, user profiles and about how the users think?

Wow! I found your video almost 3-years after it was published. Great stuff. I'm 52 and have dabbled in the web since the 90s -- nothing big, but have kept my thumb on the pulse of its development and evolution. My career path has been totally outside of design but I am very interested in it. Any advice on how a career changer can get started? Thanks!

Yes very true why people think UX just for the limited web! it is not, it is the very wide field
Could you name a variety of companies/ industries that need UX? Do you have an recommendations for someone pursuing UX.
You are absolutely right.
Can't believe I have not see this before... i've been in business for 15 years and everything these guys are talking about is SPOT ON... not because I heard of it... but I have been living that everyday!! you guys rock!!
+Caio Almeida Thanks for validating what we think is true. Good to know.

Chris Do, You mentioned a copywriting book you were reading. What books would you recommend for copywriting?
Please continue no this topic...
the best thing that happened to me is discovering your channel
wow. welcome.

Squeaking pen is hurting me:( I need to turn the volume down when you're writing, apart from that the video is absolutely great..
Yeah. Me too. Like finger nail on chalk board.

appreciate how straightforward you kept the information. very useful.
love the hat - and the bald head!
It's what we got to work with.

This is all valuable continuing education especially for those of us that didn't get this covered in design school.
Hey, so I'm a graphic designer and I've been working at an Advertising Agency for about 5 years now, I've gained some skills that I've never thought I would, I also learned many thought processes that were not taught to me by college or university.

I've been actually doing some drawing for a design and listening to your presentation, and quite honestly, it got to my head much easier than when I look also... good stuff, good spirit and atmosphere, I wish my college was like that. Thumbs up!
+Tomica Tomasevic Thanks Tomica. Sounds like we were able to help you find some clarity.
This video has legs. Just passed 10k views and on the way to bring highest viewed episode.
Powerful stuff! Thank you to 'The Futur' team for this wealth of information!
Live redesigns are my other favorite with the design feedback videos since it covers the whole process , can't wait for the next episode :)
The results are here. Want to see the redesign of the skool site? It's here: www.theskoolrocks.com/core3. Let us know what you think.
+The Skool Network wow that is a perfect example of how should a product website be, knowledge in action :)
This is fantastic info! This way of thinking scales beyond the virtual user experience. The car analogy is right on.
+Thomas Hutchings Thanks for commenting Thomas. Glad you like the car analogy.
I completely understand what Chris is saying by designers thinking they can create the web 4.0. I feel the pull to try and do that every time I put pen to paper or Stylus to iPad. It is not easy to reign yourself in and keep it clean and simple.
This is a fantastic introduction to the UX design process. Thanks for your hard work putting this content together!
You're very welcome!
One of the best utility content I've come across. Great synergy too!
Gotta admit - very professional work, guys. Both the video and the topic development. Best of luck to you!
This is surprisingly entertaining AND educational. Thanks, guys!
Your comment was surprisingly kind and succinct.
Your user experience to us watching needs working on!
You are geniuses! Got me just with the intro. Totally feeling it!
+Niurka Aguilar Thanks. We won't let that get to our heads. : )
Beautifully explained. Can't thank you enough!

Thanks guys! Great episode.
thanks for watching.
Great content as usual. Thank you for illustrating a user-centric design process.
Loved it. That marker squeak though....
Sorry.
Personas, great help for determining your market! Started using this recently. Great show!
this was great! User profiles/personas really clicked for me now - so thank you :)
if you want to go deeper, look into the CORE kit.
Cant believe I have only seen your videos! Amazing great advice for a fellow designer.
Shaun Hampsey come see us live sometime.

It's so fun. Thanks a lot, The Futur!

Such a great and straightforward episode! Thank you!
Dear Jose & Chris, thank you for this clear and fabulous explanation about the UX Design. Which book should you advise me to read about UX to understand more background information, user profiles and about how the users think?
Nice tutorial!

Guys you are awesome! Literally you made it very simple to everyone :)
Really good stuff guys. I needed this bad!! Im trying to transition from a Web Designer to a UX Designer. Hat looks pretty good Jose, you just missing the Dominican Cigar y un Mabi.
Thanks!
I learned something and wasn't bored for a single minute.
= profit
