In Homeworld: Cataclysm, the resource collectors also doubled as salvaging ships. It worked fine there.

@@perafilozof Cataclysm is the best imo. A shame you never played it. The original was very good as well of course. Homeworld 2 didn't do it for me. Both the story and the gameplay were not my thing with that one. I know there is also the land-based prequel, but that one I skipped.

Thank you for sharing your own experience with the franchise. I too much preferred the way gameplay was executed in HW1, story I can live with in the second one, but yeah first was better. That is why it's so great these Devs are going back to the roots so much.

@@perafilozof You may still want to make an effort to play it. I know it won't be straightforward, considering how old it is. But it is still quite an experience. @Al_Mars 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

There was also a pretty fun gimmick in cata regarding resource collectors and salvaging. They could salvage so-called "space crystals" - a particular very volatile type of an asteroid. Then you haul it back to your command ship and dismantle it for some ungodly amount of resources. The catch was, if that crystal took enough enemy fire, it basically blew up like a nuke killing everything in a huge radius. (even command ships, if close enough). It was always a good laugh when it happened in a multiplayer match - could easily turn the tables.

One cool unforgettable feature in HW Cataclysm is the "let's volt in! (Voltes 5 style)" by the acolytes to turn into more powerful units (ACVs) by combining together (albeit irreversibly). And of course, the "pilot view", "time compression", and "unit promotion". I'd been waiting for HWC Remastered if it ever happens...

Hi, and thank you for sharing your thoughts on Cata! It is a shame beyond crying how it is only available on GoG and hasn't been remastered. The story of how it's original files were lost is another black mark on gaming history.

As a side note: cataclysm was my inspiration for many ships in space engineers, and avorion.
It is truly a lost child of the hw franchise, and even the developers wish they could have done more work with it, but a bunch of stuff (code and other such stuff) was lost in the transition away from Sierra, BBI and gearbox mentioned it back when they bought the title from Sierra, but it was only briefly talked about. (I believe because it is a sore subject for the devs)

It's most likely that the new mothership is an attempt to reverse engineering the Sajuuk-Khar hyperspace system (from the looks of it's Hull Number , it's most likely this one is the 15th mothership ever constructed), the weirdest and biggest part of the trailer is that majority of the ships is coincidentally resemble a mix of Taiidan design, from the pancake mode, the fighters, even frigates, maybe the Taiidan Republic form a union with Hiigaran?

Homeworld 1 was better and in that game, projectiles had actual physic, travel time, and direction to determine hit or miss, in Homeworld 2 it was only stimulation show and % chance to hit based on ship class.
Stances and formations were vastly better in homeworld 1 and fuel was also a thing especially as we consider how the projectile's hit system worked. Salvage was OP.
Homeworld 1 had locational damage for many big ships as well. In homeworld 1 you could ram enemy ships even by accidents and take and deal dmg.
No such thing in HW 2 it was much more simplified and arcade-like fighter squadrons, with no fuel.
HW 2 capital sub-system targeting was much better and as result bombers were much more useful. I preferred the resource collecting and healing methods of HW 2 as well.
Capturing vessels were almost fully useless.....
I Think cataclysm was the best, in that game workers also played multi-role of healer, capturer, and resource collector all in one. Micro ships were also a cool idea. So does the beast and the infection mechanic. Some crystal resources could explode and cause huge explosions, but no such thing in HW 1 or 2.
The 8x timer option was good when there was no actual combat only buildings up or waiting for research.

Hello Crypto Gamer I love to read comments from long time fans who remember so much detail about these games! Welcome to my channel! I agree with almost everything, as I have similar thoughts on the two main games, the Cataclysm is the one I just started to play.
I would just say that you could get some use out of capture mechanic in the second game but it was really hard and annoying. As for the fuel... I honestly think it worked well back in 1999 but today... it wouldn't find good reception among gamers.

About the Mothership in this game (shown in an extended gameplay video ) it can change from flat to standing orientation so i guess it will have gameplay elements tied to it to be justified. As others mentioned in Homeworld cataclysm u had the dual harvester/salvage corvettes . We can all agree the marine frig was a waste of space specially in the campaign where u couldnt capture ships which took u over your limit so u could have to battlecruisers and u were forbidden to capture a 3rd. In the old Homeworld 1 game salvage corvettes weren special ships they counted towards your total corvette limit which was 30 i believe.
Talking about great haulls well i never ever destroyed ships above frigate size , all the enemy cap ships were calptured minus a few where to many were present all at once like in the interdictor station mission before jumping to Hiigara u have like 6 destoryers 1 Heavy cruiser and a missle destroyer , sometimes i didnt manage to capture all destroyers , but the important ones the like the MIssle destroyer and the HeavyCruiser there capture was always prio.
At the start of the last mission u can have like 15+ Destroyers 6-8 MIssle Destroyers and i believe 5 Heavy Cruisers.
In the remastered version because it had to play in multiplayer agains the homeworld 2 settings the salvagers were limited in number so u couldnt take more then 2-3 cap ships and maybe a super capital.

All good points callitri ! Especially about the missions and captured ships. I am sorry I don't have screenshots of my armadas from HW1. I was anal about capturing everything I could.
I would be happy if the developers even tried to give us more of HW1 gameplay than HW2. I honestly think they themselves didn't know what a phenomenon the salvage corvettes were going to become so in HW2 they wanted to change that not understanding their audience.
With a different mix of developers this time around and many fan's eyes on them, I think they will do what they can to fix HW2 problems.

Wait, so if you capture an enemy vessel with your resource collector, does the enemy vessel become part of your fleet or just get broken down for the materials?
Gotta say if it's the later that's a HUGE let down. My favorite thing to do was attempt to wrangle cloaking ship+ savage ships and steel the enemy ships. Literally spent hours doing this. Upon reaching final battle my armada was insane.

      @perafilozof  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hello Collin and thank you for sharing your idea with us. One one hand I think it would be complicated to use on the other it would be different to say the least. My idea would be some sort of probe that attaches to he ship, puts an AI into it's systems, vents all he human crew out and brings the ship in on autopilot to your mothership.

@@perafilozof you know I would have never thought about something like that and it sounds cool. definitely keeps the casualties to a minimum to say the least hell if actual population is involved in terms of people. have an option to split the crew of the ship that's doing the boarding to make use of the vessel right away. but make it sub optional in performance

Well I got Homeworld remastered it'd be great to have it more like open like Stellaris or something maybe have a way to make passive income like in the spin-off command & Conquer generals where you played as the Chinese and used computer hackers to get money something like that you know like a passive income in a way but it's a lot slower. Or if they're adding more of a population feature maybe have something in the research tree

  • @Jimoshi1

formations seems to just cripple your ships even more then in remaster. Specially fighters as they gather into ONE line and manuver for years to kill ONE enemy. Its much more efficient to just click stop when they engage so they stant in one spot and shoot like frigs or corvets. Railgun Corvets TON of range but AI just use them as rams and they die so you need to constantly stop them and use tripple shot manually. Bombers is dogshit. Also not a fun of that rock paper scissors mechanic from Desserts of Kharak. Ships die too fast you can berely even do shit to save them. Where is that rather long and beautiful fights with large ships shooting out while small ones fly around. Support frigs auto repair seems broken af. Also looking at battlecruiser in last mission all of the capital ships will be small as hell.
