I got to ride in one of these in 1967 when I was stationed at MCAS Yuma ..... I was serving with VMT103 as a Safety & Survival (6443) mechanic - and since I was qualified with seats/oxygen/etc. I used to Ride-along quite a bit with our pilots in the TA4F ........... one day this OV-1 shows up on the ramp with an Army Sgt. working on it ...... I went over to take a look at the airplane and talk to the plane captain ..... He said they were flying night ops at YPG (Yuma Proving Grounds) testing radar gear ...... I asked if I could possibly catch a ride........Long story short ..... the Pilot said O.K . my C.O. said O.K. and we left about 10 pm ......... flew over to YPG, parked the aircraft (the pilot had briefed me to stay in the A/C), and a bunch of guys in lab coats(with ARMED GUARDS) came out and installed some equipment ....... we took - off flew around for about 3 hours(flipping switches and changing course/altitude & occasionally they'd call and ask where we were! ........ we just drove around & listened to cowboy music stations all night ( before you get excited - the YPG restricted airspace is HUGE and we had plenty of room to get lost and not affect commercial A/C). ....... landed back at YPG - the scientists removed the gear (under guard) and we flew back to YUMA and did a max performance landing (stopped in 150' into a 40mph crosswind - said thank you - went to bed and was back at work by noon ................ a really comfortable airplane ............. ;-p
great story. At one point in time the canadian army looked at the Mohawk as a replacement for the L-19. for artillery spotting and light armed recon for our troops in Germany. Sadly like it always has been in canada the government cheeped out and the idea was dropped.

Flew right seat 73-86 Hood, Stuttgart, Huachuca, and Humphreys. I’ve got the flat butt and sore back to prove it too. Heck of a career in the Hawk miss the T.O.s and all the dedicated maintenance folks who kept the green and gray ladies flying. She never hurt me but certainly scared the hell out of me by blowing #1 during takeoff roll in China Lake in 76. HAWK65

I loved flying the Hawk, it was a blast... Best assignment of my 22 years in the Army.... Flew 946 in Weisbaden, Germany and so many others, the Ditch Witch was my favorite - she got that name and noise art because they never could get the the props to reverse together in high RPM- had to land and rollout for 150 feet or so before commanding reverse are she would bite your ass- hard break on the runway is not recommended .. The OV-1 is one of those flying oddities that, just by looking at it would make a normal NON-Aircraft historian/enthusiast person just call *ugly* and _junk_ because they don't understand it's purpose or it's tech underneath it's metal skin or due to just now knowing- How it flew. I was stationed at Ft. Huachuca 74-76 and I was a 35k Avionics Mechanic. Electronic Proving Ground Aviation Branch. We were short TO's so I got to cross train and fly the right seat as a TO quite often. Pretty cool stuff for a young soldier right out of AIT when i first got there. Quite a bit of TDY missions as well.

The only fixed wing aircraft in the Army inventory, collecting intelligence 24hrs a day during the "Cold War". The MIGHTY MOHAWK, people don't understand the importance of this incredible aircraft was maintained by some AWESOME PEOPLE. Miss the "Crew Nights" at SNOOPY'S & UFO'S.
I was at Echterdingen AF from '87 to '89. First as a 67H then a 66H. In the 7/159th. The AVIM unit. I ran the seat shop for a while before I became a T.I. Spent many nights at Snoopy's. Actually, the army had two Beech fixed wings also. The RU-21 and the RC-12.
Grumman made some damn strong coming home aircraft.....all the ‘cats for the Navy and the Lunar Lander for Apollo......the company was a major reason the U.S. won the Cold War.
When I was in flight school at Hunter, they brought in a group of Mohawks from Ft. Rucker because of a storm. They made a production of landing, approaching in formation and rolling out one at a time to come around and land on that 11,000' runway. It was a bit strange to see those birds tied down next to the choppers. I was an OH-6 pilot but finished my tour at Vung Tau with an AC maintenance company. We had the odd Mohawk in for work by the prop and rotor shop or for battle damage. Some of them had the SLAR package hanging off the side. Again they looked odd among the UH-1s and AH-1s, out of place but looking competent and aggressive. Sadly (from my view point) I could not arrange to ride along on a test flight.
Did my AIT at Rucker (1986) .. saw this ugly thing do a roll after take off whil standing in line for chow .. didn't know it at the time, but ended up in Huachuca attached to the training unit for the Mohawk
Great video. Fantastic aircraft with a very interesting history. Reminds me of a WWII fighter and always got a lot of interest when I flew into an air force or navy base. Rare to see an obviously tactical aircraft with props.
was stationed at Camp Humphreys, Korea '86-87.....had modified Mohawks flying out of there all the time. had to get used to the noise in the barracks day and night. was funny when the temp/humidity were just right... they'd wind those props up to the max, go screaming down the runway, and have to come to a screeching stop as they could not get enough lift. they'd then go back and try it again.... sometimes several times before they could get in the air
I don't know why so many folks call this plane ugly. I think it's beautiful. I've often wondered about all the civilian applications that this airplane would be good for. Now that it has been retired from the military, it seems there were would be dozens of uses for it.
Ok, she looks slow and clumsy BUT with 2400 horses on tap she has a top speed of 305 mph and a climb rate (max load) of 3500 fpm. This plane could hang with any early WW2 fighter, like a Hawker Hurricane for instance.
I was at the firing range a few years ago when I saw something that looked familiar, I walked over to get a closer look and it was an OV-10 fuselage, all shot up and wrecked. I thought about how many ops this bird had been through and ended up like this, at least let it die with some dignity.
The other two were the 0v-10 Bronco, and in the 60's, the A-1 Skyraider. Briefly, the Cessna 0A-37 was in the mix, and the Cessna Skymaster was also converted to military use as an FAC/tac-recon/SAR. But, the Frippin' AF has kept a stupidly tight lid on airframes used to support the Army. It borders on negligent sedition as to how the AF has kept this part of the arming of our Forces to themselves, while Fighting any use of better aircraft (note that, the A-10, a great plane in a needed role, was first made in the early 70's; That makes my point, in and of itself). The AF Generals making this internal policy need to be hoisted up by their own petards until they 'squeak' a bit. It's not a good thing that we make competent planes, but cannot use them effectively because the 'generals' who plan wars are just SO STUPID!

Well, the Navy had 'close air support' so much better figured out than the USAAF did in WW2. By Korea, it was obvious that the newer USAF was just dumb. They sent in P-80's first, then F/P51-h's for ground attack, while holding back the F/P-47N's which had great range, 8 faster-firing .50 cal guns, and used the huge air-cooled radial engine (vs. the quite vulnerable Allison/Merlin motor and liquid cooling the Mustangs used). That was an obvious 'Oops' that Truman didn't call out, while that same motor was what the Marines had on their Corsairs, but with only 4 20mm cannons, or 6 x.50 cal guns of a slower rate of fire [same as the P-51]. The USAF showed their idiocy right there, only being able to cover their butts by deploying the F-86 Sabre in Mig Alley...
Yes. It's the only way out in an emergency. The canopy is plexiglass and is broken by the helmet . Martin-Baker ejection seat. I flew infa-red missions in it at the 225th Avn Co in Nam, 69-70. Still love the OV-1. They are all gone.

Flown exclusively by the US Army and used for aerial surveillance (electrical, as in radar surveillance) and very little visual recon. Flew mostly at night in Viet Nam with side looking airborne radar and other kinds i'm not familiar with.
There were 2 types of Hawks... Ov-1D and Rv-1d.... OV's were equipped with the SLAR(Side looking Airborne Radar) and would take IR images of the ground looking for armor vehicles. In Desert Shield/Storm we worked hand in hand with the F-16 and A-10's and would give them coordinates of where Armor vehicles would be and their movements. RV's were more for ELINT or Signal gathering.
No. OV-1 was intended as a tactical recon and observation aircraft. OV-10 was designed by retired Marine WH Beckett and retired Marine pilot Col K.P. Rice who flew close air support in Korea literally one night in a garage. They decided to sit down and come up with the "perfect" close air support aircraft that could support troops and rearm and refuel at the edge of the battlefield without need for runways or much preparation. Their original proposal was literally half the wingspan, and half the weight of the OV-10

It is the most beautiful aircraft I ever worked on and I enjoy flying in there but you cannot take out the injection seat just to make it a sport aircraft is airplane is both engine will go out it will dip on you. It came fly on one engine, but it will not fly glide.
Aerial surveillance and observaiton with capabilities for rocket pods and .50 caliber pods on hard points under the wings. But the Air force fought the armed versions. Photographic, IR, and SLAR side looking airborne radar missions were its main use. They were in Army inventory from 1959-1997. Drones due most of their work now. Sad but safer without personnel on board.
@@Nighthawke70 There was a quite well armed model the JOV-1 that was used in Vietnam. A J model has the US Army's only Vietnam War, Air to Air combat kill, against a Mig 17. The J model was able to carry everything in the US Military aircraft armament inventory in 1960, short of nuclear weapons. The Engineers (to to be smart asses I am sure) flight tested it with an old kitchen sink and then took a picture with all of it's possible armament and the sink , just so that they could say (and also the caption of the picture) "Everything including the kitchen sink".
Pat-We had them in the 10st in the early 70's at Campbell. Our TOs chose to use that name instead of the Airborne Surveillance Specialist nametag some REMF came up with as their specialty. Most of our TOs were ticked off after they removed the secondary flight controls so they could floor mount more sensor crap there. Our pilots were Nam vets and always tried to teach the TOs, even our new kids, how to land the bird should the pilot get hit, but with the other controls gone, that practice stopped obviously.
Bring me up to speed..." REMF ?" I get the MF part...what's the "RE?" Which reminds me of a saying I came up with when I was in the Army. " Better to be the " ER " than to be the " IE !" All the way! Airborne!
We used to call this the widow maker just because the props were so close to the cockpit would have not liked bailing out of this aircraft.They flew all the time out of west Ft. Hood mostly boarder patrol. They looked pretty cool but I stuck with helicopters..
You don't bail out. The Martin Baker ejection seat shoots your butt straight up. I flew it in 69-70 at the 225th in Phu Hiep, RVN. Only the VC could make a widow maker.

Just looks WRONG! Like it’s stolen the engines, cockpit, and a couple of rudders from a bigger aircraft; those drop tanks don’t look like they belong to it either, ant that horrible narrow undercarriage!?

What was the aircraft in BAT-22? I always thought that was an OV-10. The one I'm talking about had two props, a pusher and a puller.
Cessna O-2 Skymaster
In the real event the aircraft was an OV-10A, but in the movie 'Bat 21' they used an O-2 Skymaster or its civilian model Cessna.

What were these planes used for ?
Flown exclusively by the US Army and used for aerial surveillance (electrical, as in radar surveillance) and very little visual recon. Flew mostly at night in Viet Nam with side looking airborne radar and other kinds i'm not familiar with.

There were 2 types of Hawks... Ov-1D and Rv-1d.... OV's were equipped with the SLAR(Side looking Airborne Radar) and would take IR images of the ground looking for armor vehicles. In Desert Shield/Storm we worked hand in hand with the F-16 and A-10's and would give them coordinates of where Armor vehicles would be and their movements. RV's were more for ELINT or Signal gathering.

No. OV-1 was intended as a tactical recon and observation aircraft. OV-10 was designed by retired Marine WH Beckett and retired Marine pilot Col K.P. Rice who flew close air support in Korea literally one night in a garage. They decided to sit down and come up with the "perfect" close air support aircraft that could support troops and rearm and refuel at the edge of the battlefield without need for runways or much preparation. Their original proposal was literally half the wingspan, and half the weight of the OV-10

7 hard points for armor/personnel?
Hard points for electronic surveillance stuff and sometimes rocket pods and machine guns for offensive work.
It is the most beautiful aircraft I ever worked on and I enjoy flying in there but you cannot take out the injection seat just to make it a sport aircraft is airplane is both engine will go out it will dip on you. It came fly on one engine, but it will not fly glide.
What was its mission?
Aerial surveillance and observaiton with capabilities for rocket pods and .50 caliber pods on hard points under the wings. But the Air force fought the armed versions. Photographic, IR, and SLAR side looking airborne radar missions were its main use. They were in Army inventory from 1959-1997. Drones due most of their work now. Sad but safer without personnel on board.

A mini A10, I'd buy this.
Not so. It is not as well armed or armoured as the Hog. But flying in tandem as a spotter/hound dog, can be a nasty team to any threat.
@@Nighthawke70 There was a quite well armed model the JOV-1 that was used in Vietnam. A J model has the US Army's only Vietnam War, Air to Air combat kill, against a Mig 17. The J model was able to carry everything in the US Military aircraft armament inventory in 1960, short of nuclear weapons. The Engineers (to to be smart asses I am sure) flight tested it with an old kitchen sink and then took a picture with all of it's possible armament and the sink , just so that they could say (and also the caption of the picture) "Everything including the kitchen sink".

Pat-We had them in the 10st in the early 70's at Campbell. Our TOs chose to use that name instead of the Airborne Surveillance Specialist nametag some REMF came up with as their specialty. Most of our TOs were ticked off after they removed the secondary flight controls so they could floor mount more sensor crap there. Our pilots were Nam vets and always tried to teach the TOs, even our new kids, how to land the bird should the pilot get hit, but with the other controls gone, that practice stopped obviously.
Bring me up to speed..." REMF ?" I get the MF part...what's the "RE?" Which reminds me of a saying I came up with when I was in the Army. " Better to be the " ER " than to be the " IE !" All the way! Airborne!

We used to call this the widow maker just because the props were so close to the cockpit would have not liked bailing out of this aircraft.They flew all the time out of west Ft. Hood mostly boarder patrol. They looked pretty cool but I stuck with helicopters..
You don't bail out. The Martin Baker ejection seat shoots your butt straight up. I flew it in 69-70 at the 225th in Phu Hiep, RVN. Only the VC could make a widow maker.
