I completely get his points- 1/ empathy is easily manipulated by directing focus on one particular aspect of a situation and ignoring all others 2/ we need to distinguish between emotional identification and resonating with others but keeping a degree of equanimity ......it is unfortunate however for him not clarify this and keep using word "compassion" to put both under the same umbrella and then argue against it. Need to find a descriptive term for the "feeling others' feelings" kind of "compassion"....e.g. Emotional overwhelm, emotional drench, "othering"
I really like that, Dr. Bloom, you used yourself as an example...and admitted to an unconscious bias re: the color of a hand...Later, 9/24/15, Dr., you gave a lecture that was not as effective in its case, as this one. Thank you for this authenticity. Happy New Year.
Both empathy and compassion while a very noble attitude indicates a relationship of a superior who is not in need, and therefore requires help. In our use of the term it is akin to pity. What this starving humanity needs is self giving and self abandonment. A willingness to sacrifice ones own personal enjoyment in order to serve the good of the whole. People in trouble are supposed to help each other.
This is quite beautiful. However, "proper' parenting has numerous variables which fluctuate according to a child's genetic predisposition and his/her environment. I work in an acute care setting with adults and adolescents. What programs can one implement so that the young who have suffered (and continue to do so) can internalize that positivity, feel and understand kindness, and move one to reach inherent (or beyond) personal potential)? I return to this talk to try to understand how to implement this concept in my interaction with those who have survived incredible odds. Overcoming those internal and environmental barriers toward success appear rather daunting. We are all wondrously good and bad. How do you teach kindness to those who, at the inception of their lives, experienced pure shit? This is an important question, with many possible responses. I am curious to hear yours. Thank so much.
You won't get one from this *****. The real answer is to be so authentic in your empathy-modeling that nobody could fail to notice your example. Then get true friends to help you in your missions(s) Hard answer I know but to try to listen to UNempathetic people explain away the need for empathy is no solution!!!!!!
Model kindness and get help from others to do it more consistently and better. There is no explaining away our need to domineer and exploit the ones who are most in need of kindness. Hi IQ blathering won't do it either.
If I want to cry, then I don't want people around me to cry. But they skipped easily over the benefits of having the tears of futility. A tearless society is not accepting it short comings as easy. They say understanding and compassion is all what you need in your friends, when you're sad. I agree, but they have to accept and allow the function of emotions to unfold Don't they also forget social emotions. The empathy of a crowd synchronizing their emotion in a rack concert, battle, song, ceremony or some other ritual.
The root of the word compassion is to feel together. But to be compassionate or to empathize indicates a relationship of a superior who is not in need towards an inferior who has needs. People need to be responsible for each other
The root problem is the atomization of people everywhere by more "powerful" people, and I believe this has derived from materialism and especially capitalism. People are robbed of their responsibility as a side effect of having been robbed of their very HUMANITY relative to their own worlds...in the eyes of others, namely materialists and capitalists.
This was a great discussion. I wonder, if Spock participated in the Q&A, what questions would he have asked? What statements would he have made? What examples might he have given?
Empathy can be a real problem only if you are mentally incompetent to distinguish conmen from more authentic people in fact empathy helps you do a distinction
It is just as bad. You are more likely to burn out if you help people you are more emotionally invested in. Now there's two people that needs saving. This is why psychologists are trained in keeping a professional distance.
There is a huge difference between understanding others feelings/emotions and feeling others emotions/feelings. Psychopaths understand but do not feel others pain. This is why they are master manipulators and still evil. Evil acts against others won't hurt a psychopath, because he/she do not feel others emotions/feelings, although he or she understands them very well. I don't think Bloom makes a very convincing case against the existence of empathy. Empathy is necessary for social community and corporation. If you do not understand others, then you don't know how to cooperate with them or manipulate them for that matter.
No, you confuse both definitions. "empathy" after Bloom means feel what other people feel, which makes you only biased because you will feel more for your child than for thousands African chiildren. COMPASSION makes you understand that your child has no more value than African children. This is morality.
It's very popular nowadays to be against everything that makes us human. Empathy is what makes us human, emapthy is our connection to nature and to universe. Without empathy we become mechanical beings easily manipulated and the manipulators. Human society is very cold cruel and unempathic so it makes it hard for a good hearted empathic person to feel and be happy. If you are that peson you need to learn distinguish good from evil and authentic from fake. There is no sweet without the bitter, true hapiness needs work, life is bittersweet and that makes it worth living!
I think your definition of empathy is not mine. It's too narrow. I empathize for all the down trodden. The black, poor, red, yellow and rainbow.I suggest a dose of Johnny Cash, Man In Black.

I found this to be very informative. Despite being a living case and point, I didn't realize how unhelpful and limited empathy actually is until now.

thx sam
I like the fact that there is a jug of water and glasses, instead of plastic bottles of water

I like how they drop his name again when things get controversial.

You are right. He makes no case at all. Too many people think they can explain away the ugliness in this world. We didn't need one more in this dude.
agree

You're contradicting yourself mate.
Empathy without wisdom is a pithole.

If empathy is what makes us human (it isn't) then it's time to evolve beyond it.

Don't worry people. This guy is a **** ******* ****. Pay attention to genuinely good people, he is obviously NOT one of them!!!
